[ENGLISH VERSION] Just a few weeks after seeing both of tonight’s bands at Motocultor, we decided to go and see them again at a venue in Bordeaux, because for once Judas Priest are playing in our part of the world, which is quite an event. They’re, of course, supported by Nevermore, who had left us wanting more at the festival. Thanks to Olivier from Replica for the press passes, and to the team at the Arkea Arena for their warm welcome!
And the evening got off to a flying start! Having been particularly disappointed by their set at Motocultor, Nevermore completely turned things around. The energy was much better, as was the sound, and the musicians seemed in better form as they powered through the tracks once fronted by Warrel Dane. For the band’s grand return, Berzan Önende takes the lead vocals, flanked by the legendary Jeff Loomis (guitarist, formerly of Arch Enemy) and Van Williams on drums – both original members – as well as Jack Cattoi (guitar) and Semir Özerkan (bass). The line-up looks solid and, over the course of 45 minutes, will treat us to a set that draws from the band’s relatively extensive discography but, above all, showcases their 2000 album *Dead Heart In a Dead World*, with no fewer than five tracks performed – notably *Narcosynthesis*, which opens the concert, as well as *Inside Four Walls* and *The Heart Collector*, which lend darker undertones to the overall atmosphere. In short, we’re already feeling a bit more positive after this second Nevermore gig in the space of a few days, and having spoken to some of the crowd, they’re delighted to see this band again – a band which, following the death of their frontman, decided to rise from the ashes.
Next up, it’s Judas Priest’s turn. Black Sabbath’s ‘War Pigs’ echoes through the Arena, sung along by the crowd, and the band’s curtain is set to rise a few minutes later to reveal the same stage design, but featuring a screen far larger than the one at the Motoc, allowing the projected visuals to be enjoyed even more fully. The show kicks off with ‘You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’’, followed by ‘Metal Gods’ and ‘Breaking the Law’; interaction between the band and the audience is scarce, although Rob Halford does speak a few times between his numerous costume changes and the songs being played. During ‘Turbo Lover’, the Metal God disappears for half the song, singing from the side of the stage before finally returning to the front for the song’s finale (a technical fault? Need for oxygen, or something else? We’ll never know). We enjoyed the set from the stands, and honestly, it’s perhaps the best spot for a show of this scale, as you see the whole stage set in a whole new light and it’s a real feast for the eyes. After ‘Painkiller’, it’s already time for Judas Priest to kick off the encore with ‘The Hellion’ as the opener, before Rob Halford comes on with ‘Harley-Davidson’ for the grand finale featuring ‘Hell Bent For Leather’ and, above all, ‘Living After Midnight’ – which had us leaving our seats to join the crowd and dance one last time to the strains of this heavy metal classic!
A Judas Priest gig is always a brilliant live experience, and even though the band seemed a bit tired compared to their Motocultor performance, this seems almost to be to be expected given the average age of the line-up (we’d be pretty tired too if we were in their shoes)!
