[ENGLISH BELOW] Cela faisait longtemps que les américains de Knocked Loose n’avaient pas produit un album, c’est dire A Different Shade Of Blue, le dernier en date, était sorti en 2019. Pourtant le groupe de Beatdown Hardcore était bel et bien actif en témoigne la dernière tournée européenne de cette année (dont une date à l’Élysée Montmartre le 15 février dernier). L’année dernière ils avaient également frappé fort avec la sortie de leur EP qui comportaient des titres énergiques tel que Everything is Quiet now ou encore Deep on the willow. Alors que nous réservait cette nouvelle sortie intitulée You won’t go before you’re supposed to ?
Thirst ouvre le bal aux sons de bols tibétains, comme une sorte d’intro en douceur non sans rappeler le caractère religieux de la cover de l’album, une croix immense faite de néon lumineux et devant laquelle se trouve une personne au loin. Cette accalmie sera de courte durée puisqu’elle est rapidement coupée par le son très violent de Knocked Loose qui, dès le premier morceau, promet un album haut en couleurs. On retrouve cette énergie propre au groupe avec ses riffs gras et sa basse très présente évidement accompagnée du scream très aiguë et particulier de Bryan Garris. Thirst se termine par un breakdown qui met en avant la batterie et ouvre sur le son suivant Piece by piece. Ce dernier titre nous offre toute la puissance du beatdown hardcore de Knocked Loose avec un « piece by piece » chanté en fond avec un voix grave et qui détonne avec le timbre aiguë du vocaliste. Le breakdown super low du son donne très clairement l’impression d’avoir été écrit pour être vécu en live.
S’ensuit Suffocate en feat avec la chanteuse Poppy. Et si on s’attendait à des sonorités plus Pop, que nenni, elle se prend au jeu et scream avec Bryan. Une prestation pour le moins inattendue et absolument jouissive. Sa voix claire avant le « Suffocate » ajoute de la profondeur au morceau qui prend juste après un tournant reggaeton pour son breakdown. Décidément Knocked Loose nous montre qu’ils ont toujours des choses nouvelles à présenter !
Don’t reach for me qui était également sorti en single il y a quelques temps se lance derrière. Si on avait déjà été conquis par son côté lourd il y a quelques temps, il suit parfaitement bien derrière Suffocate. En tout point les sons de l’album semblent s’enchaîner avec une logique folle, si bien que le tout s’écoute sans que l’on sente le temps passer ! Mais surtout Don’t reach for me nous séduit par tout son passage only basse, un plaisir quand on aime ce genre de sonorité bien low et qui propose un répits de quelques secondes pour repartir sur un son bien plus énervé derrière : Moss Cover All (ou clairement 46 secondes de violence pure). Take me home commence avec un riff répétitif à la guitare, repris avec la basse en plus, coupée pour seulement de la batterie, puis il reprend… Ect
La structure du morceau est assez progressive et assez inattendue, très sympa à analyser et appréciable à l’écoute, sûrement un de nos morceaux préférés dès lors notre première écoute. Il finit sur une petite musique qui rappelle les années folles et qui dénote une fois de plus dans cet album décidément plein de rebondissements.
C’est Slaughterhouse 2 qui suit, évidemment en feat Chris de Motionless in White. Et quelle claque ! Le morceau reprend une partie des paroles (ce fameux « You won’t survivre in this slaughterhouse » par exemple) mais est complément différent du premier opus que l’on retrouvais dans Scoring the end of the world. Alors que dans l’album de Motionless in White on avait un breakdown à la Knocked Loose avec un chorus très Metalcore , cette fois-ci adieu le chant clair et bonjour au scream explosif ! The calm that keeps you awake se lance derrière. Placé après Slaughterhouse 2 le son paraît plus « calme » comme son nom l’indique… Encore que. Certes la guitare et la basse sont grasses et lentes, la chanson possède une ambiance lourde et entraînante et comporte des sons de percussions assez particuliers et originaux mais l’ensemble reste énergique !
Une petite accalmie de quelques secondes pendant laquelle on peut entendre des chants d’oiseaux lointain et on arrive au mastodonte Blinding Faith ou « la croyance aveugle ». Un titre qui rappelle encore la thématique claire et nette de l’album. Un single qui était aussi sorti il y a quelques temps et qui tournait depuis lors en boucle dans la playlist ! Un son qui regroupe la quintessence de Knocked Loose : screamo aiguë et tempo lent, cette violente énergie bien à eux, des riffs qui restent en tête et un breakdown abyssal. Sit and mourn viens finir l’album en beauté et commence avec un son d’ambiance coupé par quelques riff violents. Une recette qui, en finalité, marche bien à chaque fois. On y entends enfin le fameux You won’t go before you’re supposed to du titre de l’album et cela sonne comme une sorte de conclusion finale.
De cet album court (27 minutes !) et de ces dix nouveaux titres, que retenir finalement ?
Que Knocked Loose a toujours de nouvelles choses à nous proposer, c’est sûr et certain. Les américains ont toujours de la suite dans les idées et renouvellent leur production tout en restant fidèles à l’essence même de leur discographie plus ancienne, comme une sorte de suite logique. Le groupe nous présente de nouveaux titres que l’on a hâte de vivre en live, des morceaux qui pour certains ont déjà pris place dans notre playlist. Un gros coup de coeur pour Suffocate, Take me home et cette suite énervée de Slaughterhouse de notre côté.

[ENGLISH VERSION] It’s been a long time since the Americans from Knocked Loose had produced an album. Indeed A different shade of Blue, the latest, was released in 2019.
However, the hardcore beatdown group was indeed active, as evidenced by the last European tour this year (including a date at the Élysée Montmartre on February 15th).
Last year they also hit hard with the release of their EP which included energetic tracks such as Everything is Quiet now and Deep in the willow. So what does this new release entitled You won’t go before you’re supposed to have in store for us?
Thirst opens the ball with the sounds of Tibetan bowls, like a kind of gentle intro reminiscent of the religious nature of the album cover, an immense cross made of luminous neons . This calm will be short-lived since it’s quickly cut off by the very violent sound of Knocked Loose which, from the first track, promises a colorful album. We find this energy specific to the group with its bold riffs and its very present bass obviously accompanied by the very high and particular scream of Bryan Garris. Thirst ends with a breakdown which highlights the drums and opens with the following sound Piece by piece.
This last title offers us all the power of the hardcore beatdown of Knocked Loose with a « piece by piece » sung in the background with a deep voice and which clashes with the high timbre of the vocalist. The super low breakdown of the sound very clearly gives the impression of having been written to be experienced live.
Suffocate follows as a feat with the singer Poppy. And if we were expecting more pop sounds, no, she gets into the game and screams with Bryan. An unexpected and absolutely enjoyable performance to say the least. Her clear voice before Suffocate adds depth to the song which just takes a reggaeton turn for its breakdown. Knocked Loose definitely shows us that they always have new things to share !
Don’t reach for me which was also released as a single some time ago is launched behind. If we had already been won over by its heavy side some time ago, it follows perfectly well behind Suffocate. In every way the sounds of the album seem to follow one another with a crazy logic, so much so that the whole thing can be listened to without us feeling the time passing! But above all Don’t reach for me seduces us with its entire bass only passage, a pleasure when you like this kind of very low sound and which offers a respite of a few seconds to start again with a much more angry sound behind: Moss Cover All (or clearly 46 seconds of pure violence). Take me home begins with a repetitive riff on the guitar, repeated with the bass added, cut for only drums, then it resumes… Ect The structure of the piece is quite progressive and quite unexpected, very nice to analyze and enjoyable to listen to, surely one of our favorite pieces from our first listen. It ends with a little music which recalls the Roaring Twenties and which once again denotes in this album decidedly full of twists and turns.
Slaughterhouse 2 follows, obviously featuring Chris from Motionless in White. And what a slap! The song uses part of the lyrics (the famous « You won’t survive in this slaughterhouse » for example) but is completely different from the first opus that we found in Scoring the end of the world. While in the Motionless in White album we had a Knocked Loose breakdown with a very metalcore chorus, this time goodbye to clean vocals and hello to explosive scream! The calm that keeps you awake starts behind. Placed after Slaughterhouse 2 the sound seems more « calm » as its name suggests… Although. Certainly the guitar and bass are fat and slow, the song has a heavy and catchy atmosphere and includes quite particular and original percussion sounds but the whole remains energetic!
A small calm of a few seconds during which we can hear distant bird songs and we arrive at Blinding Faith. A title which still recalls the theme of the album. A single which was also released some time ago and which has been playing on repeat in the playlist ever since! A sound that brings together the quintessence of Knocked Loose: high screamo and slow tempo, this violent energy of their own, riffs that stay in your head and an abysmal breakdown. Sit and Moun ends the album in style and begins with an ambient sound cut by some violent riffs. A recipe that ultimately works well every time. We finally hear the famous « You won’t go before you’re supposed to » from the album’s title and it sounds like a sort of final conclusion.
From this short album (27 minutes!) and these ten new tracks, what can we ultimately remember?
That Knocked Loose always has new things to offer us, that’s for sure. The Americans always follow through on their ideas and renew their production while remaining faithful to the very essence of their older discography, like a sort of logical continuation. The group presents us with new tracks that we can’t wait to experience live, pieces which for some have already taken their place in our playlist. A big favorite for Suffocate, Take me home and this angry sequel to Slaughterhouse on our side.
