[English version below] En ce 8 juin ensoleillé Superheaven était de retour à Paris pour une date unique en France à l’occasion d’une petite tournée de quelques dates en Europe ! Le groupe de grunge shoegaze originaire des États-Unis n’étais pas revenu chez nous depuis longtemps : son seul concert chez nous datait de 2014 ! Autant vous dire qu’il s’agissait là d’un événement à ne pas rater et c’était dans l’ambiance intimiste du Backstage by the mill que le concert avait lieu ce soir. Accompagnés des belges de Feverchild et des Français de chez Paerish, la date promettait beaucoup ! Merci à Alexis pour ses photos et à Opus Live pour les accréditations!
Le concert démarre assez tard : il est déjà 19h30 quand les belges de Feverchild entrent sur scène. Si dans le public personne ne semble connaître, on assume comprendre le choix de première partie : c’est posé, chill, la voix du chanteur est très sympa. Niveau instrumental, la basse est bien présente et groovy, le groupe est super bien accueilli et applaudit par le public dès la fin de son premier titre ! Les titres s’enchaînent sans que nous puissions récupérer les titres à notre grand damne : les belges jouent des titres avec des ambiances différentes, le quatrième de la soirée dénote du set, empreint de nostalgie et beaucoup plus lent : c’est comme une séquence émotion avec une petite progression instrumentale. Le groupe prendra le temps de remercier le public qui est venu plus tôt pour les voir, exprimant au passage que ce fût le cas pour chacune de leurs venues en France et que cela les rends contents. Ils annoncent qu’ils vont jouer deux nouveaux titres, le public acclame. La formation jouera quelques titres supplémentaires dont City of Flowers puis quittera les planches du Backstage en remerciant chaleureusement le public.
C’est après une longue intro que les français de Paerish prennent place sur scène. Instantanément l’ambiance change dans la salle : c’est très énergique, la voix du chanteur se veut quelque peu androgyne, assez aiguë, l’ensemble instrumental est cohérent mais à la fois un peu dissonant. Le groupe en entier aborde une énergie débordante sur scène, c’est catchy et ça entraîne super bien le public qui ne manque pas d’applaudir chaleureusement la performance du groupe de rock alternatif.
« Merci beaucoup Paris, il fait chaud hein. On s’appelle Paerish et on viens de cette ville, donc on est content. J’adore Metallica moi aussi (plaisante) ! « Ils prennent la parole pour expliquer que Superheaven a eu beaucoup d’influence, qu’ils ont réalisé leur rêve en allant enregistrer leur album dans le même studio qu’eux aux États-Unis. L’anecdote assez folle crée l’enthousiasme dans la salle et on comprend instantanément pourquoi les français sont heureux d’être présents ce soir et donnent tout !
Soucieux d’offrir à Superheaven une première partie de qualité, le groupe emporte la foule et l’engage à mettre le « bordel » pendant le set de Superheaven pour « leur montrer que la France est cool parce que le groupe aurait des a priori sur le public ici » (Taylor le chanteur). Après une prestation plus que sympa pendant laquelle le groupe aura beaucoup déconné avec le public (mais aussi entre eux sur scène) Paerish quitte la scène en laissant sonner ses guitares au sol !
Il est 21h20 quand il est l’heure pour Superheaven de monter sur scène. Les américains sont accueillis plus que chaleureusement par leur public chauffé et motivé par Paerish à donner le meilleur d’eux même ! Dès les premières notes du premier titre, la fosse sautille bien bien devant. Le public qui connait les paroles sur le bout des doigts chante en rythme avec le chanteur. Il ne faudra pas plus de trois titres pour que les crowdsurfers commencent leurs acrobaties enfin ce soir ! Le groupe a l’air content mais ne prend pas spécialement la parole pour l’exprimer, c’est un peu dommage.
Youngest Daughter, son titre le plus connu sera joué vers le début du set déclenchant une apothéose de réaction du public. Que ce soit la foule qui hurle les paroles ou les crowdsurfers très nombreux, tout le monde semble passer un excellent ! Il en sera de même pour d’autre titres tels que Poor Aileen ou encore Leach. Superheaven enchaîne les titres avec efficacité, prenant très peu la parole : ils remercieront notamment Feverchild et « leurs très chers amis français » Paerish et demanderont pour chacun une acclamation du public. Le set sera composé des titres de leurs albums de 2013 et 2015, mais aussi de certains, beaucoup plus récents, de leur albums éponyme sorti en avril 2025 !
C’est seulement avant de lancer leur rappel de deux titres que le groupe prendra la peine de remercier son public pour son énergie débordante et sa présence ce soir. Il est vrai que le groupe se veut assez timide sur la communication mais le public semblera content malgré tout et répondra avec panache à chaque prise de parole de Taylor, le vocaliste de la formation. C’est empreint d’une certaine nostalgie qui se retrouve dans les sonorités des titres de Superheaven que nous quittons le Backstage ce soir !
[ENGLISH VERSION] On this sunny June 8th, Superheaven returned to Paris for a one-off French date as part of a short European tour! The grunge shoegaze band from the United States hadn’t been back in Paris for a long time: their only concert here was in 2014! Needless to say, this was an event not to be missed, and the concert took place tonight in the intimate atmosphere of Backstage by the Mill. Accompanied by the Belgians Feverchild and the French band Paerish, the date promised a lot!
The concert started quite late: it was already 7:30 pm when the Belgians Feverchild took the stage. While no one in the audience seemed familiar, we assumed they understood the choice of opening act: it was laid-back, chilled, and the singer’s voice was very pleasant. Instrumentally, the bass is very present and groovy, the band is very well received and applauded by the audience from the end of their first song! The songs follow one after the other without us being able to catch up, much to our chagrin: the Belgians play songs with different moods, the fourth of the evening being a departure from the set, imbued with nostalgia and much slower: it’s like an emotional sequence with a short instrumental progression. The band takes the time to thank the audience who came early to see them, expressing in passing that this has been the case for each of their visits to France and that it makes them happy. They announce that they will be playing two new songs, to which the audience applauds. The band plays a few more songs, including City of Flowers, then leaves the Backstage stage, warmly thanking the audience.
After a long intro, the French band Paerish takes the stage. Instantly, the atmosphere in the room changes: it’s very energetic, the singer’s voice is somewhat androgynous, quite high-pitched, the instrumental ensemble is coherent but also a little dissonant. The entire band brings boundless energy to the stage; it’s catchy and really gets the audience going, and they warmly applaud the alternative rock band’s performance.
« Thank you very much, Paris, it’s hot, huh? Our name is Paerish and we’re from this city, so we’re happy. I love Metallica too (joking)! » They take the floor to explain that Superheaven had a lot of influence, that they realized their dream by recording their album in the same studio as them in the United States. This rather crazy anecdote creates enthusiasm in the room, and we instantly understand why the French are happy to be there tonight and are giving it their all!
Keen to offer Superheaven a quality opening act, the band won over the crowd and encouraged them to create a « mess » during Superheaven‘s set to « show them that France is cool because the band would have preconceived notions about the audience here » (Taylor, the singer).After a more than enjoyable performance during which the band had a lot of fun with the audience (and each other on stage), Paerish left the stage, their guitars ringing on the floor!
It was 9:20 pm when it was time for Superheaven to take the stage. The Americans were given a more than warm welcome by their excited audience, motivated by Paerish to give their best! From the first notes of the first song, the crowd was jumping up and down. The audience, who knew the lyrics like the back of their hand, sang along with the singer. It wouldn’t take more than three songs for the crowdsurfers to finally start their acrobatics tonight! The band seems happy but doesn’t really take the floor to express it, which is a bit of a shame.
Youngest Daughter, their most famous song, will be played towards the beginning of the set, triggering a resounding response from the audience. Whether it’s the crowd screaming the lyrics or the numerous crowdsurfers, everyone seems to be having a great time! The same goes for other songs such as Poor Aileen or Leach.
Superheaven plays the songs efficiently, speaking very little: they notably thank Feverchild and « their very dear French friends » Paerish and ask for a round of applause from the audience for each one. The set will feature tracks from their 2013 and 2015 albums, as well as some much more recent ones from their self-titled album, due out in April 2025!
It’s only before launching their two-song encore that the band takes the time to thank their audience for their boundless energy and presence tonight. It’s true that the band is rather shy about their communication, but the audience seems happy despite this and responds with panache to each speech by Taylor, the band’s vocalist. It’s with a certain nostalgia that can be found in the sounds of Superheaven‘s tracks that we leave the Backstage tonight!
