[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] PRESIDENT a débarqué il y’a peu dans le paysage Alternatif, un nouveau projet masqué dont la voix semble pourtant familière à beaucoup de monde mais ici nous ne sommes pas là pour spéculer sur sa possible identité (même si, quand même…) et il est temps d’évoquer le tout premier EP sorti il y’a quelques jours, King Of Terrors! Le titre de ce premier effort est par ailleurs une référence biblique à la mort et PRESIDENT va y évoquer des thèmes comme les ténèbres ou encore le culte.
C’est avec In The Name Of The Father que va s’ouvrir cet EP, on est déjà plongé dans une ambiance qui oscille entre gothique et qui fait presque office de culte à PRESIDENT, mais la quiétude est vite rompue par les riffs saisissants, le premier cri du frontman qui vient nous retourner et la dynamique de la batterie avant que tout ne retombe brutalement et qu’on ne se laisse envahir par la douceur et le chant clair. Un passage parlé qui évoque l’espoir (« We all choose to find hope Because hope is choosing to find meaning In a meaningless world ») avant de replonger dans quelque chose de plus brutal où la voix du chanteur se fait plus claire mais oscille tout de même vers quelque chose de très Metalcore avec quelques screams déchirants. PRESIDENT remet ici en question les fondements même du culte et de la religion avec des paroles criantes de vérité telles que « Oh, Father, I can’t hear You yet » ou encore « I’m a fool, a sucker for a fantasy.You’rе a fable I could love », le titre de l’EP est d’ailleurs évoqué lui aussi dans les couplets comme quelque chose (ou quelqu’un) à fuir. Le final du titre se fait avec des paroles en arrière-plan avant un « Father » chuchoté et une explosion de riffs et de cris avant les dernières paroles a capella le fameux « Oh Father, I can’t hear You yet ».
On enchaîne avec LE coup de coeur de King Of Terrors à savoir Fearless construit comme un cri du coeur cathartique, on est encore emportés par les guitares dès le début avant de retrouver le chant clair (blindé d’auto-tune qui disparaît heureusement sur le refrain). Refrain d’ailleurs qui reste une des pièces maîtresses de cet EP. Un final où le mot Fearless est repris plusieurs fois sur des guitares hyper catchy avant RAGE et son début très Electro/RnB tout en gardant un côté très éthéré et des parties instrumentales particulièrement mises en valeur, on semble distinguer la psyché d’un amour détruit mais également des appels à un dieu qui restent sans réponse (« If you make a sound, will you hold me when I’m in the ground? I’ll keep drinking my way out Could you love me then? Would you love me then? ») avant que le morceau ne finisse par exploser encore une fois, PRESIDENT maîtrise parfaitement le calme mais aussi cette tempête brute qui fait rage au fond de lui. Là où Destroy Me et ses paroles viscérales vont à nouveau faire un travail considérable sur les émotions, le morceau est d’ailleurs le plus axé Metalcore sur King Of Terrors même si les parties plus calmes sont toujours présentes, elles semblent noyées par ce côté plus « violent ».
Dionysus reprend ces mêmes patterns instrumentaux et vocaux tout en mettant les cris de côté mais pas bien longtemps puisqu’ils finissent par surgir sur le final mais en gardant un refrain puissant et parfaitement taillé pour la scène avant que PRESIDENT ne tire sa révérence avec Conclave et son côté encore très inspiré par la mouvance RnB (plutôt intéressant de mélanger ce genre musical avec tout les autres exploités ici), le vocaliste chante ici sur un amour passé mais qui survivra à tout même à la mort : « Tell me, will I see you in the afterlife? Shooting my guns at everyone Telling myself it’s hardly worth drinking here alone ‘Cause you never hold me through my darkest nights But I would love you anyway, even in the afterlife »
PRESIDENT a crée la surprise il y’a quelques mois tout comme son (pas si) mystérieux (que ça) frontman , et avec King Of Terrors, il délivre une offrande très intéressante et qu’on ne lasse pas d’écouter avec des influences diverses et variées. Un seul bémol cependant : L’utilisation relativement excessive de l’auto-tune qui en vient à gâcher un peu l’expérience.

[ENGLISH VERSION] PRESIDENT recently arrived on the alternative scene, a new masked project whose voice seems familiar to many, but we’re not here to speculate on his possible identity (even if, still…) and it’s time to talk about the very first EP released a few days ago, King Of Terrors! The title of this first effort is a biblical reference to death, and PRESIDENT explores themes such as darkness and worship.
The EP opens with In The Name Of The Father, and we are immediately plunged into an atmosphere that oscillates between gothic and almost cult-like, but the tranquillity is quickly broken by striking riffs, the frontman’s first cry that turns us upside down, and the dynamics of the drums before everything suddenly falls back and we are overwhelmed by softness and clear vocals. A spoken passage evokes hope (‘We all choose to find hope Because hope is choosing to find meaning In a meaningless world’) before plunging back into something more brutal, where the singer’s voice becomes clearer but still oscillates towards something very Metalcore with a few heart-rending screams. Here, PRESIDENT questions the very foundations of cult and religion with lyrics that ring true, such as ‘Oh, Father, I can’t hear You yet’ and « I’m a fool, a sucker for a fantasy. You’re a fable I could love‘. The title of the EP is also mentioned in the verses as something (or someone) to flee from. The song ends with lyrics in the background before a whispered “Father” and an explosion of riffs and screams before the final a cappella lyrics, the famous ’Oh Father, I can’t hear You yet ».
We move on to King Of Terrors‘ favourite track, Fearless, constructed like a cathartic cry from the heart. We are once again carried away by the guitars from the outset before returning to the clear vocals (heavily auto-tuned, which fortunately disappears on the chorus). The chorus remains one of the centrepieces of this EP. The finale sees the word « Fearless » repeated several times over hyper-catchy guitars before RAGE kicks in with its very Electro/RnB beginning, while retaining a very ethereal feel and particularly prominent instrumental parts. We seem to discern the psyche of a destroyed love, but also calls to a god that remain unanswered (« If you make a sound, will you hold me when I’m in the ground? I’ll keep drinking my way out Could you love me then? Would you love me then? ») before the track explodes once again. PRESIDENT masters both the calm and the raw storm raging inside him. Where Destroy Me and its visceral lyrics once again do a remarkable job of stirring up emotions, the track is also the most metalcore-oriented on King Of Terrors. Although the quieter parts are still present, they seem to be drowned out by this more ‘violent’ side.
Dionysus takes up these same instrumental and vocal patterns, leaving the screams aside, but not for long, as they eventually emerge in the finale, while maintaining a powerful chorus perfectly tailored for the stage, before PRESIDENT takes its bow with Conclave and its still very RnB-inspired side (it’s rather interesting to mix this musical genre with all the others exploited here). The vocalist sings here about a past love that will survive everything, even death (‘Tell me, will I see you in the afterlife? Shooting my guns at everyone Telling myself it’s hardly worth drinking here alone ‘Cause you never hold me through my darkest nights But I would love you anyway, even in the afterlife’).
PRESIDENT created a surprise a few months ago, as did its (not so) mysterious frontman, and with King Of Terrors, it delivers a very interesting offering that you never tire of listening to, with diverse and varied influences. There is one downside, however: the relatively excessive use of auto-tune, which spoils the experience a little.
