[ENGLISH VERSION] A year after Black Sabbath brought an era to a close with a landmark concert to mark the occasion in style on 5 July 2025 at Villa Park, Tony Iommi returns with a head full of ideas and has decided to present his first solo album, *From The Dark*. Twenty years have passed between his 2005 album *Fused* and this one. Whilst *Fused* featured various guest artists throughout the album, this time Iommi has chosen to work with the same line-up of musicians across the entire record. The line-up includes Jørn Lande (Masterplan) on vocals, Becky Baldwin (Fury, Mercyful Fate) on bass and Karl Brazil on drums. The album was produced by his long-time friend Mike Exeter.
We get straight to the heart of the matter with the track ‘Over The Violent Sun’, which kicks things off with catchy, hard-hitting riffs that stick in your head. We then move on to ‘Black Times’, a heavy and gripping track that makes you want to tap your foot throughout, reminding us of the style of the Master of Heavy-Doom has honed over the years during his Sabbath era – a style that has made him one of the greatest guitar heroes we know today. ‘World Alone’, meanwhile, is a rather rock ’n’ roll track; it’s simple yet effective, making it an absolute must-listen. The album continues with ‘Beyond The Dead’, a highly orchestral composition with an atmosphere that transports us into a dark and melancholic world.
The master doesn’t forget to allude to his various eras with Black Sabbath, as in the track ‘Stormwatcher’, where one gets the impression that the guitarist wanted to give a little nod to his friend Ronnie James Dio to remind us of his Heaven and Hell days. Or take ‘Death Wakes’, which could be seen as a ballad from his Headless Cross / Tyr era (1989–1990). This track would have been perfectly suited to a singer like Tony Martins.
Throughout the album, Jørn Lande proves himself a vocal powerhouse, seamlessly transitioning between tracks, whether in the lower or higher registers. As for Becky Baldwin and Karl Brazil, they handle the rhythm section with a more modern touch than we’re used to hearing in Tony Iommi’s metal, whilst still retaining that 1970s heavy metal spirit.
The superbly executed ‘Return Of The Arbalist’ makes us want to sing the chorus at the top of our voices. And finally, ‘Legacy’ brings the artist’s work to a close with all the hallmarks we’ve come to expect from him: monstrous riffs and dark harmonies that remind us of his musical roots.
A magnificent album that’s an absolute must-buy for fans of heavy metal, as well as doom metal, and for admirers of the master of both genres.
