Pour la sortie de leur album Viribus Untis nous avons eu l’occasion de poser quelques questions à Siegfried Samer, chanteur du groupe Dragony.

1.Peux-tu commencer par présenter le groupe s’il te plait ?
Dragony est un groupe de symphonique power métal originaire d’Autriche fondé en 2007 sous un différent nom The Dragonslayer Project. Après avoir enregistrer notre premier album Legends, nous avons signé avec le label allemand Limb Music et avons sortis trois autres albums et un EP jusque là. Viribus Unitis est notre quatrième album et le premier avec Naplam Records . Je pourrais te décrire le style du groupe comme étant du power métal classique dans le style des groupes de fin des années 90 et début des années 2000 avec lesquels on a grandi comme Hammerfall, Edguy, Avantasia, Kamelot ou Gamma Ray.
2. Qu’est-ce que ça fait de signé chez Napalm Records ?
C’est un très un bon sentiment, bien sûr! Napalm Records est définitivement l’un des plus grand label de métal au monde aujourd’hui et en plus ils sont basés en Autriche, donc on a la sensation de rentrer à la maison au moment pour nous de signer avec eux à l’été 2020. Nous sommes vraiment excités par toutes les possibilités de cette nouvelle coopération !
3. Quelle est l’idée principale de cette album ?
Viribus Unitis est un album concept qui s’inspire de la lignée alternative de l’ère des derniers empereurs d’Habsbourg d’Autriche en place entre 1867 et 1918 a peu près. C’est une version Steampunk Fantasy des évènements de la première guerre mondial avec des figures historiques comme Franz Joseph I, Impératrice Elisabeth (connu sous le nom de Sisi) et leur fils Archduke Rudolf, leur nouveau et différent rôle dans la vie. Par exemple Franz Joseph est dévié en Cyberpunk Joseph après être placé dans une armure mécanique dessinée par Nikola Tesla, et l’Impératrice Elisabeth est revenue d’entre les morts possédé par un démon après l’échec d’un rituel de magie noir exécuter par Rudolf. 4. Quel est votre processus d’écriture de chanson ?
En règle général l’un de nous arrive avec une base musical ou un fil rouge conducteur pour l’album, par exemple un chœurs avec un air et des enchainements d’accords. Ensuite nous allons au studio où notre producteur Frank Pitters travaille sur toute la structure et les arrangements de la chanson. Enfin nous écrivons les paroles. C’est un processus plutôt standard !
5. Pourquoi avoir choisi Le beau Danube Bleu pour commencer votre album ?
Et bien, vu que l’histoire de l’album se passe en Autriche en 1867, nous voulions utiliser une vraie pièce musicale « Autrichienne » comme intro. Et qu’est-ce qu’il y a de plus autrichien que le beau Danube bleu ? Aussi, ça colle assez bien avec la chronologie puisque cette pièce à été performé pour la première fois en 1867 – la même année que le conflit autrichien – hongrois ce qui est notre point de départ du thème de l’album avec Gods of War.
6. Pourquoi avoir choisi une chanson entièrement en autrichien pour finir l’album ?
La dernière chanson est une chanson bonus, et pas liée directement à l’histoire de l’album. C’est une cover d’une chanson populaire écrite par l’un des chanteurs – compositeurs autrichien les plus connus Rainhard Fendrich . Et cela permet de faire du tourisme à Vienne et quel expérience spéciale que de voir Vienne dans la nuit (nom de la chanson) et on trouvait que ça collait bien avec l’album.
7. Quel est ta première influence musicale ?
Personnellement je dirai Hammerfall et Edguy / Avantasia . Hammerfall a été le premier « vrai » groupe de métal/power métal que j’ai découvert et en termes d’écriture, je suis un grand fan de Tobias Sammet !
8. Comment as-tu travaillé avec la pandémie de 2020 ?
En tant que groupe pas beaucoup ! Rires . Je veux dire ce n’était trop dur pour nous pour être honnête, parce que nous avons tous du travail à l’extérieur et nous ne sommes pas des musiciens à temps complet. Nous étions essentiellement occupé à faire Viribus Unitis ! Donc pour nous la pandémie n’a pas été très dur même si on aurait aimé faire quelques concerts mais malheureusement ça n’a pas pu se produire. Nous devions faire une petite tournée avec Twillight Force en avril, ce qui aurait été génial ! Mais avec un peu de chance on pourra le faire bientôt !
9. Qui a dessiné le visuel de la pochette ? Peux-tu nous parler de ce qu’il représente ?
La pochette a été faite encore une fois par Dusan Markovic de Serbie. Nous avons déjà travailler avec lui sur nos albums passés Lords of the hunt et Masters of the multiverse et on pense que son style colle bien à la musique – c’est très détaillé mais aussi très fantastique et ça correspond bien a notre style inspiration fantasy power métal.
10. Qu’est-ce que tu dirais à quelqu’un qui ne connait pas Dragony pour lui faire découvrir ?
Regarde nos vidéos Gods of War, If It Bleeds We Can Kill It et Lords of the hunt et tu aura une idée assez claire de ce qu’est l’humour et l’autodérision de Dragony .
11. Dans toute ta discographie, quelle chanson préfères-tu faire sur scène et pourquoi ?
C’est une question pas évidente ! Il y a quelques chanson préféré des fans qui seront toujours jouées sur scène mais je pense que ma préféré sera toujours Wolves of the North de l’album Shadowplay . C’est une chanson sur Game of Thrones et c’est notre premier gros titre – c’est toujours la chanson que l’on joue en dernier sur scène.

- 1. Can you start by introducing the band for us please ?
Dragony is a Symphonic Power Metal band from Austria, that was founded in 2007 under a different name as The Dragonslayer Project. After recording the first album Legends, we signed with German label Limb Music and have released 3 albums and one EP so far. Viribus Unitis is our fourth album, and the first one as part of our deal with Napalm Records . I guess you could describe our style as pretty classical Power Metal in the style of bands from the late 1990s and early 2000s that we grew up listening to, like Hammerfall, Edguy, Avantasia, Kamelot or Gamma Ray .
2. How it’s like to sign with Napalm Records ?
That’s a very good feeling, of course! Napalm are definitely one of the top metal labels in the world today, and with them also being based in Austria, it really felt like a “coming home” moment for us to sign with them in summer 2020. We are very excited about the possibilities of this new cooperation!
3. What’s the first ideology of this album ?
Viribus Unitis is a concept album based on an alternate timeline of the era of the last Habsburg emperors of Austria, set between 1867 and 1918, basically. It tells a “steampunk fantasy” version of the events leading up to WWI, and gives historical figures like emperor Franz Joseph I, empress Elisabeth (known as “Sisi”) and their son, Archduke Rudolf, new and very different roles than their real-life parts. Franz Joseph for example is turned into “Cyberpunk Joseph” after being placed in a mechanical armor designed by Nikola Tesla , and empress Elisabeth returns from the dead possessed by a demon after a failed dark magic ritual by Rudolf. 4. What’s your process to write songs ?
Usually one of us will come up with the basic idea and outline for the album, so for example a chorus with vocal melody and chord progression. Then we go to the studio of our producer, Frank Pitters , and work on the full song structure and arrangement with him there. Finally, I write the lyrics – that’s pretty much our standard process!
5.Why did you choose On the blue Danube to start the album ?
Well, since the concept album is set in Austria and our storyline starts in 1867, we wanted to use a truly “Austrian” piece of music as intro. And what is more Austrian than the “Blue Danube” waltz? Also, it is quite fitting chronologically, as this piece was performed for the first time in 1867 – the same year that the Austro-Hungarian Compromise took place, which is the starting point of our album and theme of the album opener Gods of War.
6. Why did you choose for the last song of the album to be in Austrian ?
The last song is a bonus track, and not directly part of the storyline. It’s a cover version of a popular song by one of Austria’s most famous singer-songwriters, Rainhard Fendrich . And since it also deals with the sights of Vienna, and what kind of special experience it is to see “ Vienna at night” (which is the title of the song), we thought it also quite fitting for the album!
7.What’s your first music influence ( Band name) ?
For me personally I would say Hammerfall and Edguy/Avantasia. Hammerfall was the first “True” Metal/Power Metal band I discovered, and in terms of songwriting, I am a huge fan of Tobias Sammet !
8.How did you work with the 2020 pandemic ?
As a band, not much! Haha… I mean, it was not too bad for us to be honest, as we all have our regular “day jobs” and are not full time musicians. Also, we were mostly still busy making Viribus Unitis! So for us the pandemic wasn’t too bad, even though we would have loved to play a few live shows too, which unfortunately did not happen – we were supposed to go on a short tour with Twilight Force in April, which would have been awesome! But hopefully we can make up for that soon!
9.Who designed the album visual ? Can you talk about what’s the representation?
The cover artwork was once again made by Dusan Markovic from Serbia! We already worked with him on our past releases Lords of the Hunt and Masters of the Multiverse, and we think his style really fits our sound – it is very detailed, but still also very fantastical which fits very well to our type of fantasy-inspired Power Metal.
10.What could you say to someone who doesn’t know Dragony to make them want to discover you?
Check out our Videos to Gods of War, If It Bleeds We Can Kill It and Lords of the Hunt – and you should pretty quickly get an idea about the sound and also humoristic, self-ironic aspect of Dragony!
11. In all your discography, which song is your favorite to perform and why ?
That’s a tough question! There’s a few fan favorites that are always awesome to play live, but I think my favorite would still have to be Wolves of the North from the Shadowplay album. It’s a song about Game of Thrones , and it was basically our first “big hit” song – it’s still the song we traditionally play last at our live shows.
