Le trio australien de Rock Alternatif Sick Puppies est de retour avec un nouvel album intitulé Wave The Bull, disponible depuis le 28 mars 2025 par le label Onerpm Records.
Il s’agit de leur grand retour après 9 ans d’absence, en effet leur dernier album Fury avait été sorti en 2016.
Un bon retour dans le passé avec une bonne touche de modernité avec There Goes The Neighborhood qui va marquer le comeback dans le Metal Game avec puissance et détermination. Un titre qui reste dans la tête très facilement et fait vite headbanger. Ensuite Friends Like You reprends l’intro et les codes tant appréciés de la phase Emo des années 2000. Ce morceau va taper un grand coup en calmant un peu le rythme et va taper dans le dos comme le ferait un vrai ami.
Creature va reprendre la construction du premier titre , avec en prime des breaks et des refrains plus posés et même une partie piano assez courte mais sympa qui reviendra conclure ce titre. Un peu de groove et une basse en contre temps pour Going Places avec une rythmique très marquée et saccadée. Mais Fix Me vient casser toute la brutalité qui a pu exister en mettant en avant la voix d’Emma Anzai (la bassiste) et proposant une chanson pleine de mélancolie. D’ailleurs cette dernière va parler à beaucoup d’ados rebelles et incompris de l’âge d’or de l’Emo. Knock Your Lights Out est à mon avis la réponse directe à la précédente chanson, comme un coup de pied au derrière qui te pousse à réagir.
Avec Find A Way c’est une chanson hors du temps qui se présente avec un duo de voix qui se réponds mais qui va cruellement manquer d’émotions et de puissance. C’est un peu un morceau Pop moderne sans intérêt. Tout le contraire de Feel Again qui va bien rattraper les choses avec plus de punch. Enfin une avalanche de puissance avec Hurricane et ça fait plaisir car cela commençait a devenir un peu redondant même si ce dernier est assez répétitif mais c’est sans compter le break qui vient tout casser et va en étonner plus d’un.
Dead & Buried va vite devenir un classique de cet album tant elle est simple et plus qu’efficace car après seulement deux écoutes je connais déjà les paroles du refrain. Et la rythmique pourrait clairement se retrouver dans les jeux vidéos de la WWE comme l’avait été leur titre You’re Going Down sorti en 2009 et présent sur le jeu Smackdown vs Raw 2010. Reprise de la même construction pour Fuck’Em All est d’un esprit proche de ceux des cris de guerre des cheerleaders. Pour finir c’est Halfway Home qui propose un duo de chant banal avec une mélodie plutôt molle et triste pour une conclusion oubliable.
Sick Puppies nous offre un album plein de rebondissements avec un retour dans le passé qui va faire plaisir aux fans de la première heure de Rock/Metal Alternatif mais malheureusement va aussi faire grincer quelques dents. L’album a de bonnes idées et d’autres oubliables, et malgré 12 chansons assez courtes pour la plupart on arrive a s’ennuyer un peu. Par contre pour quelqu’un qui souhaite découvrir ce style, cet opus est très clairement une étape.

Australian alternative rock trio Sick Puppies are back with a new album entitled Wave The Bull, available from Onerpm Records on March 28, 2025.
This is their big comeback after a 9-year absence, as their last album Fury was released in 2016.
A good return to the past with a touch of modernity with There Goes The Neighborhood, which will mark their comeback in the Metal Game with power and determination. A track that stays in the head very easily and gets you headbanging fast. Then Friends Like You picks up on the much-loved intro and codes of the 2000s Emo phase. This track kicks in, calming the pace a little and patting you on the back like a true friend.
Creature picks up where the first track left off, with the added bonus of more sedate breaks and choruses, and even a short but sweet piano part to round things off. A bit of groove and bass in counterpoint for Going Places, with its jerky rhythm. But Fix Me breaks all the brutality that may have existed, bringing Emma Anzai’s (the bassist’s) voice to the fore and offering a song full of melancholy. This song will speak to many a rebellious, misunderstood teenager from the golden age of Emo. Knock Your Lights Out is, in my opinion, a direct response to the previous song, like a kick in the backside that prompts you to react.
Find A Way is a timeless song with a duet of voices that respond to each other, but are cruelly lacking in emotion and power. It’s a bit of an uninteresting modern pop song. Quite the opposite of Feel Again, which makes up for it with more punch. At last, an avalanche of power with Hurricane, which is welcome because it was getting a little redundant, even if it is rather repetitive, but that’s without counting the break that breaks it all up and surprises many.
Dead & Buried will quickly become a classic on this album, as it’s so simple and more than effective: after just two listens, I already know the words to the chorus. And the rhythm could clearly be found in WWE video games, as was the case with their 2009 track You’re Going Down, featured on Smackdown vs Raw 2010. Fuck’Em All follows the same construction, with a spirit close to that of the cheerleaders’ battle cries. Finally, Halfway Home features a banal vocal duet with a soft, sad melody and a forgettable conclusion.
Sick Puppies delivers an album full of twists and turns, with a return to the past that will please fans of early Alternative Rock/Metal, but unfortunately will also grate on a few teeth. The album has some good ideas and some forgettable ones, and despite 12 songs, most of which are fairly short, it can get a little boring. On the other hand, for anyone wishing to discover this style, this opus is clearly a step in the right direction.
