[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] Pour la promo de leur nouvel album Colossal, j’ai eu le plaisir de poser quelques questions à Svend, guitariste du groupe Baest. Merci à Niels de Oktober Promotion pour cette opportunité !
1/Bonjour et merci d’avoir pris le temps de répondre à cette interview. Votre nouvel album Colossal sortira le 15 août 2025. En quoi se distingue-t-il de vos précédents albums ?
Bonjour, et bien sûr ! Colossal est un album très différent, principalement en raison de ses sons et influences heavy metal plus classiques. C’est un album expérimental de notre part, qui s’écarte légèrement du death metal traditionnel pour explorer de nouvelles voies !
2/ Sur Colossal, il y a un équilibre entre l’héritage death metal et les influences heavy/traditionnelles. Comment avez-vous travaillé sur cette combinaison de riffs rapides, mélodiques et plus classiques ?
Cela s’est fait spontanément dans la salle de répétition. L’amour de chacun pour Dio, Ozzy, Priest et autres ne pouvait plus être réprimé. Nous écrivons toujours nos morceaux ensemble, et cette fois-ci, nous nous sommes vraiment éclatés !
3/ Vous avez travaillé avec Tue Madsen à AntfarmStudio. Qu’a-t-il apporté à cet enregistrement en particulier ?
C’était en fait la première fois que nous travaillions avec Tue, ce qui rend cet album très spécial à cet égard. Tue est une légende dans le milieu. Son courage, son attitude sans concession et sa connaissance approfondie de tout ce qui touche au metal nous ont énormément aidés à créer des détails pour les auditeurs. Tue nous a aidés à créer cet album, un album très différent de ce que nous avons fait auparavant, et nous avions besoin de ses conseils. Tue le gourou
4/ L’enregistrement a pris deux ans. Comment ce délai a-t-il influencé les arrangements et la cohésion de l’album ?
Les morceaux ont changé un grand nombre de fois, et nous avons pu essayer presque tous les morceaux en live avant de nous décider sur les arrangements. Cette méthode était géniale, et en tant que groupe de scène, c’était formidable de pouvoir travailler ainsi.
5/ Les singles « Colossus » et « Imp Of The Perverse » sont sortis il y a près d’un an. Pourquoi avez-vous choisi de les dévoiler si tôt ? Avec le recul, avez-vous décidé de les retravailler ou de réajuster le reste des compositions pour maintenir la cohérence ?
Avec le recul, ces singles auraient pu être gardés sous le coude pendant un certain temps, mais ils ont laissé place à une créativité dont nous avions grand besoin. Nous n’avons rien retravaillé, et c’était agréable de les avoir comme point d’ancrage pour cette sortie.
6/ Comment s’est passée la collaboration avec Jesper Binzer de D-A-D sur « King Of The Sun » ? Et celle avec ORM sur « Misfortunate Son » ? Qu’ont apporté ces invités à l’univers de Colossal ?
Les deux collaborations ont été géniales et c’était quelque chose que nous voulions faire depuis longtemps. Jesper était un rêve devenu réalité, et cela nous semblait encore incroyable, et Orm sont nos grands amis – donc les avoir sur l’album est très significatif pour nous en tant que groupe. Et la voix rock de Jesper et l’atmosphère black metal d’Orm ajoutent à la grande variété de sons sur Colossal !
7/ Vous dites avoir « réinventé » votre style et votre son. Concrètement, comment cela s’est-il traduit ?
Le style s’est considérablement élargi, mais sans abandonner les racines traditionnelles du death metal. Nous y avons intégré toutes nos inspirations personnelles, et nous pensons que cela donne un album complexe et passionnant !
8/Vous avez joué certains des nouveaux morceaux en live avant même la sortie de l’album. Les réactions du public ont-elles influencé la version finale ?
Les réactions ont certainement influencé les chansons, c’est pourquoi nous voulions les jouer avant l’enregistrement. Lasse a lu quelque part que Carcass avait joué tout Heartwork avant l’enregistrement, et c’est ainsi que la décision a été prise…
9/ La pochette de Colossal a été créée par Solomacello. Quelle était votre vision artistique derrière cette pochette ?
L’idée était d’essayer de marier Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest et quelque chose de bestial. Solomacello a parfaitement réussi !
10/ Quels sont vos projets à court et à long terme pour votre carrière ?
– Le projet est de faire des tournées, encore des tournées, et encore des tournées. Nous sommes un groupe de scène, et nous vivons pour cette interaction.
11/ Quels artistes/groupes trouve-t-on actuellement dans ta playlist, et lesquels recommanderais-tu à nos lecteurs ?
En ce moment : Dying Fetus, The Halo Effect, Bolt Thrower, Megadeth, Dissection. Je recommande vivement le dernier album de Dying Fetus, Make Them Beg For Death.

[ENGLISH VERSION] To promote their new album Colossal, I had the pleasure of asking Svend from the band Baest a few questions. Thanks to Niels from Oktober Promotion for this opportunity!
1/Hello and thank you for taking the time to do this interview. Your new album Colossal is out on August 15, 2025. What sets it apart from your previous albums?
Hello, and of course! Colossal is a very different album, mainly because of the more classic heavy letal sounds and influences. It’s an experimental release on our part, differing slightly from the traditional death metal path, onto new paths!
2/ On Colossal, there’s a balance between death metal heritage and heavy/traditional influences. How did you work on this combination of fast, melodic, and more classic riffs?
this happened spontaneously in the rehearsal space. Everyone’s love for dio, Ozzy, priest and so forth, couldn’t be caged anymore. We always write our stuff together, and oh boy did we have fun this time around!
3/ You worked with Tue Madsen again at AntfarmStudio. What did he bring to this recording in particular?
this was actually the first time we worked with Tue, making it a very special release in that way too. Tue is a legend in the game. His courage, no filler attitude and giant knowledge of everything metal helped us immensely, creating details for the listeners. Tue helped us create this album, an album so different from what we’ve done before, and we needed his guidance. Tue The Guru
4/ The recording took two years. How did this timeframe influence the arrangements and cohesion of the album?
the tracks changed a big number of times, and we got to try almost all of the tracks live, before settling on arrangements. This method was awesome, and as a live band it was great to be able to work like this.
5/ The singles “Colossus” and “Imp Of ThePerverse” were released almost a year ago. Why did you choose to unveil them so early? Did hindsight lead you to rework them or readjust the rest of the compositions to maintain consistency?
in hindsight, those singles could have been held for some time, but they made space for some creativity which was very needed. We didn’t rework anything, and it was nice to have them as an anchor for this release.
6/ How did the collaboration with Jesper Binzer from D-A-D on “King Of The Sun” go? And the one with ORM on “Misfortunate Son”? What did these guests add to the Colossal universe?
both collabs was awesome and something we have wanted to do for a long time. Jesper was a really big dream come true, and still seemed incredible to us, and Orm are our great friends – so having them on the release is very meaningful for us as a band. And both jespers rock vox, and Orms Black metal eeriness adds to the the wide array of sounds on Colossal!
7/ You talk about having “reinvented” your style and sound. In concrete terms, how did that translate?
the style has been broadened tremendously, but without leaving the traditional roots in death metal behind. We’re bringing in all of our personal inspirations, and we think it makes for a complex and exciting record!
8/You played some of the new tracks live even before the album was released. Did the audience’s feedback influence the final version?
The reactions did for sure influence the songs, that was why we wanted to play them before the recordings. Lasse read, somewhere, that carcass had played all of heartwork before recording in, and thus it was decided..
9/The artwork for Colossal was created by Solomacello. What was your artistic vision behind the cover?
the vision was to try and marry Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest and something beastly. Solomacello hit it right in the spot!!
10/ What are your plans for the long and short term in your career?
– the plan is to tour, tour, tour, and tour some more. We are a live band, and live for that interaction.
11/ Which artists/bands can we find on your current playlists, and which ones would you recommend to our readers?
at the moment: dying Fetus; The Halo Effect, Bolt Thrower, Megadeth, Dissection. A big recommendation would be the latest Dying Fetus, Make Them Beg For Death
