[English version below] Si vous êtes fan de Metal japonais alors vous avez peut être suivie toute l’histoire : Knosis sort enfin son premier album ! Né de la volonté de l’ancien front-man de Crystal Lake, le chanteur et multi-instrumentiste Ryō Kinoshita, le groupe annonçait de manière très énigmatique sa création courant 2022 sur Instagram avec une phrase accrocheuse « Know that you don’t know me » (et ce quelques mois seulement après le départ de Ryō de son ancien projet, lequel avait fait pas mal de bruit dans la sphère Metal !). Nous avions la chance de voir le groupe se présenter en France en 2023 en première partie de Stray From The Path, ils n’avaient alors à leur actif que quelques singles lesquels portaient déjà une identité assez forte. C’est en septembre 2024 que le groupe annonce enfin avoir signé chez Sharptone Records, biais par lequel l’album GENKNOSIS est sorti ce 1er août. Un album que nous avons beaucoup attendu ! Aors qu’en est-il ?
GENKNOSIS commence par une sorte d’introduction au nom éponyme pour un album qui promet d’être court et concis : 29 minutes en seulement dix titres. Celle-ci ouvre le bal en beauté et annonce clairement la couleur : du Metal hybride, bourré d’influences diverses et variées, une identité forte et marquée, en venant donc avec le fameux « You know nothing about me » !
Si vous avez suivi l’évolution de Knosis vous allez vite retomber sur vos pattes : tout les singles sont présents ici. SHINMON et son beat down efficace et ses guitares dissonantes suit juste derrière, un titre à l’énergie folle et qui est très énergique grâce au chant de son leader, on serait presque tenté de dire qu’on y voit des influences très Hardcore voir même plus Deathcore au niveau du chant. Définir ce qu’est Knosis ne sera pas si simple : Metalcore, Industriel, plus ? Il s’agit en tout cas de Metal très moderne et il faut se pencher sur le sujet pour le comprendre. FUHAI poursuit, plus grave et plus gras, au chant on retrouve du japonais en plus de l’anglais. On retrouve Yukina, chanteuse de HANABIE en feat sur ce morceau, la voix féminine apporte ici un vent de fraîcheur ! Le breakdown est particulièrement efficace, un de ceux qui vous donne totalement envie d’être vécu en live ! Vivement une nouvelle annonce de tournée, donc !
YAKUSAI nous embarque bel et bien vers du Metalcore et plaira aux nostalgiques de l’ancien Crystal Lake. L’identité est toujours aussi forte, on y apprécie le savoir-faire de la formation : on ressent bel et bien une liberté de création, cette volonté de tenter toutes sortes de choses avec un projet qui tient à coeur. Nous voici déjà à mi-chemin de cet album et SEISAI qui avait été un immense coup de coeur pour nous est placé à cet endroit. Le titre, sorti en single en janvier 2023 marquait les prémices de Knosis et était carrément prometteur. On se retrouve encore et toujours emporté par le rythme effréné du morceau et son aspect hybride : passages très Hardcore aux riffs très gras entrecoupés de moments très électroniques et mélodiques avec, même, de la voix claire ! KURUIBI qui suit, était sorti en mars 2023, on retrouve donc un peu l’âme vibe, placer les deux morceaux l’un après l’autre fait carrément sens pour nous.
IMIONI nous propose quelque chose de bien plus lent et avec un flow très différent : le chant est presque rappé ? Et semble être assez retouché, pourquoi pas ? On pense presque à du Trap/Rap Metal tel que Scarlxrd ou Corpse ! L’ambiance sombre de ce titre qu’on ne connaissait pas nous embarque et nous séduit, cela plaira sûrement aux amateurs du genre. À noter que le titre est malgré tout très Metal et monte en intensité au fur et à mesure qu’il avance. Les paroles sont quant à elles très répétitives et embarqueront à coup sûr les foules en live ! DOKUNUMA est un titre beaucoup plus chill et emprunt de nostalgie, un morceau de type feel good, avec des riffs un peu Rock et du vocodeur. C’est aussi l’un des titres les plus longs de cet album. Cette fois-ci on y retrouve des influences assez différentes : on peut penser à du Rock et du Rap japonais (oui les deux) ou encore à du Grunge-Gaze au niveau instrumental. C’est un grand oui et un immense coup de coeur !
TANEBI se veut plus énergique mais est carrément dans la continuité de DOKUNUMA. On y retrouve le timbre particulier de Ryō sans vocodeur, on ne peut qu’être séduit si on a apprécié le titre précédent. L’enchaînement des deux est super cohérent, une bonne manière d’arriver à la fin de l’album ! ANGETSU sera le dernier titre de GENKNOSIS ( et on retrouve encore le « You’ll never know » ). C’est sans aucun doute le morceau le plus tranquille de l’album : beaucoup de reverb au niveau du chant créant presque une sensation d’apaisement, de tranquillité et surtout de nostalgie. Si vous aimez ce genre de titre qui boucle le tout de façon magistrale et poétique pour fermer un album alors vous serez servi ! On a particulièrement aimé le passage sans instrument vers la fin du morceau avec seulement la voix du leader du projet. Les paroles, quant à elles, sont très poignantes et abordent le sujet de la santé mentale avec force et personnalité.
Alors que dire ?
L’album est court et concis mais ne laisse pas sur sa faim. Il est complet, bourré d’influences diverses et comporte beaucoup de savoir-faire et de maîtrise dans sa structure et ses ambitions. Knosis et Ryō Kinoshita montrent qu’ils ont déjà du vécu dans la scène musicale et proposent quelque chose de nouveau, de différent, de presque inclassable : on serai presque tenté de donner un genre différent au groupe en fonction des morceaux… Cela pourrait perdre une partie des auditeurs voir même les fans de Crystal Lake espérant retrouver le front-man tel qu’ils l’ont connu… Mais cela nous a convaincu et nous avons qu’une seule envie : revoir Knosis en live avec tout les titres de cet album qui est un véritable coup de coeur.

[ENGLISH VERSION] If you’re a fan of Japanese metal, you may have followed the whole story: Knosis is finally releasing their debut album! Born from the will of former Crystal Lake frontman and multi-instrumentalist Ryō Kinoshita, the band very enigmatically announced its formation in 2022 on Instagram with the catchy phrase « Know that you don’t know me » (and this just a few months after Ryō‘s departure from his former project, which had caused quite a stir in the metal world!). We were lucky enough to see the band perform in France in 2023 as the opening act for Stray From The Path, at which point they only had a few singles to their credit, which already had a fairly strong identity. It was in September 2024 that the band finally announced they had signed with Sharptone Records, through which the album GENKNOSIS was released on August 1st. An album we’ve been eagerly awaiting! So what’s the latest?
GENKNOSIS begins with a sort of eponymous introduction for an album that promises to be short and concise: 29 minutes in only ten tracks. This one opens the ball beautifully and clearly sets the tone: hybrid metal, full of diverse and varied influences, a strong and marked identity, thus coming with the famous « You know nothing about me« !
If you’ve followed the evolution of Knosis, you’ll quickly get back on your feet: all the singles are present here. SHINMON and its effective downbeat and dissonant guitars follow right behind, a track with crazy energy and which is very energetic thanks to the vocals of its leader. We’d almost be tempted to say that we see very hardcore influences, even more deathcore in the vocals. Defining what Knosis is won’t be so simple: metalcore, industrial, more? In any case, it’s very modern metal and you have to look into the subject to understand it.
FUHAI continues, deeper and fatter, with Japanese vocals in addition to English. We find Yukina, singer of HANABIE, featured on this track; the female voice brings a breath of fresh air! The breakdown is particularly effective, one of those that makes you totally want to experience it live! Looking forward to a new tour announcement! YAKUSAI takes us firmly into metalcore and will please those nostalgic for the old Crystal Lake. The identity is still as strong as ever, and we appreciate the band’s expertise: we truly feel a creative freedom, this desire to try all sorts of things with a project that is close to our hearts.
We are already halfway through this album, and SEISAI, which was a huge favorite of ours, is placed there. The track, released as a single in January 2023, marked the beginnings of Knosis and was downright promising. We find ourselves swept away again and again by the track’s frenetic rhythm and its hybrid aspect: very hardcore passages with very fat riffs interspersed with very electronic and melodic moments, even with clean vocals! KURUIBI, which follows, was released in March 2023, so we find a bit of the soul vibe, placing the two tracks one after the other makes perfect sense to us.
IMIONI offers us something much slower and with a very different flow: the vocals are almost rapped? And seem to be quite retouched, why not? It almost reminds us of trap/rapmetal like Scarlxrd or Corpse! The dark atmosphere of this track, which we were not familiar with, carries us away and seduces us, it will surely please fans of the genre. Note that the track is nevertheless very metal and increases in intensity as it progresses. The lyrics, however, are very repetitive and will definitely carry the crowds live! DOKUNUMA is a much more chilled and nostalgic track, a feel-good track with slightly rock riffs and a vocoder. It’s also one of the longer tracks on this album. This time, we find quite different influences: we can think of Japanese rock and rap (yes, both) or even grunge-gaze on the instrumental level. It’s a resounding yes and a huge favorite!
TANEBI is more energetic but is definitely in line with DOKUNUMA. We find Ryō‘s distinctive timbre without the vocoder, and we can’t help but be seduced if we enjoyed the previous track. The sequence of the two is super coherent, a good way to reach the end of the album! ANGETSU will be the last track on GENKNOSIS (and we hear « You’ll never know » again). This is without a doubt the most peaceful track on the album: a lot of reverb in the vocals creating almost a feeling of appeasement, tranquility and especially nostalgia. If you like this kind of track that loops everything in a masterful and poetic way to close an album then you will be served! We particularly liked the passage without instruments towards the end of the track with only the voice of the leader of the project.The lyrics, meanwhile, are very poignant and address the subject of mental health with strength and personality.
So what can I say?
The album is short and concise, but leaves nothing to be desired. It’s complete, full of diverse influences, and displays a great deal of skill and mastery in its structure and ambitions. Knosis and Ryō Kinoshita demonstrate their experience in the music scene and offer something new, different, and almost unclassifiable: one might be tempted to assign a different genre to the band depending on the songs… This could turn off some listeners, perhaps even Crystal Lake fans hoping to rediscover the frontman as they knew him… But it convinced us, and we have only one desire: to see Knosis live again with all the tracks from this album, which is a real favorite.
