[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] Après Join The Club sorti en 2023, le groupe As December Falls s’apprête à révéler au monde son quatrième album studio intitulé Everything’s On Fire But I’m Fine qui sera disponible ce vendredi 15 août en auto-production et distribué par Virgin Music Group.
L’album s’ouvre avec l’introduction Burn It All Down où on peut retrouver la voix de Bethany (chant) avant le premier titre qui n’est autre que le morceau qui donne son nom à l’album, Everything’s On Fire But I’m Fine! Nous sommes accueillis directement par la basse puis la voix de la chanteuse va retentir suivie par la batterie et le reste des instruments, c’est catchy et le refrain va amener la touche de Pop-Punk nécessaire à faire bouger le tout. Ce morceau évoque la situation mondiale actuelle (ou tout simplement une période dangereuse et déprimante si on veut l’analyser d’un point de vue personnel) en gros « Je vais bien mais tout part en fumée ». Ready Set Go est une chanson plus sombre mais également plus lente, inspirée par la cité souterraine de la série Arcane! Le groupe étant fan de League Of Legends et Bethany étant aussi régulièrement en live sur Twitch pour son autre passion, les jeux vidéos, cette inspiration est assez logique. On peut aussi noter que les parties de guitares sont plus intéressantes ici avec notamment l’apparition d’un très court solo. On continue avec un autre single à savoir Therapy qui va continuer dans les morceaux énergiques avec notamment une partie de guitares plus Heavy , un morceau vraiment cool sur lequel la chanteuse évoque à quel point écrire des chansons est presque thérapeutique pour elle même si au final elle écrit souvent sur des sentiments négatifs. For The Plot est également déjà bien connue, on retrouve parfois des influences presque directes à Paramore (enfin l’ancien Paramore et en espérant que ADF ne deviennent JAMAIS ce qu’ils sont à l’heure actuelle), ce morceau reste très catchy et aborde les trahisons dans les relations amoureuses et les vengeances parfaites (ou presque). Une chanson que Bethany a écrite suite à une expérience chaotique de sa meilleure amie comme une forme d’hymne à l’amour de son ex.
Les morceaux sont très courts et s’enchaînent parfaitement on continue donc avec Fall Apart, plus rapide et plus Heavy que les compositions précédentes il sera à coup sûr une valeur sûre du groupe en live! Rewrite ralentit considérablement le rythme, on pourrait considérer ce très court morceau comme une ballade, elle marque également la fin de la première moitié de l’album tout en abordant le fait d’être grateful d’avoir vécu un moment difficile mais de s’en sortir plus fort. Bathroom Floor parle une fois de plus des mauvaises relations amoureuses (rencontrer la « mauvaise » personne, s’en rendre compte, tourner la page et avec les relations suivantes savoir reconnaître les Red Flags), le refrain est puissant et sera sûrement repris en choeur lors des lives du groupe.
Angry Cry sera un autre moment fort de ce nouvel album, alors que là où on pensait que I’m No Good Alone allait ralentir la cadence avec sa thématique évoquant la perte d’un être cher mais également le processus de deuil c’est uniquement sur les refrains qu’on peut se laisser porter avant que le refrain ne finisse par exploser et ne démontre la puissance vocale de Bethany. Quand on écoute Grim Reaper la première fois, on pense que ce côté catchy et joyeux évoque quelque chose de positif certes au niveau du bridge c’est le cas mais sinon tout le reste du morceau évoque la thématique des pensées suicidaires que la chanteuse et parolière a personnifiées comme étant la Grande Faucheuse. Sometimes I Hurt My Own Feelings a un rythme soutenu et des riffs de guitares plus Metal en arrière-plan. Ce titre évoque le fait de trop penser et souvent d’envisager des scénarios catastrophiques qui heureusement n’arriveront jamais. L’album se conclut avec This Isn’t Us un morceau apparemment très personnel pour la chanteuse qui semble évoquer la fin d’une histoire d’amour un peu comme un fil rouge sur Everything’s On Fire But I’m Fine, le morceau termine parfaitement ce nouvel opus, après tout on aime écouter une ballade qui permet de se poser une dernière fois et c’est ici le cas!
As December Falls propose ici un vrai bon album de Pop-Punk avec des touches plus Emo ou encore Metal (notamment avec les guitares). On ne saura que trop le recommander aux fans de l’ancien Paramore ou encore de Avril Lavigne (à une certaine période) et nous il nous tarde de découvrir le groupe en live lors de leur passage à Paris le 11 octobre prochain.

[ENGLISH VERSION] Following the release of Join The Club in 2023, the band As December Falls is set to unveil its fourth studio album, Everything’s On Fire But I’m Fine, which will be available this Friday, 15 August, self-produced and distributed by Virgin Music Group.
The album opens with the introduction Burn It All Down, featuring Bethany‘s vocals, before the first track, which is none other than the song that gives the album its name, Everything’s On Fire But I’m Fine! We are immediately greeted by the bass, then the singer’s voice rings out, followed by the drums and the rest of the instruments. It’s catchy, and the chorus brings the pop-punk touch needed to get everything moving. This track evokes the current global situation (or simply a dangerous and depressing period if we want to analyse it from a personal point of view), basically saying ‘I’m fine but everything is going up in smoke’. Ready Set Go is a darker but also slower song, inspired by the underground city in the Arcane series! The band are fans of League of Legends and Bethany also regularly streams her other passion, video games, on Twitch, so this inspiration makes sense. It’s also worth noting that the guitar parts are more interesting here, with the addition of a very short solo. We continue with another single, Therapy, which continues the energetic vibe with a heavier guitar part. It’s a really cool track in which the singer talks about how writing songs is almost therapeutic for her, even though she often writes about negative feelings. For The Plot is also already well known. We sometimes find influences that are almost direct from Paramore (well, the old Paramore, and let’s hope that ADF NEVER becomes what they are now). This track remains very catchy and deals with betrayal in romantic relationships and perfect (or almost perfect) revenge. Bethany wrote this song following a chaotic experience involving her best friend, as a kind of anthem to her ex’s love.
The tracks are very short and flow perfectly into one another, so we continue with Fall Apart, which is faster and heavier than the previous compositions and is sure to be a hit for the band in live performances! Rewrite slows the pace down considerably. This very short track could be considered a ballad, and it also marks the end of the first half of the album, addressing the idea of being grateful for having gone through a difficult time but coming out stronger. Bathroom Floor once again talks about bad romantic relationships (meeting the ‘wrong’ person, realising it, moving on and knowing how to recognise the red flags in future relationships). The chorus is powerful and will surely be sung along to at the band’s live shows.
Angry Cry is another highlight of this new album. Just when we thought that I’m No Good Alone was going to slow down the pace with its theme of losing a loved one and the grieving process, it’s only in the choruses that we can let ourselves be carried away before the chorus finally explodes and showcases Bethany‘s vocal power. When you listen to Grim Reaper for the first time, you think that its catchy and joyful side evokes something positive, which is certainly the case in the bridge, but otherwise the rest of the song evokes the theme of suicidal thoughts, which the singer and lyricist has personified as the Grim Reaper. Sometimes I Hurt My Own Feelings has a steady rhythm and more metal guitar riffs in the background. This track evokes the act of overthinking and often imagining catastrophic scenarios that, fortunately, will never happen. The album concludes with This Isn’t Us, a song that seems very personal to the singer, evoking the end of a love story, much like a common thread running through Everything’s On Fire But I’m Fine. The song is the perfect ending to this new album; after all, we love listening to a ballad that allows us to settle down one last time, and that’s exactly what we get here!
As December Falls offers a really good pop-punk album with touches of emo and metal (especially in the guitars). We can’t recommend it highly enough to fans of early Paramore or Avril Lavigne (at a certain period), and we can’t wait to see the band live when they come to Paris on 11 October.
