[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] Chaque album du groupe allemand Der Weg Einer Freiheit est particulièrement attendu et leur sixième album intitulé Innern (intérieur en allemand) ne déroge pas à la règle. Il est disponible depuis le 12 septembre dernier via Season Of Mist. Sur les six titres composant ce nouvel album, le groupe explore la psyché humaine.
L’album s’ouvre avec Marter qui commence avec une introduction relativement angoissante tandis que tout les instruments de la formation se rajoutent petit à petit pour « crever » cette ambiance et après deux minutes d’écoute on entend la batterie rouler et les rugissements des guitares vite rejoints par la voix de Nikita Kamprad toujours aussi intense et dure. Le morceau se transforme en quelque chose de plus envoûtant voir plus hypnotique sur une des dernières parties avant l’explosion finale. Le morceau renvoie aux racines mêmes du groupe et c’est un plaisir de les retrouver avec de nouveaux morceaux! Xibalba est le morceau le plus long sur Innern avec ses dix minutes, les cris du vocaliste viennent nous cueillir directement et nous coller quelques frissons au passage sur un titre introspectif qui nous invite à la réflexion sur nos modes de vie actuels. Le chant est très habité et puissant comme dans chacune des compositions du groupe mais à chaque fois on est presque surpris de cette intensité qui donne tout son charme à Der Weg Einer Freiheit. Puis à 6:34 c’est le calme après la tempête, le groupe nous transporte une nouvelle fois dans quelque chose d’évanescent qui ne semble pas vouloir durer très longtemps puisque les instruments du groupe vont vite rejoindre ce moment de quiétude.
Eos suit la continuité de la fin plus mélodique du titre précédent mais qui ne fera pas perdre son essence au morceau tout comme sur Fragment où on retrouve…du chant clair de la part du chanteur/guitariste, plutôt très étonnant mais tout aussi appréciable, on finit par se laisser porter avant que le morceau n’explose avec la batterie et les guitares nous replongeant dans le côté plus sombre de Der Weg Einer Freiheit. Finisterre III est un court interlude mélancolique au piano avant le morceau final Forlorn interprété en anglais alors que le reste de l’album reste en allemand. Après une intro planante, on retrouve le chant clair de Kamprad sur des riffs qui sont totalement étrangers à l’univers musical proposé habituellement par le groupe, mais le chaos de Der Weg Einer Freiheit n’est jamais bien loin et le chant hurlé revient nous frapper une ultime fois avant le retour du calme pour terminer Innern en beauté.
Ce nouvel album des allemands propose de nouvelles choses tout en gardant une certaine cohérence avec leurs précédents opus. Le groupe évolue tout simplement et offre toujours des morceaux impeccables qui nous donnent envie d’y replonger pour en saisir toutes les nuances. Un immanquable !

[ENGLISH VERSION] Every album by German band Der Weg Einer Freiheit is eagerly awaited, and their sixth album, entitled Innern (German for « inside »), is no exception. It has been available since 12 September via Season Of Mist. Across the six tracks that make up this new album, the band explores the human psyche.
The album opens with Marter, which begins with a relatively distressing introduction, while all the instruments gradually join in to break the mood. After two minutes, the drums kick in and the guitars roar, quickly joined by Nikita Kamprad‘s voice, which is as intense and harsh as ever. The track transforms into something more captivating, even hypnotic, in one of the last sections before the final explosion. The track harks back to the band’s roots, and it’s a pleasure to hear them again with new material! Xibalba is the longest track on Innern at ten minutes, the vocalist’s cries grab us immediately and give us a few chills along the way on an introspective track that invites us to reflect on our current lifestyles. The vocals are very intense and powerful, as in all of the band’s compositions, but each time we are almost surprised by this intensity, which gives Der Weg Einer Freiheit all its charm. Then at 6:34, it’s calm after the storm, and the band once again transports us into something evanescent that doesn’t seem to want to last very long, as the band’s instruments quickly join in this moment of tranquillity.
Eos follows on from the more melodic ending of the previous track, but without losing the essence of the song, just like on Fragment, where we find… clear vocals from the singer/guitarist, which is rather surprising but equally enjoyable. We end up getting carried away before the track explodes with drums and guitars plunging us back into the darker side of Der Weg Einer Freiheit. Finisterre III is a short melancholic piano interlude before the final track, Forlorn, performed in English, while the rest of the album remains in German. After a dreamy intro, we hear Kamprad‘s clear vocals over riffs that are completely foreign to the musical universe usually offered by the band, but the chaos of Der Weg Einer Freiheit is never far away and the screaming vocals return to hit us one last time before calm returns to end Innern on a high note.
This new album from the Germans offers something new while maintaining a certain consistency with their previous works. The band is simply evolving and still delivering impeccable tracks that make us want to dive back in to grasp all the nuances. A must-have!
