[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] Après Blackbraid I (2022), Blackbraid II (2023), Blackbraid a sorti la troisième partie tout simplement intitulée Blackbraid III le 8 août dernier en auto-production. Il est donc temps de se plonger dans le Black Metal mélancolique saupoudré de Folk et folklore indigène de ce superbe projet!
C’est avec une intro très mélodieuse à la guitare acoustique, Dusk (Eulogy) que Blackbraid ouvre ce nouveau chapitre. Un sentiment de mélancolie profonde se dégage de Dusk mais bien vite des riffs de guitares plus froids nous parviennent avant le premier véritable morceau Wardrums at Dawn On The Day Of My Death. Un morceau furieux profondément ancré dans la tradition Black Metal notamment avec ce chant déchiré (et déchirant) du vocaliste Sgah’gahsowáh qui nous envoie en balade dans des plaines enneigées mais pour une fois pas dans les pays nordiques même si la musique de Blackbraid semble très influencée par cette scène européenne même si un côté plus Blackened Death se détache de ce premier titre, le tout reste froid et dur propre au BM quand au solo de guitare il semble lui très inspiré…Thrash Metal! The Dying Breath Of A Sacred Stag garde des moments intenses et viscéraux tout en explorant un côté peut-être plus mélodique de Blackbraid même si les blast beats ne sont encore une fois pas laissés de côté. The Earth Is Weeping commence avec le crépitement d’un feu et une guitare sèche, on peut aussi distinguer les cris d’un loup, ce morceau pourrait être la parfaite musique pour illustrer une scène de feu de camp dans une série ou dans un film Western. Un morceau purement instrumental qui travaille sur l’atmosphère et l’ambiance ressentie plutôt que sur la brutalité du genre musical exploité par Blackbraid. Les grognements presque comme ceux d’un animal sauvage du leader reviennent vite sur God of Black Blood, un morceau trivial, mid-tempo et extrême qu’on pourrait comparer à quelque chose qu’aurait pu sortir Satyricon il y’a quelques années, en bref ça ne pourra que plaire (et ici ça nous plaît beaucoup). On peut également noter sur ce morceau l’apparition de la flûte amérindienne qui donne un côté un peu Folk à ce titre.
La nuit tombe et on peut entendre ses bruits à travers Traversing The Forest Of Eternal Dusk, sa guitare mais également le retour de la flûte amérindienne qui nous transporte complètement avant l’apparition de quelques riffs plus électriques, là encore Blackbraid propose un morceau instrumental qui prouve que leur travail sur les ambiance est exécuté à la perfection. Ces moments parsèment l’album et permettent aux auditeurs de reprendre leur souffle dans toute la noirceur et la violence infligée sur le reste de ce troisième opus. Tears Of The Dawn et ses changements de tempo qui intensifient son côté mystérieux voir mystique est un des plus deux plus longs morceaux de l’album, il peut être considéré comme grandiloquent et majestueux et c’est exactement l’impression qu’on en garde à la fin de l’écoute. Like Wind Through The Reeds Making Waves Like Water est le dernier intermède instrumental sur Blackbraid III et il est d’une pureté et d’une très belle musicalité avant And He Became The Burning Stars… qui est lui le morceau le plus long de l’album et il reste dans la continuité de Tears Of The Dawn. Le dernier morceau n’est autre qu’une cover du groupe Lord Belial, Fleshbound! On pourrait presque considérer cette reprise comme un bonus intéressant, Blackbraid se réapproprie parfaitement ce titre mais il ressemble plus à quelque chose de léger et divertissant par rapport aux propres compositions de Sgah’gahsowáh.
Blackbraid dévoile son troisième opus dans la parfaite continuité des deux autres. Ce Blackbraid III est une grande oeuvre, majestueuse qui rend hommage autant aux origines du genre Black Metal qu’au Folklore amérindien ou tout simplement à la nature. Un album puissant et d’une grande beauté!

[ENGLISH VERSION] Following Blackbraid I (2022) and Blackbraid II (2023), Blackbraid released the third installment, simply titled Blackbraid III, on August 8th as a self-produced album. It’s time to dive into the melancholic black metal sprinkled with folk and indigenous folklore of this superb project!
Blackbraid opens this new chapter with a very melodious acoustic guitar intro, Dusk (Eulogy). A feeling of deep melancholy emanates from Dusk, but soon colder guitar riffs reach us before the first real track, Wardrums at Dawn On The Day Of My Death. It’s a furious track deeply rooted in the Black Metal tradition, particularly with the torn (and heart-wrenching) vocals of Sgah’gahsowáh, which take us on a journey through snowy plains, but for once not in the Nordic countries, even though Blackbraid‘s music seems heavily influenced by this European scene, although a more Blackened Death side stands out in this first track. The whole thing remains cold and harsh, typical of BM, while the guitar solo seems very inspired… by thrash metal! The Dying Breath Of A Sacred Stag retains intense and visceral moments while exploring a perhaps more melodic side of Blackbraid, even if the blast beats are once again not left out. The Earth Is Weeping begins with the crackling of a fire and an acoustic guitar, and we can also hear the cries of a wolf. This track could be the perfect music to illustrate a campfire scene in a Western series or film. It is a purely instrumental track that focuses on the atmosphere and mood rather than the brutality of the musical genre exploited by Blackbraid. The leader’s growls, almost like those of a wild animal, quickly return on God of Black Blood, a trivial, mid-tempo, extreme track that could be compared to something Satyricon might have released a few years ago. In short, it’s bound to please (and here, we like it a lot). Also noteworthy on this track is the appearance of the Native American flute, which gives it a slightly folk feel.
Night falls and we can hear its sounds throughout Traversing The Forest Of Eternal Dusk, with his guitar but also the return of the Native American flute, which completely transports us before the appearance of some more electric riffs. Once again, Blackbraid offers an instrumental track that proves that their work on the atmosphere is executed to perfection. These moments are scattered throughout the album and allow listeners to catch their breath amid all the darkness and violence inflicted on the rest of this third opus. Tears Of The Dawn, with its tempo changes that intensify its mysterious, even mystical side, is one of the two longest tracks on the album. It can be considered grandiloquent and majestic, and that is exactly the impression we are left with at the end of the listen. Like Wind Through The Reeds Making Waves Like Water is the last instrumental interlude on Blackbraid III and is pure and beautifully musical before And He Became The Burning Stars… which is the longest track on the album and follows on from Tears Of The Dawn. The last track is none other than a cover of Lord Belial‘s Fleshbound! This cover could almost be considered an interesting bonus track, as Blackbraid perfectly reappropriates the song, but it feels more lighthearted and entertaining compared to Sgah’gahsowáh‘s own compositions.
Blackbraid unveils its third opus in perfect continuity with the other two. This Blackbraid III is a great, majestic work that pays homage as much to the origins of the Black Metal genre as to Native American folklore or simply to nature. A powerful and beautiful album!
