[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] Le 10 avril dernier, As Everything Unfolds sortait son troisième album Did You Ask To Be Set Free? via Century Media. L’album traite de l’état d’esprit de la chanteuse Charlie Rolfe et de celui du reste du groupe après le décès de leur camarade Jamie Gowers survenu en pleine tournée il y’a maintenant deux ans. On pourrait presque considérer ce nouvel opus comme un album « concept » car la chanteuse a crée un personnage fictif auquel s’accrocher dans la vie quotidienne, inspiré par les jeux vidéo, les films et les albums qui la passionnent.
L’album s’ouvre avec DENIAL, là où les couplets sont presque doux, ils finissent par exploser lorsque les screams de Charlie interviennent pour introduire un très bon refrain avant de replonger dans quelque chose de plus calme soutenu par la rythmique du batteur mais le groupe nous réserve quand même un break dévastateur sur lequel la vocaliste explose littéralement et hurle toute sa colère et sa frustration avant le single GASOLINE. L’intro nous annonce déjà un morceau qui s’annonce plus entraînant que le précédent et c’est le cas! Les guitares sont bien plus présentes, la voix de la chanteuse plus dynamique, en soit GASOLINE est un morceau bien meilleur que l’ouverture de l’album avec des paroles toujours poignantes comme « Saying goodbye, is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do ». FIND ANOTHER WAY pourrait se positionner comme la ballade de l’album tout en restant incroyablement puissante et poignante, elle change encore une fois le rythme de l’album mais pas de la mauvaise façon tout du moins pour l’instant…
CUT THE LIES renoue avec l’énergie et est un morceau presque rafraîchissant, on y retrouve l’énergie du groupe avec du scream mais également des passages plus Electro, ça change la donne mais là encore As Everything Unfolds arrive à surprendre et c’est une très bonne chose! Un seul bémol sur la tracklist, beaucoup de morceaux ne marqueront pas les esprits et seront vite oubliés…Mais SET IN FLOW n’en fait pas partie! Soutenu par des claviers qui sortent tout droit des 80’s, on retrouve quand même l’énergie Post-Hardcore de la formation avec des parties qui en feront headbanger plus d’un. On retrouve un featuring sur WHAT YOU WANTED avec Dani Winter-Bates (Bury Tomorrow), ce duo brille avec les voix des deux vocalistes et la belle énergie retrouvée sur SET IN FLOW, le morceau est plus intense et plus enragé. IDOLS continue sur cette belle lancée en annonçant la couleur d’entrée de jeu « Kill Your Idols » en analysant les paroles, on peut avoir l’impression qu’ici on parle des icônes religieuses (« Walk around with your god-given right to shun » ou encore « Count your blessings as they come » et « Free the conscious mind trapped and confined in your bind »).
REVERIE emprunte une voie alternant entre la Pop et l’Electro, un morceau sur lequel on entend des paroles telles que « Il y’a du réconfort dans la solitude » (But there’s comfort in the loneliness) avant la cassure nette avec EDGE OF FOREVER, des notes de guitare accoustique accompagnent la performance vocale poignante de Charlie pour cette jolie ballade avant un refrain un peu plus puissant, ce titre aurait pu être une belle conclusion mais le groupe ne réserve un dernier titre avec SETTING SUN. Mais la magie n’opère pas et au final il aurait peut-être mieux fallu garder EDGE OF FOREVER en clôture tellement le titre était adapté pour celle-ci…
Ce nouvel album de As Everything Unfolds n’est pas ce qu’on pourrait appeler l’album de l’année…Il y’a de bons morceaux mais ils sont noyés dans la masse de ceux plus « faibles » en énergie ce qui est dommage, le morceau final également n’est pas le meilleur pour ce moment-clé mais heureusement l’énergie qu’on peut retrouvée sur certains autres titres et les innovations musicales du groupe permettent à DID YOU ASK TO BE SET FREE d’avoir un regain d’intérêt pour cette oeuvre!

[ENGLISH VERSION] On 10 April, As Everything Unfolds released their third album, *Did You Ask To Be Set Free?*, via Century Media. The album explores the state of mind of singer Charlie Rolfe and the rest of the band following the death of their bandmate Jamie Gowers, which occurred whilst they were on tour two years ago. One could almost consider this new release a ‘concept’ album, as the singer has created a fictional character to cling to in everyday life, inspired by the video games, films and albums she is passionate about.
The album opens with DENIAL, where the verses are almost gentle, only to explode when Charlie’s screams kick in to introduce a brilliant chorus before settling back into something calmer, underpinned by the drummer’s rhythm section; yet the band still has a devastating break in store for us, during which the vocalist literally explodes, screaming out all her anger and frustration, before the single GASOLINE. The intro already hints at a track that promises to be more catchy than the previous one, and it certainly is! The guitars are much more prominent, the singer’s voice more dynamic; in fact, GASOLINE is a far better track than the album’s opener, with lyrics that remain poignant, such as “Saying goodbye, is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do”. FIND ANOTHER WAY could be seen as the album’s ballad, whilst remaining incredibly powerful and poignant; it once again shifts the album’s pace, but not in a bad way—at least not yet…
CUT THE LIES picks up the energy again and is a rather refreshing track; we find the band’s energy here with screams but also more electro-style passages. It changes the game, but once again As Everything Unfolds manages to surprise, and that’s a very good thing! The only downside to the tracklist is that many tracks won’t leave a lasting impression and will be quickly forgotten… But SET IN FLOW isn’t one of them! Backed by keyboards straight out of the 80s, the band’s post-hardcore energy is still very much present, with sections that will have more than a few people headbanging. There’s a guest appearance on WHAT YOU WANTED featuring Dani Winter-Bates (Bury Tomorrow); this duet shines thanks to the voices of both singers and the great energy found on SET IN FLOW – the track is more intense and more furious. IDOLS continues this fine momentum by setting the tone right from the start with “Kill Your Idols”; analysing the lyrics, one gets the impression that the song is about religious icons (“Walk around with your god-given right to shun” or “Count your blessings as they come” and “Free the conscious mind trapped and confined in your bind”).
REVERIE takes a path that alternates between pop and electro, a track featuring lyrics such as ‘There’s comfort in the loneliness’ before the sharp break with ‘EDGE OF FOREVER’, where acoustic guitar notes accompany Charlie’s poignant vocals on this lovely ballad, leading into a slightly more powerful chorus; this track could have been a fine conclusion, but the band saves a final track with ‘SETTING SUN’. But the magic doesn’t quite work, and in the end it might have been better to keep ‘EDGE OF FOREVER’ as the closer, given how well-suited the track was for that role…
This new album from As Everything Unfolds isn’t what you’d call the album of the year… There are some good tracks, but they’re lost amongst the mass of those that are somewhat ‘lacking’ in energy, which is a shame; the final track isn’t the best choice for that key moment either. Fortunately, however, the energy found on certain other tracks and the band’s musical innovations allow DID YOU ASK TO BE SET FREE to regain some interest in this work!
