Un peu plus de deux ans après Brand New Soul, l’OVNI de la scène hardcore Angel Du$t est de retour avec leur (déjà) sixième album, intitulé COLD 2 THE TOUCH et paru chez Run For Cover.
Si Trapped Under Ice a refait surface à quelques reprises pour quelques concerts évènements, Angel Du$t reste aujourd’hui le groupe principal de Justice Tripp, le chanteur et leader des deux groupes. Chaque nouvel album du combo de Baltimore nous amène d’abord à nous poser la question du style adopté par le groupe. Alors que le groupe avait commencé avec du hardcore brut sur Xtra Raw (2013) et A.D. (2014) puis saupoudré de sonorités plus mélodiques sur Rock the Fuck On Forever (2016) avant de nous proposer deux fabuleux albums acoustiques avec Pretty Buff (2019) puis YAK: A Collection of Truck Songs (2021). Le résultat de ce nouvel album est finalement assez proche de BRAND NEW SOUL (2023) : un retour à des sonorités globalement hardcore avec tout de même du chant clair et mélodieux et quelques morceaux plus calmes comme Jesus Head. Le groupe combine d’ailleurs les deux styles sur Man On Fire, sûrement un des meilleurs titres de l’album et qui synthétise assez bien la large palette que le groupe a pu utiliser dans sa discographie.
Dans l’ensemble, l’album se démarque par son homogénéité : il s’écoute très bien mais manque peut être de temps fort, malgré plusieurs écoutes, on a un peu de mal à en retenir un morceau ou un refrain spécifique. L’album gagnera potentiellement en valeur avec le temps et plusieurs écoutes, mais également en live, où on imagine tout de même un morceau comme Pain Is A Must prendre facilement place dans les concerts du groupe, notamment avec le passage gang vocal où est scandé le nom du groupe. L’album marque également une productivité et une longévité qui n’est pas anodine dans la scène hardcore : avec 6 albums en 12 ans et des tournées très fréquentes, le groupe continue de s’imposer comme un groupe de référence sur la scène alternative mondiale.
Après avoir exploré des styles bien différents, Angel Du$t semble vouloir se stabiliser avec ce sixième album, qui est dans la continuité de Brand New Soul, le prédécesseur de COLD 2 THE TOUCH. La formule qu’on retrouve dans l’album est de rester fidèle aux origines hardcore du groupe, en venant y incorporer quelques touches plus pop.

A little over two years after Brand New Soul, the UFO of the hardcore scene, Angel Du$t, is back with their (already) sixth album, titled COLD 2 THE TOUCH and released on Run For Cover.
While Trapped Under Ice has resurfaced a few times for a handful of special event shows, Angel Du$t remains today the main project of Justice Tripp, the singer and leader of both bands. Each new album from the Baltimore outfit first raises the question of the musical direction the band has chosen. After starting out with raw hardcore on Xtra Raw (2013) and A.D. (2014), then sprinkling in more melodic elements on Rock the Fuck On Forever (2016), the band went on to deliver two fabulous acoustic albums with Pretty Buff (2019) and YAK: A Collection of Truck Songs (2021). The result of this new album is ultimately quite close to BRAND NEW SOUL (2023): a return to an overall hardcore sound, still featuring clean, melodic vocals and a few calmer tracks such as Jesus Head. The band even blends the two styles on Man On Fire, surely one of the album’s strongest tracks and one that neatly sums up the wide palette the band has explored throughout its discography.
Overall, the album stands out for its consistency: it’s an easy listen but perhaps lacks a real standout moment. Even after several listens, it’s a bit hard to single out a specific song or chorus that truly sticks. The album will likely gain value over time and repeated listens, as well as in a live setting, where a track like Pain Is A Must will easily find its place in the band’s shows—especially thanks to the gang-vocal section where the band’s name is chanted. The album also highlights a level of productivity and longevity that is far from insignificant in the hardcore scene: with six albums in twelve years and very frequent touring, the band continues to establish itself as a key reference on the global alternative scene.
After exploring very different styles, Angel Du$t seems intent on settling into a more stable direction with this sixth album, which follows in the footsteps of Brand New Soul, the predecessor to COLD 2 THE TOUCH. The formula found on the record is to stay true to the band’s hardcore roots while incorporating a few more pop-leaning touches.
