A l’occasion de la sortie de leur nouvel album intitule Year Of The Snake, nous avons la chance de pouvoir poser quelques questions à Emlee la batteuse du groupe The Gems.

- Pouvez-vous nous présenter le groupe ?
Bien sûr, c’est Emlee qui répond aux questions, je suis la batteuse du groupe. Au chant, nous avons Guernica Mancini, et à la guitare et à la basse, Mona Lindgren. Pour les concerts, nous faisons appel à une musicienne de session à la basse ; en ce moment, c’est Mia Karlsson (Crucified Barbara) qui nous accompagne à la basse !
2. Votre nouvel album, Year Of The Snake, sortira bientôt. Dans quel état d’esprit étiez-vous lorsque vous l’avez créé ?
En fait, nous avons écrit des chansons que nous voulions ajouter à nos concerts. Il nous manquait des morceaux mid-tempo énergiques et des morceaux plus rapides, etc.
Ce fut un processus intéressant et je trouve que le résultat est vraiment réussi ! Nous avons souvent des idées différentes, mais nous finissons toujours toutes les chansons ensemble – c’est important pour nous que chacune puisse apporter sa touche à chaque morceau. C’est ce qui fait notre son !
3. Pourquoi avez-vous choisi le titre Year Of The Snake ?
Mona et moi sommes toutes les deux nées l’année du serpent, et nous avons aussi trouvé que ce thème collait très bien à cet album. L’année du serpent symbolise la renaissance et le renouveau, elle encourage les gens à embrasser le changement et à relever de nouveaux défis avec positivité. Et nous sommes définitivement entrées dans un nouveau chapitre de notre vie, laissant le passé derrière nous ; c’est un album très positif !
4. Y a-t-il des artistes, des films, des livres ou des événements qui ont inspiré certaines chansons ?
Nous puisons beaucoup d’inspiration dans des groupes comme Van Halen et Kiss, tant sur le plan musical que visuel. « Clout Chaser » est en fait un mélange de « Wannabe » des Spice Girls et de « Love It Loud » de Kiss…
5. Depuis la création de The Gems, comment pensez-vous que votre identité musicale a évolué ?
Nous avons eu la liberté d’utiliser toutes les influences que nous voulions, et ça a été génial. Nous mélangeons toutes sortes d’influences, puis nous les transformons d’une manière ou d’une autre en chansons de The Gems, haha. Nous avons clairement évolué vers les années 80 et 90 sur ce deuxième album… mais nous ne renoncerons jamais complètement au rock des années 70.
6. Y a-t-il eu des anecdotes drôles ou inattendues pendant l’enregistrement ?
L’enregistrement s’est étalé sur toute l’année : on a enregistré la batterie et les voix au Studio Bohus, près de Göteborg, puis les guitares et la basse au Nordic Soundlab, à Skara. C’est donc un peu un album à la Frankenstein, haha.
7. Quelles chansons de Year Of The Snake avez-vous le plus hâte de jouer en live ?
J’ai vraiment hâte de jouer les morceaux groovy en live, comme « Math ain’t mathing » et « Buckle up », et j’ai aussi hâte de jouer « Year of the Snake » – parce que c’est tout simplement très énergique et puissant !
8. Si vous deviez recommander un seul morceau de l’album à quelqu’un qui découvre le groupe pour la première fois, lequel choisiriez-vous ?
Ça dépend de ce que tu aimes. Si tu es fan de heavy metal ou de rock classique, je te recommanderais « Year of the Snake ». Si tu préfères le pop rock, je te recommanderais « Gravity ». Si tu aimes les morceaux groovy, je te recommanderais « Buckle up ».
Si tu as quelque chose à dire à tes fans français, le mot de la fin t’appartient !

To mark the release of their new album, Year Of The Snake, we had the chance to ask Emlee, the drummer for the band The Gems, a few questions.

- Can you introduce the band for us ?
Sure, this is Emlee answering the questions, I play drums in the band. On vocals we have Guernica Mancini and on guitar and bass Mona Lindgren. For live shows we have a hired gun on bass, at the moment we are bringing Mia Karlsson (Crucified Barbara) with us on bass!
2. Your new album Year Of The Snake is coming out soon. What was your state of mind when you were creating it?
We actually wrote songs that we wanted to add to our live shows, we were missing some mid tempo songs with high energy and some more fast songs, etc.
It was an interesting process and I think it turned our really good! We often come up with different ideas, but we always finish all the songs together – it’s important for us that everyone get’s to put their touch on every song. That is what makes us sound like we do!
3. Why did you choose the title Year Of The Snake?
Both me and Mona are born in the year of the snake, and we also thought that theme fitted really well with this album. The year of the snake symbolizes rebirth and renewal, encouraging people to embrace change and embark new challenges with positivity. And we definitely have stepped into a new chapter in life and left the past behind us, this is a very positive album!
4. Are there any artists, movies, books, or events that inspired certain songs ?
We take a lot of inspiration from bands like Van Halen and Kiss. Both musically and visually. ”Clout Chaser” is actually a mix of ”wannabe” with Spice Girls and ”Love it loud” with kiss…
5. Since the creation of The Gems, how do you feel your musical identity has evolved?
We have been free to use any influences we want and that has been great, we mix all kinds of influences and then somehow make it into Gem songs, haha. We have evolved more into the 80’s and 90’s on this second album for sure.. but we will never fully let go of the 70’s rock.
6. Was there any funny or unexpected anecdotes that happened during the recording?
The recording was spread out through the year, we recorded the drums and vocals in Studio Bohus outside of Gothenburg, and then Guitars and bass in Nordic Soundlab in Skara. So it’s a little Frankenstein of a record haha
7. Which songs from Year Of The Snake are you most looking forward to playing live?
I really look forward to play the groovy songs live, like ”Math ain’t mathing” and ”Buckle up”, I also look forward to ”Year of the Snake” – because it’s just very energetic and powerful!
8. If you had to recommend just one song from the album to someone discovering the band for the first time, which one would it be?
It depends on what you like, if you are into Heavy Metal/Classic Rock I would recommend ”Year of the Snake”. If you are more into Poprock I recommend ”Gravity”. If you like groovy stuff I recommend ”Buckle up”
