[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] Thornhill, le groupe de Metal Progressif australien, revenait en France en ce 26 novembre pour une date unique au Backstage by the mill à Paris. Si ça n’était pas la première fois que la formation foulait le sol français, c’était néanmoins la première fois qu’ils se produisaient en tant que tête d’affiche ! C’est dans une salle plutôt familière pour eux que le groupe était de retour et nous avons eu la chance de pouvoir répondre présent au rendez-vous. (En effet c’était le troisième concert des australien au Backstage !) Merci beaucoup à The Link Prod pour l’invitation à cette soirée que nous avons adoré !
C’est tout d’abord TSS ou The Sunday Sadness qui jouait ce soir. Le groupe français de Metal Moderne nous a proposé un set haut en couleurs et aux influences multiples : Emo sans nul doute d’autant que les membres de la formation ont tous un look alternatif, mais sont également présentes quelques touches de Nu-Metal ou même de Metalcore selon les titres. Si la majeure partie du public ne semble pas connaître le groupe TSS arrive néanmoins à faire participer la foule, notamment grâce aux demandes de Kirby , chanteur principal de la formation qui demande à plusieurs reprises « Ça va Paris ? Faites du bruit ! » On assistera notamment à un Pit plus mouvementé sur « Tes pleurs » chanson du groupe qui avait eu son petit succès sur la plateforme Tiktok à sa sortie. Le passage de TSS se finit par leur dernier titre en date Dead (2024) et le groupe quitte la scène en remerciant le public. Il les invite à passer les voir au stand de merch où ils se feront un plaisir de discuter avec eux et de prendre des photos. L’ambiance de la soirée est pour le moment assez détendue, une partie du public s’est échauffé pendant leur passage mais tout le monde semble attendre Thornhill de pied ferme !
Les Australiens prennent place sur la scène du Backstage après une très courte pause, nous n’avons même pas vu le temps passer ! Le groupe nous livre une performance à la fois voluptueuse et solide à l’image de sa discographie : ils démarrent le set par The Hellfire club qui embarque le public dans une vibe particulière et nostalgique. Dans la foule encore calme, beaucoup de fans chantent les paroles avec Jacob, vocaliste de la formation. Thornhill enchaîne avec deux titres supplémentaires de Heroine, son dernier album qui date de 2022 : Arkangel beaucoup plus lourd de part sa basse très présente et Raw avec son rythme spécial et le flow particulier au niveau du chant. On voit des gens sauter un peu partout dans la fosse. Les choses sérieuses commencent néanmoins avec Nerv sortie tout récemment, c’est l’effervescence dans un public qui semblait vraiment attendre ce titre !
Thornhill poursuit son set énergique avec trois titres de notre album préféré de sa discographie : The Dark Pool (2019). Nous aurons droit à View from the sun qui suit très bien Nerv et pendant laquelle le public semble énormément s’amuser. Le groupe, tout sourire, remercie la foule avant de lancer un moment plus doux et mélancolique avec Lily and the moon. Le temps semble s’arrêter dans un public qui chante les paroles en choeur avec Jacob. La magie opère bel et bien ! Cette accalmie sera de courte durée puisque Coven lancée derrière permet au public de reformer le petit pit créé durant Nerv. On y apprécie les aigus mais aussi les puissants screamo de Jacob et l’instru lourde et ambiante si chère à Thornhill.
Le concert se poursuit par deux titres très récent : Viper room et Obsession. Le premier titre, très rock et quelque peu vintage nous avait beaucoup plu à sa sortie et nous l’apprécions encore plus en live. Le second qui a donné son nom au dernier single de Thornhill est plus lent et suave, de quoi donner un nouveau ton à ce set qui comporte parmi toutes nos chansons préférées du groupe australien. En revanche, on ne le sait pas encore mais le concert arrive à sa fin. Jacob nous annonce en effet que le groupe a encore deux chansons en réserve pour ce soir. Si on prenait cela pour une blague puisque cela faisait seulement 35 minutes que Thornhill était sur scène il en sera finalement comme indiqué ! Casanova du dernier album viens compléter la setlist avec énergie et sera complété par When we go when we die de The dark pool, une façon de clôturer ce concert, bien trop court à notre goût, en beauté tout de même ! À la fin des deux morceaux, la foule qui se sera amusée jusqu’à la fin réclame un rappel en masse. C’est sans compter sur Thornhill qui a quitté la scène en faisant ses adieux unanimes à son public ! L’organisation est déjà en train de ranger les affaires, la soirée se fini plus tôt que prévu pour nous : il est à peine 21h40 !
Nous repartons de cette soirée complètement conquis par Thornhill dont la prestation ce soir était très très cool, déçue malgré tout par un concert très court de leur part. Nous aurions aimé entendre davantage de titre (onze seulement cela fait un peu léger). Néanmoins nous avons hâte de les revoir passer par chez nous et nous serons au rendez-vous tant la qualité du show était à la hauteur !
[ENGLISH VERSION] Thornhill, the Australian progressive metal band, returned to France on November 26th for a unique date at Backstage by the mill in Paris. If it wasn’t the first time the band set foot on French soil, it was nevertheless the first time they performed as headliners! It was in a rather familiar venue for them that the band was back and we were lucky enough to be able to answer the call. (Indeed it was the third concert of the Australians at Backstage!) Many thanks to The Link Prod for the invitation to this evening that we loved!
First of all, TSS or The Sunday Sadness played tonight. The French modern metal band offered us a colorful set with multiple influences: emo without a doubt, especially since the members of the band all have an alternative look, but there are also some touches of nu-metal or even metalcore depending on the songs. If most of the audience does not seem to know the group, TSS nevertheless manages to get the crowd involved, notably thanks to the requests of Kirby , the lead singer of the group who asks several times « Are you ok Paris? Make some noise! » We will notably witness a more lively Pit on « Tes pleurs » song of the group which had its little success on the Tiktok platform when it was released. TSS‘s passage ends with their latest title Dead (2024) and the group leaves the stage thanking the audience. He invites them to come see them at the merch stand where they will be happy to chat with them and take pictures. The atmosphere of the evening is for the moment quite relaxed, part of the audience warmed up during their passage but everyone seems to be waiting for Thornhill with bated breath!
The Australians take their place on the Backstage stage after a very short break, we didn’t even see the time go by! The band delivers a performance that is both volumptuous and solid, reflecting their discography: they start the set with The Hellfire club, which takes the audience into a special and nostalgic vibe. In the still calm crowd, many fans sing the lyrics with Jacob, the band’s vocalist. Thornhill continues with two additional tracks from Heroine, their latest album from 2022: Arkangel, much heavier due to its very present bass, and Raw with its special rhythm and particular flow in terms of vocals. We see people jumping all over the pit.
However, things get serious with Nerv, released very recently, and there’s excitement in an audience that seemed to be really waiting for this track! Thornhill continues his energetic set with three tracks from our favorite album in his discography: The Dark Pool (2019). We’ll be treated to View from the sun, which follows Nerv very well and during which the audience seems to be having a lot of fun. The band, all smiles, thanks the crowd before launching a softer and more melancholic moment with Lily and the moon. Time seems to stop in an audience that sings the lyrics in unison with Jacob. The magic really works! This lull will be short-lived since Coven launched behind allows the audience to reform the small pit created during Nerv. We appreciate the high notes but also the powerful screamo of Jacob and the heavy and ambient instrumental so dear to Thornhill.
The concert continues with two very recent titles: Viper room and Obsession. The first one, very rock and somewhat vintage, we really liked when it came out and we appreciate it even more live. The second one, which gave its name to Thornhill‘s latest single, is slower and smoother, enough to give a new tone to this set which includes among all our favorite songs from the Australian group. On the other hand, we don’t know it yet but the concert is coming to an end. Jacob announces that the band still has two songs in store for tonight. If we took this as a joke since Thornhill had only been on stage for 35 minutes, it will ultimately be as indicated! Casanova from the latest album completes the setlist with energy and will be completed by When we go when we die from The dark pool, a way to close this concert, much too short for our taste, in style all the same! At the end of the two songs, the crowd who will have had fun until the end demands a mass encore. That’s without counting on Thornhill who left the stage by unanimously saying goodbye to his audience! The organization is already packing up, the evening ends earlier than expected for us: it is barely 9:40 p.m.!
We leave this evening completely conquered by Thornhill whose performance tonight was very very cool, disappointed despite everything by a very short concert from them. We would have liked to hear more songs (only eleven is a bit light). Nevertheless we can’t wait to see them again when they come to our place and we will be there when they come to our place because the quality of the show was so high!
