[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] Après EAT IT UP SPIT IT OUT sorti en 2022, Holy Wars a sorti son deuxième album studio Shadow Work / Light Work il y’a quelques jours via Pale Chord Music. Cet album est scindé en deux parties pour représenter la dualité entre Shadow et Light et il commence donc avec Shadow.
Cette première partie s’ouvre donc avec O Death qui commence comme avec des chuchotements lugubres puis le bruit d’un enregistreur qu’on active avant que la voix claire de Kat n’arrive puis le tic-tac d’une horloge noyé par une espèce de « neige » musicale, une introduction un peu bizarre puis la voix de la chanteuse revient vite soutenue par les musiciens pour un final ancré dans le Metalcore, pas de scream mais juste l’énergie du genre à l’instar de ce que peut proposer (par exemple) Mothica. Le morceau suivant I Feel Everything là encore on est sur quelque chose d’énergique sur laquelle la voix de la vocaliste se révèle complètement sur le refrain, les couplets sont chargés de colère amplifiée par l’effet sur la voix. Puis le morceau explose en un seul cri avant de revenir avec cette fausse douceur pour un ultime refrain sur lequel on ressent toutes les émotions communiquées par le groupe. Shadowalker c’est de l’énergie mélangée à des émotions pures, Holy Wars a fait un très bon travail sur son envie de transmettre des émotions en y parlant de thèmes personnels comme le deuil (Kat ayant perdu ses parents il y’a 10 ans mais également sa soeur en pleine compositions de cet album) mais en le faisant de manière universelle. Crucify c’est l’histoire d’une vengeance et d’une relation-suicide (« This love is a suicide.Cross my heart and I hope you die ») avec un break dévastateur comme on les aiment et Skin Deep pourrait en être la suite logique au niveau des paroles. Cette première partie se termine par I.F.O.Y.G qui ralentit un peu le rythme un peu imposé mais reste dans une veine aussi lugubre et graphique que certains des autres morceaux (« I’ll bury you face down And I’ll fuck on your grave »)
Puis Light arrive et on a effectivement l’impression de quelque chose de plus « léger » dès Proof Of Existence comme une percée de la lumière à travers les ténèbres, la voix de Kat nous guide à travers ce voyage. Et cette énergie renouvelée rajoute un peu de scream vers la fin du morceau même si c’est peu et qu’on aurait presque aimer en avoir plus, ce court passage donne une nouvelle profondeur. L’introduction ultra rapide de Kill The Light nous annonce encore quelque chose de presque nouveau, le chant se fait plus « urgent » sur les couplets quand au refrain on a parfois l’impression d’avoir quelque chose de très Pop-Punk (tout du moins de très Alternative) qui change la dynamique mais heureusement pas dans le mauvais sens. Everything You reste dans cette vibe très catchy tandis que Holy Unholy revient à quelque chose de plus sombre avec une énergie qui lorgne plus du côté du Metalcore. Cette deuxième partie se termine avec Metamorphosis , ce dernier titre ne referme pas le chapitre complètement mais permet de savoir que quelque chose d’autre peut se construire derrière et que l’histoire n’est pas terminée.
Ce nouvel album de Holy Wars est profond, puissant et travaille énormément sur les émotions. On se laisse porter par la voix de la chanteuse qui nous emmène dans son voyage cathartique dans lequel on peut tous se retrouver et on en ressort presque…grandis?

[ENGLISH VERSION] Following the release of *EAT IT UP SPIT IT OUT* in 2022, Holy Wars released their second studio album, *Shadow Work / Light Work*, a few days ago via Pale Chord Music. The album is divided into two parts to represent the duality between Shadow and Light, and thus begins with *Shadow*.
This first part opens with “O Death,” which begins with eerie whispers followed by the sound of a tape recorder being turned on, before Kat’s clear vocals kick in, then the ticking of a clock drowned out by a kind of musical “snow”—a slightly bizarre introduction—after which the singer’s voice quickly returns, backed by the musicians, for a finale rooted in metalcore, no screaming, just the genre’s energy, much like what (for example) Mothica might offer. The next track, “I Feel Everything,” is again an energetic piece where the vocalist’s voice fully reveals itself in the chorus; the verses are charged with anger amplified by the vocal effects. Then the song explodes into a single scream before returning with a false gentleness for a final chorus where you feel all the emotions conveyed by the band. “Shadowalker” is energy mixed with raw emotion. Holy Wars has done an excellent job conveying emotion by addressing personal themes like grief—Kat lost her parents 10 years ago and her sister while writing this album—but doing so in a universal way. “Crucify” is the story of revenge and a suicidal relationship (“This love is a suicide. Cross my heart and I hope you die”) with a devastating break just the way we like them, and “Skin Deep” could be its logical sequel in terms of lyrics. This first section ends with I.F.O.Y.G., which slows down the somewhat forced pace a bit but remains in a vein as gloomy and graphic as some of the other tracks (“I’ll bury you face down And I’ll fuck on your grave”)
Then Light arrives, and we do indeed get the impression of something “lighter” starting with “Proof Of Existence,” like a ray of light piercing through the darkness; Kat’s voice guides us through this journey. And this renewed energy adds a bit of screaming toward the end of the track—even if it’s brief and we almost wish there were more of it—this short passage lends a new depth. The ultra-fast intro to “Kill The Light” hints at something almost new; the vocals become more “urgent” on the verses, while the chorus sometimes feels like something very Pop-Punk (or at least very Alternative), which shifts the dynamic—but fortunately not in a bad way. “Everything You” stays in this very catchy vibe, while “Holy Unholy” returns to something darker with an energy that leans more toward metalcore. This second part ends with “Metamorphosis”; this final track doesn’t completely close the chapter but hints that something else could be building behind the scenes and that the story isn’t over.
This new album by Holy Wars is deep, powerful, and deeply emotional. We let ourselves be carried away by the singer’s voice as she takes us on her cathartic journey—one we can all relate to—and we emerge from it almost…enriched?
