[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] Certains connaissent bien Michael Clifford comme étant le guitariste/chanteur du groupe australien 5 Seconds Of Summer, mais aujourd’hui l’artiste se lance en solo en sortant son premier album Sidequest, le 25 juillet prochain via Hopeless Records. Un album fait pour ses fans et qui traite des relations humaines.
Le titre kill me for always ouvre ce premier album sur des notes de guitare accoustique suivies de la voix du chanteur ça semble être trop doux ou trop beau pour durer et c’est effectivement le cas puisque des sonorités plus Electro vont arriver, et ce passage est orchestré par l’artiste Porter Robinson (DJ et chanteur américain) mais les passages plus calmes reviennent quand même, le mélange est assez spécial mais pas désagréable! Suit le single cool plus Pop-Rock avec un côté très entraînant, rien de très surprenant dans ce genre de morceaux auquel Clifford nous a déjà habitués avec 5SOS. Le morceau traite d’une relation amoureuse où le protagoniste cherche à impressionner la personne en face mais c’est parfois difficile quand on est » the guy who caught fire with the colored hair from the band with the song about underwear » ( le gars qui a fait sensation avec ses cheveux colorés du groupe qui a fait une chanson sur les sous-vêtements ). give me a break est un autre featuring sur cet album cette fois-ci avec Waterparks ou plutôt Awsten Knight! Le titre aurait été plus sympa avec une batterie et une rythmique différente…et malheureusement le duo n’apporte pas grand-chose ou alors une dynamique différente à l’ensemble? On pourrait penser que remember when va relever notre intérêt mais ce n’est pas le cas là où on s’attend à des titres plus énergiques on a au final quelque chose de très Pop mais de pas très Rock (voir pas du tout). enough reste un bon morceau Pop où la voix du chanteur est très bien mise en valeur mais rien de transcendant là encore…
fashion revient sur une vibe très entraînante et permet de faire revenir l’intérêt pour ce premier album, intérêt qui semble s’être bien perdu depuis le feat avec Awsten…thirsty est LA ballade de l’album et c’est typiquement le style de morceau qui s’accorde parfaitement avec les titres qui ont retenus notre attention. if i had a choice en duo avec Ryan Hall continue à tirer sur la longueur, pour dix morceaux n’excédant pas trois minutes pour la plupart c’est quand même triste… C’est avec eclipse que Sidequest va se terminer, un titre très court qui semble évoquer la parentalité de l’artiste puisqu’on peut y retrouver (si on tend bien l’oreille) des babillages et des rires d’enfants!
Ce premier album solo permet de découvrir l’univers à part entière de Michael Clifford malheureusement malgré quelques bons titres, le reste est plutôt fade et dépourvu d’intérêt! Bien dommage quand on connaît son potentiel…

[ENGLISH VERSION] Some people know Michael Clifford as the guitarist/singer of the Australian band 5 Seconds Of Summer, but today the artist is launching his solo career with the release of his first album, Sidequest, on July 25 via Hopeless Records. An album made for his fans, it deals with human relationships.
The track kill me forever opens the album with acoustic guitar notes followed by the singer’s voice. It seems too sweet or too good to last, and indeed it does, as more electro sounds kick in. This passage is orchestrated by artist Porter Robinson (American DJ and singer), but the calmer passages return nonetheless. The mix is quite unique but not unpleasant! Next comes the cool, more pop-rock single with a very catchy feel, nothing very surprising in this kind of song, which Clifford has already accustomed us to with 5SOS. The song is about a romantic relationship where the protagonist is trying to impress the person opposite, but it’s sometimes difficult when you’re « the guy who caught fire with the colored hair
from the band with the song about underwear. » give me a break is another collaboration on this album, this time with Waterparks, or rather Awsten Knight! The track would have been better with different drums and rhythm…and unfortunately, the duo doesn’t add much, or perhaps a different dynamic to the whole? You might think that remember when would pique our interest, but that’s not the case. Where we expect more energetic tracks, we end up with something very pop but not very rock (or not at all). enough remains a good pop song where the singer’s voice is showcased very well, but again, nothing transcendent…
fashion returns to a very catchy vibe and revives our interest in this first album, interest that seems to have been lost since the collaboration with Awsten… thirsty is THE ballad of the album and is typically the kind of track that fits perfectly with the tracks that caught our attention. if i had a choice, a duet with Ryan Hall, continues to drag on, which is sad considering that most of the ten tracks are less than three minutes long… Sidequest ends with eclipse, a very short track that seems to evoke the artist’s parenthood, as you can hear (if you listen carefully) children babbling and laughing!
This first solo album allows us to discover Michael Clifford‘s unique universe, but unfortunately, despite a few good tracks, the rest is rather bland and uninteresting! It’s a shame when you know his potential…
