From First To Last : We Were Bleeding Anyway [FR/EN]

[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] Onze ans après leur dernier album Dead Trees, From First To Last sont enfin de retour au sommet de leur forme avec un nouvel EP We Were Bleeding Anyway disponible depuis le 2 octobre dernier via Fearless Records, un nouveau Leader en la personne de Lil Lotus et une volonté de faire encore plus de bruit !

[ENGLISH VERSION] Eleven years after their last album, *Dead Trees*, From First To Last are finally back at the top of their game with a new EP, *We Were Bleeding Anyway*, available since October 2 via Fearless Records, a new frontman in Lil Lotus, and a determination to make even more noise!

“They Said Your Ghost Was A Promise” kicks off this new EP, and it’s brimming with emo nostalgia—the chills from the new singer’s post-hardcore-influenced vocals and screams (which we already loved so much in his solo project) and the instrumental that makes you want to jump around. And that chorus—it grabs you by the gut and won’t let go. The band has said it’s a special song because it evokes the loss of a loved one; they hope it will resonate with those going through this painful ordeal. In short, it’s a track that makes you want to hit the “Repeat” button to feel less alone. Next up is the first single to be unveiled, “Your Name In Red Ink,” which really made us feel that the band so dear to us millennials was well and truly back (even though, in reality, they never really left the scene). This second track is almost as intense as the first, with a pre-chorus that makes you want to burn it all down thanks to Chris Lent’s (drums) rhythm section, and a chorus that makes you want to sing at the top of your lungs along with Lil Lotus and Matt Good (guitar/vocals), featuring lyrics like “I’d burn in hell to keep you” ,it makes you want to pour your heart out to your loved one and go back to a time when having a greasy streak of hair, red skinny jeans, and a snake-bite was super stylish!

*Everything Ends In Silence* showcases the chemistry among the longtime members as well as the two newcomers who are contributing their own touch; it continues to bring back memories, but we can’t help but notice that the talent is far from gone—even though we thought Sonny Moore’s (now Skrillex) departure would spell the end for the band, it might not be the case after all—even though we totally gave up on FFTL when Sonny jumped ship, and let’s be honest, we’re not the only ones! “Picking Clothes To Die In” is one of the standout tracks on this new EP, with guitar parts that are completely in line with the band’s post-hardcore/emocore style; Matt and Lotus’s vocals blend perfectly without one overshadowing the other—in short, a masterclass!

“Hate Me All You Want, I Still Got Your…” leans more toward pop-punk or classic emo and lacks that heavier edge that sets (and set) From First To Last apart from other bands in the genre; that said, it’s a pretty fun track to listen to—and somewhat surprising, too—but it feels almost a bit below the rest of the EP. And then comes the finale with “Pale Blue”,the kind of acoustic ballad you’d find back in the day on any good FFTL album or similar band’s work. It lets you soak up another dose of raw, sincere emotion while taking a breather… but the calm never lasts very long—the riffs return one last time, accompanied by the frontman’s screams, leaving us thinking, “What? Is it over already?”

We were waiting for them to slip up; we thought they were dead and buried. But With this new EP, From First To Last proves that it’s actually the EXACT opposite! The addition of Lil Lotus on vocals is literally the highlight of this new phase in their career, and we find ourselves hoping for a new album very soon—and maybe even a European tour date in the near future!
