[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] Deftones s’apprête à sortir son dixième album studio, Private Music, demain (vendredi 22 août). Chaque album du groupe étant un événement, il était impensable de ne pas se pencher dessus surtout avec la sortie des deux singles my mind is a moutain et milk of the madonna.
Et c’est avec le premier single my mind is a mountain que Deftones va lancer les hostilités! Des riffs puissants et une rythmique explosive ouvrent ce titre avant que la voix éthérée de Chino Moreno ne les rejoignent mais le vocaliste arrivera tout de même à distiller quelques cris tout le long du morceau. Une très bonne entrée en matière qui nous fait renouer avec la musique du groupe comme il se doit. locked club continue sur cette belle lancée en se fondant totalement avec le titre précédent, Deftones utilise aussi un effet de réverb sur la voix de son chanteur qui donne vraiment très bien et ne semble pas choquant tout du moins pas ici, le morceau est intense autant au niveau instrumental que vocal prouvant que Deftones n’a pas lésiné sur son travail et s’apprête à nous proposer son meilleur album depuis au moins Diamond Eyes! D’ailleurs les morceaux sont relativement courts (à part deux) ce qui permet de ne pas perdre les auditeurs et c’est plutôt une très bonne chose. On continue avec ecdysis et son intro très sensuelle comme sait si bien les faire la formation, l’ecdysis est une mue chez les insectes et Deftones semble à nouveau muer même si private music conserve leur son Nu Metal, leur côté moderne permet une élévation qu’ils n’auraient sûrement pas connue à l’époque! Là encore, on ne peut d’ailleurs que saluer la performance vocale de Chino Moreno qui sera grandiose tout le long de l’album.
Le morceau se fond à nouveau pour donner infinite source qui rappelle les sonorités des années 2000, c’est doux mais tout en restant puissant émotionnellement parlant ce qui en fait un grand morceau sur lequel on se laisse porter sans difficulté par la voix du frontman. souvenir est un des deux morceaux les plus longs sur private music, mélangeant le Metal et le Shoegaze, un duo intéressant qui donne un côté presque surnaturel au titre notamment quand Chino élève sa voix sur des notes plus aigües. Le morceau semble s’arrêter brutalement à 4:30 mais des nappes de synthés apparaissent pour renforcer le côté surnaturel et éthéré pour continuer et se fondre avec cXz un morceau avec des influences plus Indus mais Metal quand même, on imagine sans peine Trent Reznor poser sa voix aux côtés de Moreno tant les similitudes avec NIN sont nombreuses. On se laisse porter par i think about you all the time avant l’arrivée du deuxième single milk of the madonna bien plus catchy qui nous permet de renouer avec le côté plus Metal de Deftones. cut hands revient sur le côté Neo-Metal du groupe avec le rap de Moreno mais aussi ses cris qu’on apprécie toujours autant entendre.
Il reste deux titres avant la fin de l’album et on aurait envie que ça ne s’arrête jamais… metal dream continue à évoluer sur un style Nu Metal avec une touche plus Indus comme sur cXz et un riff de guitare qui nous enlise dans l’ambiance de ce morceau. L’album se termine avec departing the body qui commence sur la fin du titre précédent, le début du morceau est doux tout comme la voix de Chino avant que les instruments ne se réveillent. Le chanteur nous prouve d’ailleurs sur cet énième titre qu’il maîtrise plusieurs styles de chant ce qui pourrait parfois nous faire penser que ce n’est pas lui qui interprète ce titre mais quelqu’un d’autre.
On retrouve dans private music, tout ce qui fait qu’on aime Deftones des morceaux axés Nu Metal mais aussi des moments plus sexy/sensuels avec la superbe voix de Chino Moreno. Ce nouvel album saura réconcilier la fan-base avec le groupe après Ohms ou encore Gore qui même si ils restent de très bons albums avaient moins plu!

[ENGLISH VERSION] Deftones are set to release their tenth studio album, Private Music, tomorrow (Friday 22 August). With each of the band’s albums being such a big deal, it was unthinkable not to take a closer look, especially with the release of the two singles My Mind Is a Mountain and Milk of the Madonna.
And it’s with the first single, My Mind Is a Mountain, that Deftones will kick things off! Powerful riffs and explosive rhythms open the track before Chino Moreno‘s ethereal voice joins in, but the vocalist still manages to distil a few screams throughout the song. It’s a very good introduction that reconnects us with the band’s music as it should be. Locked Club continues this momentum, blending seamlessly with the previous track. Deftones also uses a reverb effect on the singer’s voice, which works really well and doesn’t seem jarring, at least not here. The track is intense both instrumentally and vocally, proving that Deftones has not skimped on its work and is ready to offer us its best album since at least Diamond Eyes! What’s more, the tracks are relatively short (except for two), which means listeners don’t get lost, and that’s a very good thing. We continue with Ecdysis and its very sensual intro, which the band knows how to do so well. Ecdysis is a moulting process in insects, and Deftones seem to be moulting again, even if Private Music retains their Nu Metal sound. Their modern side allows for an elevation that they would surely not have experienced at the time! Once again, we can only applaud Chino Moreno‘s vocal performance, which is magnificent throughout the album.
The track blends into Infinite Source, which is reminiscent of the sounds of the 2000s. It’s soft but still emotionally powerful, making it a great track that carries you away with the frontman’s voice. Souvenir is one of the two longest tracks on Private Music, mixing metal and shoegaze, an interesting combination that gives the track an almost supernatural feel, especially when Chino raises his voice to higher notes. The track seems to stop abruptly at 4:30, but layers of synths appear to reinforce the supernatural and ethereal feel, continuing and blending into cXz, a track with more industrial influences but still metal. It’s easy to imagine Trent Reznor singing alongside Moreno, such are the similarities with NIN. We let ourselves be carried away by I Think About You All the Time before the arrival of the second single, Milk of the Madonna, which is much catchier and allows us to reconnect with the more metal side of Deftones. Cut Hands returns to the band’s neo-metal side with Moreno‘s rap but also his screams, which we always enjoy hearing.
There are two tracks left before the end of the album, and we wish it would never end… Metal Dream continues to evolve in a Nu Metal style with a more industrial touch, as on cXz, and a guitar riff that draws us into the atmosphere of the track. The album ends with Departing the Body, which begins at the end of the previous track. The beginning of the song is soft, as is Chino‘s voice, before the instruments wake up. The singer proves on this umpteenth track that he has mastered several singing styles, which could sometimes make us think that it’s not him singing this track but someone else.
Private Music has everything we love about Deftones: Nu Metal-oriented tracks, but also sexier/more sensual moments with Chino Moreno‘s superb voice. This new album will reconcile the fan base with the band after Ohms and Gore, which, although still very good albums, were less popular!
