[ENGLISH VERSION] Released on September 25, 2026, via Century Media Records, OPTIMIZE = OPTDEMISE is coldrain’s eighth album. Spanning 12 tracks and just over 41 minutes, the Japanese band continues to blend post-hardcore, metalcore, and melodic rock while developing a concept centered on technology, artificial intelligence, and the gradual loss of humanity.
A unique feature of the record is that the first five tracks correspond to the OPTIMIZE EP released in 2025, while the subsequent seven make up the OPTDEMISE section.
Right from the opening track, OPTIMIZE the signature coldrain sound is instantly recognizable: punchy riffs, clean vocals, Masato’s screams, and electronic touches. CHASING SHADOWS, previously unveiled in 2025, reinforces this formula with a massive chorus and energy tailor-made for live performances. DIGITOLL introduces a more industrial, electronic vibe, whereas INCOMPLETE leans into emotion and the contrast between fragility and power. FREE FALL brings this first section to a close with a much more aggressive tone.
The real turning point comes with EX-HUMANITY which adds depth to the concept and kicks off the album’s most compelling section. REST OF ME delivers a more organic, emotional energy, while POISON featuring Bert McCracken of The Used works perfectly thanks to the contrast between the two vocalists. On the guitar front, G.I.A.I.G stands out as a highlight, striking an excellent balance between heaviness, breakdowns, and a guitar solo. SING is clearly designed for the stage, featuring a chorus built for crowd participation. PICTURE PERFECT HELL continues the blend of melody and power before SAVIOR featuring Kenta Koie of Crossfaith/Aftervoid brings the album to a close with a veritable onslaught of intensity.
The main flaw of OPTIMIZE = OPTDEMISE is also its greatest strength: it is quintessential coldrain. The energy is still there, the choruses are effective, and the production is impeccable, yet the band ultimately takes few risks. Certain passages feel like a case of déjà vu when compared to their back catalog. Nevertheless, the second half brings a fresher feel and lends the concept genuine coherence. coldrain may not be revolutionizing their style, but they continue to master it with formidable efficiency.
It is a solid, energetic album built for the stage, one that simply would have benefited from offering a few more surprises.
