En ce samedi 24 janvier, VeryShow nous a concocté une soirée inratable pour tout amateur de rock alternatif moderne. Le Backstage accueillait en effet une étape de l’alléchante tournée commune de Rain City Drive et Honey Revenge, avec également Belmont en première partie.
Il ne fallait pas arriver tard car Belmont est clairement un groupe qui vaut le détour, leurs deux derniers albums, Liminal (2024) et Aftermath (2022) sont de très grande qualité et leur dernier EP Last to Love (2025) ne fait que confirmer la montée en puissance de ce groupe qui propose un pop-punk saupoudré d’éléments metalcore et de touches électroniques. Emmené par leur chanteur Taz Johnson, le groupe ne fait pas face à un public complètement néophyte et un bon nombre de personnes dans l’audience semblent être également venus pour voir le groupe originaire de l’Illinois. Malgré une toux qui semble gêner Taz, la prestation du groupe est remarquable et plus qu’à la hauteur pour une première partie. Le groupe pioche parmi l’ensemble de sa discographie pour son set de 40 minutes mais aurait même pu plus se concentrer sur ses sorties les plus récentes, tant le groupe semble avoir trouvé sa recette et son identité propre sur ces dernières années. Pour une première partie, non seulement la qualité était au rendez-vous, mais l’ambiance également, ce qui ne présageait que du bon pour la suite des évènements. On espère et on attend désormais de revoir Belmont en tête d’affiche d’une tournée européenne!
Avec une tournée en co-headline comme celle-ci, on peut souvent se demander lequel des deux groupes jouera en dernier, et si la popularité de Honey Revenge et Rain City Drive semble effectivement similaire, c’est plutôt l’ancienneté qui a primé et on retrouve donc d’abord les plus jeunes Honey Revenge. Pour performer en live, le duo s’est entouré d’un batteur et d’une bassiste, qui assurent la partie rythmique pendant que Devin Papadol s’occupe du chant et Donny Lloyd de la guitare. Dès les premières seconde du groupe sur scène et emmenée par la charismatique chanteuse, on ressent une prestance et une confiance remarquable des californiens. Le premier album du groupe, Retrovision (2023) est une vraie pépite et les morceaux rendent également très bien en live : le public participe pleinement à leur faire prendre vie et même les musiciens ne peuvent s’empêcher de chanter les morceaux du groupe. Il faut dire que la recette du groupe est particulièrement efficace, entre énergie très rock et mélodies pop et catchy. Pendant la petite heure de son set, Honey Revenge passe en revue la quasi intégralité de son premier album, dont les tubes Habitual, Airhead ou Rerun. Le groupe nous fait également le privilège d’entendre un nouveau morceau inédit et très dansant, Hot Commodity. Celui-ci fera sans doute partie du prochain album que le groupe a prévu d’enregistrer après la tournée, comme nous le confirme Devin, qui ajoute que cet album sera à la hauteur de ce que mérite son public. On a clairement hâte et on ne doute pas que le duo sera à nouveau accueilli en France pour nous le présenter. Et après la claque que le groupe nous a donné ce soir, on sera là!
Les deux premiers groupes nous en ont déjà mis pleins les yeux et les oreilles et on attend désormais le main act de la soirée avec Rain City Drive. A l’instar des autres groupes de la soirée, le groupe est aussi en plein essor avec un très bon album sorti récemment, Things Are Different Now (2024). Si l’ambiance était jusque là très énergique et dansante, Rain City Drive apporte une vibe plus posée avec sa musique à la frontière de l’alternative rock et du post-hardcore. Le groupe est emmené par Matt McAndrew au chant et ce dernier prend une place assez imposante sur scène, faisant presque de l’ombre à ses camarades. Rien à redire cependant sur sa prestation vocale qui est à la hauteur de la qualité des enregistrements du groupe. Un petit hic tout de même sur l’utilisation un peu abusive de samples dans le set : on peut comprendre leur usage sur les morceaux issus de To Better Days (2020) qui utilisent beaucoup d’effets vocaux, mais sur le dernier morceau du set, Medicate Me, on entend en sample la voix de Matt alors que celui-ci ne chante pas sur scène, donnant un rendu assez surprenant. Le concert n’en reste pas moins agréable et l’ambiance plutôt bonne, en atteste les morceaux Like I Do et Talk to a Friend et leur refrain certes mélancolique mais fédérateur. Comme le reste de l’affiche, Rain City Drive est bien actif et nous propose son dernier single en date, Ride Or Die, qui présage potentiellement la sortie d’un nouvel album dans l’année!
Cette soirée en co-headline avec Honey Revenge et Rain City Drive était à prendre comme un tout, sans oublier Belmont, une première partie de luxe. Les trois groupes ont chacun attiré du monde, en atteste la bonne ambiance sur l’ensemble de la soirée et nul doute qu’une grande majorité du public a apprécié les trois groupes, tant ceux-ci étaient de qualité homogène et porteur d’un style moderne et authentique.

On this Saturday, January 24, VeryShow put together an unmissable evening for any fan of modern alternative rock. The Backstage was hosting a stop on the highly enticing co-headlining tour of Rain City Drive and Honey Revenge, with Belmont opening the night.
You had better not arrive too late, as Belmont are clearly a band worth seeing. Their two latest albums, Liminal (2024) and Aftermath (2022), are of very high quality, and their most recent EP, Last to Love (2025), only confirms the band’s steady rise. Belmont deliver a pop-punk sound infused with metalcore elements and electronic touches. Led by vocalist Taz Johnson, the band are not facing a completely unfamiliar audience, with a good number of people in attendance seemingly there specifically to see the Illinois natives. Despite a cough that appears to trouble Taz, the band’s performance is outstanding and more than lives up to the expectations of an opening act. The band draw from across their entire discography for their 40-minute set, though they could easily have focused more on their most recent releases, as this is where they seem to have truly found their formula and their own identity in recent years. For an opening act, not only was the quality undeniable, but the atmosphere was already there as well—boding extremely well for the rest of the evening. We can only hope and look forward to seeing Belmont return soon as headliners of a European tour.
With a co-headlining tour like this, one often wonders which of the two bands will close the night. While the popularity of Honey Revenge and Rain City Drive does seem fairly comparable, seniority ultimately prevailed, meaning the younger Honey Revenge took the stage first. For their live performances, the duo are joined by a drummer and a bassist, who handle the rhythm section while Devin Papadol takes care of vocals and Donny Lloyd of guitar duties.From the very first seconds on stage, led by their charismatic singer, the Californians display a striking sense of presence and confidence. The band’s debut album, Retrovision (2023), is a real gem, and the songs translate exceptionally well to the live setting: the crowd fully participates in bringing them to life, and even the musicians themselves can’t help but sing along to the band’s tracks. It must be said that Honey Revenge’s formula is particularly effective, blending strong rock energy with catchy, pop-driven melodies.Over the course of their nearly hour-long set, Honey Revenge run through almost the entirety of their debut album, including standouts such as Habitual, Airhead, and Rerun. The band also treat the audience to a brand-new, unreleased and highly danceable track, Hot Commodity. This song will most likely appear on the next album the band plan to record after the tour, as Devin confirms, adding that the record will live up to what their audience deserves.We’re clearly looking forward to it, and there’s little doubt the duo will be welcomed back to France to present it. After the absolute knockout performance they delivered tonight, we’ll definitely be there.
The first two bands had already given us more than enough to see and hear, and it was now time to look forward to the night’s main act: Rain City Drive. Like the other bands on the bill, the group is currently on the rise, having recently released a very solid album, Things Are Different Now (2024). While the atmosphere up to this point had been highly energetic and danceable, Rain City Drive brought a more restrained vibe, with music sitting at the crossroads of alternative rock and post-hardcore.The band are led by vocalist Matt McAndrew, who takes up a rather commanding presence on stage, at times almost overshadowing his bandmates. There is nothing to fault, however, when it comes to his vocal performance, which lives up to the quality of the band’s studio recordings. There is one small drawback, though, regarding the somewhat heavy use of samples during the set: while their use is understandable on songs from To Better Days (2020), which rely heavily on vocal effects, it feels more questionable on the final song of the set, Medicate Me, where Matt’s voice can be heard in a sample while he is not singing on stage, resulting in a rather surprising effect.That said, the concert remains enjoyable overall, with a solid atmosphere throughout, as evidenced by songs like Like I Do and Talk to a Friend, whose choruses, while melancholic, are nonetheless unifying. Like the rest of the lineup, Rain City Drive remain very active and also treated us to their latest single, Ride Or Die, which potentially hints at the release of a new album later this year.
This co-headlining evening with Honey Revenge and Rain City Drive was best taken as a whole, without forgetting Belmont, a truly high-end opening act. Each of the three bands drew its own crowd, as evidenced by the great atmosphere throughout the night, and there is little doubt that a large majority of the audience enjoyed all three performances. The overall quality was remarkably consistent, with each band delivering a modern and authentic sound.
