[English version below] Annoncé il y a des mois de cela, la tournée anniversaire de The Poisoned Ascendancy passait enfin par Paris ce 7 février 2025. Une date unique en France à laquelle les fans de Bullet for my Valentine et Trivium ont évidement répondus présents ! Les Suédois d’Orbit Culture assuraient quant à eux la première partie. Nous avons eu la chance de nous rendre à cette date très spéciale : l’occasion d’assister à une prestation live de deux albums iconiques qui fêtaient leurs vingt ans cette année. Avant même que les portes ne s’ouvrent c’est l’effervescence autour du Zénith en ce vendredi soir. Venus nombreux et très tôt, les fans étaient plus que motivés et pressés d’assister au show. La file commence à avancer aux alentours de 18h30 pour une première annoncée à 19h15. Le temps pour nous de nous placer et d’aller visiter les stands de merchandising présents un peu partout.
Les suédois d’Orbit Culture entrent en scène à l’heure prévue. Sur un décor sobre mais efficace : quatre fanions de type médiéval avec un logo nordique, celui du groupe. Ceux-ci étaient éclairés ce qui rendait plutôt bien, même pour une première partie. Si nous ne connaissions pas le groupe de notre côté nous avons été surpris par le style tout d’abord. En effet nous aurions pensé assister à une entrée plus Metalcore, mais pourquoi pas finalement ! Le groupe de Death Mélodique suédois met malgré tout le feu dans la fosse qui offre de beau circle pit pendant sa prestation. Les membres de la formation prendront plusieurs fois la parole pour remercier le public, annonçant au passage qu’il s’agit de leur plus belle date en France. Orbit Culture finit son set avec Vultures of North et part sous les ovations du public.
20h15 sonne et Trivium entre sur scène sous les ovations du public et Hit the lights de Metallica. Tout à coup le public semble s’éveiller : la hype est bien présente en cette soirée d’anniversaire ! Le pit part au quart de tour dès les premières notes de leur album iconique : Ascendancy. Matt, le chanteur salue le public en français « Paris ça va ? »
Il prendra la parole tout au long du set utilisant le français mais aussi l’anglais, des moments très sympa « c’est magnifique mon ami« . Le groupe quant à lui offre une prestation digne de l’événement, on apprécie notamment les solos de guitares et l’éclairage qui suit la direction artistique incroyable de la scène de Trivium. Le groupe poursuit son set comme prévu en jouant les titres de Ascendancy dans l’ordre, l’occasion pour les fans de longue date ou les amateurs plus récents d’entendre en live un des albums les plus marquants de l’histoire de la formation américaine.
Après le troisième titre de son set Matt reprend la parole : » Bonsoir nous sommes trivium, comment ça va Paris welcome to poison ascendency tour we are partying for the 20th, the best crowd we add was Manchester, England, are you ready to beat Manchester ? Mon ami bougez vous avec moi ! » Il est désormais temps de lancer le titre éponyme de l’album : Ascendancy.
Le set se poursuit par a Gunshot to the head of Trepidation pendant lequel nous avons le droit à un solo de batterie impressionnant de la part d’Alex Bent. Dans le même temps le décor change en fond, la mise en scène avec de la fumée de part et d’autres est sacrément cool ! Le Zénith est désormais décoré par un ballon géant qui n’est autre que le personnage de la cover de leur album ! À la demande de Matt le circle pit se fait immense dans la salle, un beau spectacle autant sur scène que dans la fosse !
Le vocaliste de la formation, décidément bavard et aimant le partage avec son public reprend la parole : « Il y a 20 ans nous avons joué notre première date en France à la Boule Noire et il y avait peut être … 15 personnes ?! Regardez où nous en sommes aujourd’hui merci beaucoup Paris ! » Il poursuit et évoque sa santé mentale, le fait de vouloir être une meilleure personne, un meilleur front man etc., remercie le public pour son soutien et son inspiration. Il dédie le titre Departure, avant dernier morceau de l’album à chaque personne présente dans la salle. Le groupe concluera par Declaration et reviendra pour un tire supplémentaire sur scène : nous aurons le droit à In Waves accueilli avec bonheur dans un public chaud comme la braise.
Après un set plus que satisfaisant de la part de Trivium le concert poursuit en apothéose par les très attendus Bullet for my Valentine. Il est 22h15 quand le groupe de Metalcore fait son entrée sur scène sous d’impressionnants applaudissements de la part du public. Pourtant à ce stade, seule l’introduction instrumentale a été diffusé. C’est sur ce titre, originalement en feat avec Apocalyptica que les britanniques font leur apparition sur la scène du Zénith sous leur décor fait de trois crânes simplifiés qui sont en fait des écrans géants.
Comme prévu Bullet for my Valentine nous présente une version live de leur album et ce dans l’ordre originel des titres : le concert démarre donc par Her Voice Resides et 4 Words. Dans le public c’est l’éclate, le pit est plus qu’énergique, surtout après le passage de Trivium.
À la fin des deux titres Matt prend la parole pour remercier le public pour son accueil, il explique que le groupe est très content de se produire devant autant de personnes. Il parle des 20 ans de The Poison, de l’événement particulier que c’est pour eux puisqu’il s’agit de l’album avec lequel la formation a commencé sa carrière. Il indique que la chanson prochaine a changé leur vie et il espère qu’elle aura eu un impact positif dans la vie des gens en général. C’est l’effervescence pour la très connue et jamais égalée : Tear’s Don’t Fall. Le groupe remercie de nouveau le public à la fin du titre qui est passé beaucoup trop vite à notre goût.
Bullet for my Valentine reprend son set comme prévu et marque une nouvelle pause avant de lancer All These Things I Hate. Matt remercie le public pour ses vingt années de soutien, pour sa connexion mais aussi son énergie. Il invite les fans présents dans la salle à chanter avec eux pour le titre suivant, prétextant avec le sourire qu’il sait que le public connait les paroles. Il insiste également sur le fait que All these things est une chanson qui compte beaucoup pour les membres de Bullet for my Valentine. Le titre est donc, de nouveau, un moment d’émotion particulier mais également de partage avec un public qui hurle les paroles avec le vocaliste de la formation.
Le concert se poursuit dans une énergie drastiquement différente puisque les anglais poursuivent avec Hand of blood. Les crowdsurfers y font d’ailleurs leur apparition en masse dans la fosse ! La fin de The Poison est rythmée par des titres très énergiques et comprend de nombreux solos de guitare que nous apprécions énormément en live. Nous assistons également à des titres iconiques tel que Room 409 ou The Poison. Le concert se fini par The End qui porte terriblement bien son nom. Le riff de guitare et l’ambiance plus lourde et lente du début du titre nous emplit de nostalgie, nous le savons, la fin de ce morceau rime avec la fin de ce concert d’exception.
Mais Bullet for my Valentine n’a pas dit son dernier mot et fait plaisir à ses fans avec deux titres supplémentaires de sa discographie : tout d’abord la bien plus récente Knives tiré de leur album « Bullet for my valentine » de 2021. Et pour finir en beauté Waking the demon de leur second album, aussi iconique que le premier : Scream Aim Fire de 2008. Les anglais remercient leurs fans longuement avant de quitter la scène et de mettre fin à cette soirée de célébration.
Alors que dire de cette date ? Déjà, qu’il fallait y être et la vivre. Que ce soit moi ou Mary (aux photos) nous rêvions d’y assister. Après avoir écoutés ces albums en boucle pendant des années, quel plaisir de les voir être joués en intégralité sur scène avec une direction artistique digne de ce nom. Et quelles performances ! Les émotions étaient belles et bien présentes, alors que demander de plus ?
Une tournée des vingt ans pour l’album Scream Aim Fire peut-être ? L’espoir fait vivre !
[ENGLISH VERSION] Announced months ago, The Poisoned Ascendingancy’s anniversary tour finally came to Paris on February 7, 2025. A unique date in France to which fans of Bullet for my Valentine and Trivium obviously responded! The Swedes from Orbit Culture were the opening act. We were lucky enough to be there on this very special date: the opportunity to attend a live performance of two iconic albums that celebrated their twentieth anniversary this year. Even before the doors opened, there was excitement around the Zénith on this Friday evening. Coming in large numbers and very early, the fans were more than motivated and eager to attend the show. The line started moving around 6:30 p.m. for a first performance announced at 7:15 p.m. Time for us to get in place and go visit the merchandising stands present everywhere.
The Swedes of Orbit Culture enter the stage at the scheduled time. On a sober but effective decor: four medieval-style pennants with a Nordic logo, that of the group. These were lit up which looked pretty good, even for a first part. If we didn’t know the group on our side we were surprised by the style first of all. Indeed we would have thought to attend a more metalcore entrance, but why not finally! The Swedish melodic death group nevertheless sets the pit on fire which offers beautiful circle pit during its performance. The members of the group will speak several times to thank the public, announcing in passing that this is their best date in France. Orbit Culture ends its set with Vultures of North and leaves under the ovations of the public.
8:15 p.m. rings and Trivium enters the stage under the ovations of the public and Hit the lights by Metallica. Suddenly the audience seems to wake up: the hype is really present on this anniversary evening! The pit starts up at the quarter turn from the first notes of their iconic album: Ascendancy. Matt, the singer greets the audience in French « Paris ça va? »
He will speak throughout the set using French but also English, very nice moments « c’est magnifique mon ami« . The group for its part offers a performance worthy of the event, we appreciate in particular the guitar solos and the lighting which follows the incredible artistic direction of the Trivium stage. The group continues its set as planned by playing the titles of Ascendancy in order, the opportunity for long-time fans or more recent fans to hear live one of the most significant albums in the history of the American group. After the third song of his set Matt takes the floor again: « Good evening we are trivium, how are you Paris » welcome to poison ascendency tour we are partying for the 20th, the best crowd we add was Manchester, England, are you ready to beat Manchester? My friend, move with me! » It is now time to launch the eponymous title of the album: Ascendancy.
The set continues with a Gunshot to the head of Trepidation during which we are treated to an impressive drum solo from Alex Bent. At the same time the decor changes in the background, the staging with smoke on both sides is damn cool! The Zénith is now decorated with a giant balloon which is none other than the character from the cover of their album! At Matt‘s request the circle pit is huge in the room, a great show both on stage and in the pit!
The vocalist of the band, decidedly talkative and loving to share with his audience, takes the floor again: « 20 years ago we played our first date in France at La Boule Noire and there were maybe… 15 people?! Look where we are today, thank you very much Paris! » He continues and talks about his mental health, wanting a better person, a better front man, etc., thanks the audience for their support and inspiration. He dedicates the title Departure, the penultimate track of the album, to each person present in the room. The group will conclude with Declaration and will return for an additional track on stage: we will be treated to In Waves, happily welcomed by a hot-as-embroidered audience.
After a more than satisfactory set from Trivium, the concert continues in apotheosis with the highly anticipated Bullet for my Valentine. It is 10:15 p.m. when the metalcore group enters the stage to impressive applause from the audience. However, at this stage, only the instrumental introduction has been broadcast. It is on this title, originally in feat with Apocalyptica, that the British make their appearance on the Zénith stage under their decor made of three simplified skulls which are in fact giant screens.
As expected Bullet for my Valentine presents us with a live version of their album and this in the original order of the titles: the concert starts with Her Voice Resides and 4 Words. In the audience it’s a blast, the pit is more than energetic, especially after the passage of Trivium.
At the end of the two songs Matt takes the floor to thank the audience for their welcome, he explains that the group is very happy to perform in front of so many people. He talks about the 20 years of The Poison, of the special event that it is for them since it is the album with which the band began its career. He indicates that the next song has changed their lives and he hopes that it will have had a positive reception and impact on people’s lives in general. There is excitement for the very famous and never equaled: Tear’s Don’t Fall.
The group thanks the audience again at the end of the song which went by much too quickly for our taste. Bullet for my Valentine resumes its set as planned and takes a new break before launching All These Things I Hate. Matt thanks the audience for its twenty years of support, for its connection but also its energy. He invites the fans present in the room to sing with them for the next song, pretending with a smile that he knows that the audience knows the words. He also insists on the fact that All these things is a song that means a lot to the members of Bullet for my Valentine. The song is therefore, once again, a moment of particular emotion but also of sharing with an audience who screams the words with the vocalist of the band.
The concert continues with a drastically different energy since the English continue with Hand of blood. The crowdsurfers also make their mass appearance in the pit! The end of The Poison is punctuated by very energetic songs and includes many guitar solos that we really appreciate live. We also attend iconic songs such as Room 409 or The Poison. The concert ends with The End which is terribly aptly named. The guitar riff and the heavier and slower atmosphere at the beginning of the song fill us with nostalgia, we know it, the end of this song rhymes with the end of this exceptional concert.
But Bullet for my Valentine has not said its last word and pleases its fans with two additional tracks from its discography: first of all the much more recent Knives taken from their album « Bullet for my valentine » from 2021. And to finish in style Waking the demon from their second album, as iconic as the first: Scream Aim Fire from 2008. The English thank their fans at length before leaving the stage and ending this evening of celebration.
So what can we say about this date? First of all, we had to be there and experience it. Whether it was me or Mary (in the photos) we dreamed of attending. After listening to these albums on repeat for years, what a pleasure to see them played in their entirety on stage with an artistic direction worthy of the name. And what performances! The emotions were beautiful and very present, so what more could you ask for? A twentieth anniversary tour for the Scream Aim Fire album perhaps? Hope springs eternal!
