[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] L’artiste Alternatif Nathan James a sorti son tout premier album studio Hollywood Mortician il y’a quelques jours via le label Crowdkill Records (label fondé par Lorenzo Antonucci de Sworn Enemy). Nathan mélange les genres musicaux tels que le goth, le Metal ou encore même la Trap ce qui en fait un artiste intéressant sur lequel se pencher, il a également ouvert pour de nombreux groupes influents comme In This Moment, Attila , Butcher Babies ou encore Kim Dracula!
Crown Of The Thorns commence par une intro assez bizarre sur lequel on distingue une voix parlée mais également les cliquetis d’un clavier d’ordinateur, le morceau enchaîne rapidement avec un chant « crié » assez particulier, des riffs de guitares vifs et un refrain entraînant (et plus Rock) qui en fait une bonne introduction avant d’enchaîner sur un deuxième couplet plus rappé. On pourrait quand même dire que ce premier titre est un sacré bordel et c’est un peu le cas mais le tout est vraiment intéressant, on retrouve également sur la dernière partie du scream et des influences Nu-Metal. Ghost Under The Veil enchaîne sans temps mort avec une intro qui tombe dans le rap avant que l’instrumental plus Metal ne vienne faire bouger les têtes. L’artiste évolue ici dans un genre alternant entre le Metalcore et le Nu Metal, des influences prépondérantes dans ses morceaux! Lost Angeles et ses vocaux particulièrement angoissants et son ambiance un peu lugubre relevée par un refrain en chant clair reste une bonne composition qu’on pourrait qualifiée d’influencée par quelque chose de plus Trap même si les riffs de guitares reviennent vite à la charge. Ce premier album se veut menaçant et extrêmement énergique comme le prouve encore un morceau comme The Hanged Man alors que Misanthrope va ralentir un peu la cadence…enfin jusqu’au deuxième couplet, où la hargne de l’artiste va prendre le dessus.
Alienation a été le premier single a avoir été dévoilé pour cet album et là encore ce fut un très bon choix! Nathan se révèle en excellent rappeur évoluant sur un morceau qu’on pourrait certes considéré comme plus Mainstream/Nu Metal (plus influencé par Linkin Park que Ghostemane par exemple) que ses compositions plus précédentes mais qui sera une excellente porte d’entrée à son univers. On retrouve un featuring avec le groupe de Metal Indus, Orgy , sur le titre Nails là encore le morceau s’inscrit dans la lignée du précédent et reste plus abordable que le reste de l’album mais cela n’en fait pas un moins bon morceau! Appetite montre encore une fois à quel point le chanteur est polyvalent vocalement parlant ce qui sera un très bon point pour la suite de sa carrière! Funeral continuera d’écraser les auditeurs autant par son ambiance que par ses parties instrumentales qui seraient bien capables de retourner un pit en moins de temps qu’il n’en faut pour dire Ouf. L’album se termine avec Tickets To Your Downfall (une référence au Tickets To My Downfall de MGK??) on pourrait le croire à la vue de l’artwork du morceau et notamment à la vidéo du clip sur lequel Nathan appelle son public à hurler « Fuck MGK », la guerre est donc déclarée entre les deux artistes et Tickets To Your Downfall serait une réponse directe de Nathan à Colson Baker (le clip est à retrouver ci-dessous et une explication y’est donnée).
Ce premier album de Nathan James est un bon premier pas dans l’univers d’un artiste polyvalent, provocateur et sombre. Le chanteur mélange ses diverses influences tout en n’arrivant à ne pas perdre son auditoire, ce qui est plutôt une très bonne chose! Hollywood Mortician ne sera peut-être pas l’album de l’année mais il a de sérieux atouts pour la suite de la carrière de Nathan!

[ENGLISH VERSION] Alternative artist Nathan James released his debut studio album Hollywood Mortician a few days ago via Crowdkill Records (a label founded by Lorenzo Antonucci of Sworn Enemy). Nathan blends musical genres such as goth, metal, and even trap, making him an interesting artist to check out. He has also opened for many influential bands such as In This Moment, Attila, Butcher Babies, and Kim Dracula!
Crown Of The Thorns begins with a rather bizarre intro featuring a spoken voice and the clicking of a computer keyboard. The song quickly transitions into a rather unusual “screamed” vocal, lively guitar riffs, and a catchy (and more rock-oriented) chorus, making it a good introduction before moving on to a second, more rap-oriented verse. You could say that this first track is a bit of a mess, and that’s kind of true, but it’s really interesting. The last part also features screaming and Nu-Metal influences. Ghost Under The Veil follows on without pause with an intro that falls into rap before the more Metal instrumental kicks in and gets heads nodding. The artist moves between metalcore and nu metal, which are the predominant influences in his songs! Lost Angeles, with its particularly disturbing vocals and slightly gloomy atmosphere lifted by a clear chorus, is a good composition that could be described as influenced by trap, even if the guitar riffs quickly return to the fore. This first album is meant to be menacing and extremely energetic, as proven by a track like The Hanged Man, while Misanthrope slows down the pace a bit… at least until the second verse, where the artist’s aggression takes over.
Alienation was the first single to be released from this album, and once again it was a very good choice! Nathan proves himself to be an excellent rapper on a track that could certainly be considered more mainstream/nu metal (more influenced by Linkin Park than Ghostemane, for example) than his previous compositions, but which serves as an excellent introduction to his world. There is a collaboration with the industrial metal band Orgy on the track Nails, which is again in line with the previous track and remains more accessible than the rest of the album, but that doesn’t make it any less of a good track! Appetite shows once again how versatile the singer is vocally, which will be a very good thing for the rest of his career! Funeral will continue to overwhelm listeners with its atmosphere and instrumental parts, which are capable of turning a pit upside down in less time than it takes to say “phew.” The album ends with Tickets To Your Downfall (a reference to MGK‘s Tickets To My Downfall??) as one might think from the artwork for the track and especially the video clip in which Nathan calls on his audience to shout “Fuck MGK”. so war is declared between the two artists, and Tickets To Your Downfall is Nathan‘s direct response to Colson Baker (the video clip can be found below, along with an explanation).
This debut album from Nathan James is a good first step into the world of a versatile, provocative, and dark artist. The singer blends his various influences while managing not to lose his audience, which is a very good thing! Hollywood Mortician may not be the album of the year, but it has serious potential for Nathan‘s future career!
