Seulement 2 ans après Shanty Punk, les anglais de Skinny Lister sont de retour avec Songs from the Yonder, leur septième album, paru chez Xtra Mile Recordings.
Avec cet album, le groupe reste en terrain connu et ils nous proposent une fois de plus un mélange savoureux entre folk et punk. L’identité du groupe et de cet album repose en partie à nouveau sur l’alternance au chant, entre Lorna et ses sonorités douces et esthétique (comme dans le morceau Tumbling Into Something) et l’énergie plus punk et rebelle de Dan, qu’on retrouve dans le morceau Plough On. Les deux chanteurs étant par ailleurs mari et femme, on retrouve aussi cet aspect familial dans l’album sur le très beau morceau Everything, chanté à l’unisson par Lorna et Dan.
Au delà de la personnalité de ces deux chanteurs, le groupe a également toujours eu une forte identité festive, que ce soit dans ses nombreux morceaux entrainants mais également dans ses concerts toujours joyeux. On retrouve cet aspect avec le morceau Drinking Song, qui constitue à mes yeux le meilleur morceau de l’album. Son refrain qui mêle lâcher-prise et ironie est accrocheur et je ne serai pas étonné de voir ce morceau devenir un incontournable pour les prochaines tournées du groupe. Dans la même veine, on retrouve également des morceaux à l’ambiance très pub ou shanty dans les morceaux Bristol Bound ou dans le premier morceau de l’album Yorkshire Belle.
Avec Songs From The Yonder, Skinny Lister revient avec un nouvel album plein de personnalité. Le groupe sait toujours manier les émotions et les ambiances avec son folk rock festif et touchant. Et avec un septième album en 13 ans, les anglais font preuve d’un rendement et d’une inspiration assez impressionnante.

Only two years after Shanty Punk, the English band Skinny Lister are back with Songs from the Yonder, their seventh album, released via Xtra Mile Recordings.
With this album, the band stays on familiar ground and once again delivers a delightful blend of folk and punk. The identity of the band—and of this album—partly rests on the alternating vocals: between Lorna’s soft, aesthetic tone (as heard on the track Tumbling Into Something) and Dan’s more punk, rebellious energy, showcased in Plough On. The two vocalists, who are also husband and wife, bring a familial touch to the album, especially on the beautiful track Everything, sung in unison by Lorna and Dan.
Beyond the personality of the two singers, the band has always had a strong festive identity, both in their many upbeat tracks and their always joyful live shows. This spirit shines through on Drinking Song, which I personally consider the best track on the album. Its chorus, mixing carefree vibes and irony, is incredibly catchy, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it become a staple of their future tours. In the same spirit, you’ll also find songs with a very pub or shanty feel, like Bristol Bound or the album opener Yorkshire Belle.
With Songs from the Yonder, Skinny Lister returns with a new album full of character. The band still masterfully navigates emotions and atmospheres with their festive, heartfelt folk rock. And with a seventh album in just 13 years, the English band continues to show impressive consistency and inspiration.
