[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] Le deuxième album du groupe de Post-Hardcore britannique, Static Dress, Injury Episode sera disponible ce 29 mai via Sumerian Records. Dans ce nouvel opus, le groupe développe encore plus son univers sombre en y abordant des thématiques comme le deuil ou encore les différents traumatismes.
C’est avec la courte introduction lose the rain que s’ouvre l’album, on est directement plongés dans une ambiance moderne avec les cliquetis d’un clavier d’ordinateur ou les clics d’une souris avant ce qui semble être l’introduction d’un jeu vidéo peuplée de murmures lugubres. Le premier véritable morceau est donc questioning et il ne fait que nous rappeler une certaine nostalgie de l’Era Myspace de certains groupes, c’est brut , viscéral et authentique! On assiste ici à quelque chose d’agressif avec le scream qui se mêle au chant clair, les riffs de guitare saturés, c’est littéralement intense et on n’en attendait pas moins de la part de Static Dress. Pharmacy Film reste dans la même lignée de morceaux dynamiques mais avec une vibe peut-être un peu plus moderne et il passe une vitesse folle tellement qu’on en redemanderait encore. Adapter provoque une cassure dans le rythme effréné emprunté par les deux premiers morceaux, le titre est plus lent même si le refrain est plus catchy que les couplets, ici la formation s’est concentré sur l’émotion brute et les lignes de basse groovy reléguant le chant screamé au second plan même si il reviendra de façon puissante sur le break, Olli Appleyard nous offre ici une très belle performance vocale.
On continue avec le premier single dévoilé à savoir le featuring avec Underoath sur Nostalgia Kills, d’entrée de jeu la violence du morceau prend à la gorge et ne va pas nous lâcher de toute sa durée même si quelques passages en chant clair permettent de l’atténuer un peu. On peut d’ailleurs avoir l’impression sur ces moments-là où les deux chants entre en collision d’une véritable confrontation entre l’univers des deux groupes. La pluie nous accueille sur l’interlude this farewell is a… avant ce qui est probablement LE meilleur morceau de ce nouvel album : …hospice. L’influence de groupes comme My Chemical Romance est ici totalement assumée et nous plonge dans une nostalgie évidente des années 2000 avec l’apogée des groupes Emo avec notamment ce refrain puissant et gorgé d’émotions qu’on se plaira à reprendre en choeur. Le groupe évoque ici une certaine idée de la Mort mais aussi du deuil, en explorant une facette de sa musique plus douce mais pas moins intense. Laissez-vous porter et vous entendrez presque Gerard Way (MCR) vous susurrez le refrain à l’oreille. lip critic s’ouvre avec des riffs qu’aucun groupe de Punk-Rock des années 2000 ne renieraient avant d’exploser avec un chant un peu plus hargneux et plus inspiré du Post-Hardcore, l’énergie se renouvelle ici et donnera automatique envie de bouger mais aussi de hurler les paroles avec le vocaliste.
Male-bomb rend les choses plus chaotiques, plus folles encore, le morceau se finit de façon surprenante avec une section jazzy qui s’incorporte parfaitement au reste mais pourrait en dérouter certains. « Are You Satisfied? » c’est le leitmotiv de dull blade disguise répété par des voix tordues à la fin du titre avant d’enchaîner sur Classic.Death.Pose plus agressif, toujours plus emprunt de chaos et d’urgence, on est ici sur quelque chose de très rapide.Adult Diamond revient à quelque chose de plus soft avec une guitare accoustique et du chant clair, ce nouveau morceau appelle au calme et presque à la rêverie. Le single human props prend la suite et renoue avec quelque chose de plus agressif et de plus moderne dans son approche avant l’interlude not a lesson to be endured, but one… qui va se terminer sur un « goodbye » et introduit le tout dernier titre Treading. Static Dress lance une dernière bombe d’énergie à la tronche des auditeurs avant de nous lâcher presque pantois et à bout de souffle d’avoir écouter un album aussi bon.
Intensité, Authenticité et Brutalité voici trois mots pour résumer ce nouvel opus de Static Dress qui se savoure en une fois comme en plusieurs et qu’on se plaira à relancer presque aussitôt après la fin tellement certains morceaux vont rester dans la tête. A savourer et à découvrir en live prochainement, on espère!

[ENGLISH VERSION] The second album by British post-hardcore band Static Dress, *Injury Episode*, will be released on 29 May via Sumerian Records. On this new album, the band further explores their dark universe, tackling themes such as grief and various forms of trauma.
The album opens with the short intro ‘Lose the Rain’, plunging us straight into a modern atmosphere with the clatter of a computer keyboard and the clicks of a mouse, before what sounds like the intro to a video game filled with eerie whispers. The first proper track is ‘Questioning’, and it evokes a certain nostalgia for the Myspace era of certain bands – it’s raw, visceral and authentic! Here we’re treated to something aggressive, with screams blending with clean vocals and distorted guitar riffs; it’s literally intense, and we’d expect nothing less from Static Dress. ‘Pharmacy Film’ follows in the same vein of dynamic tracks but with a vibe that’s perhaps a little more modern, and it flies by so quickly that we’d be left wanting more. ‘Adapter’ breaks the frenetic pace set by the first two tracks; the song is slower, even if the chorus is catchier than the verses. Here, the band has focused on raw emotion and groovy basslines, relegating the screamed vocals to the background, though they return powerfully during the break, with Olli Appleyard delivering a superb vocal performance.
We continue with the first single released, namely the collaboration with Underoath on ‘Nostalgia Kills’. Right from the start, the track’s intensity grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go for its entire duration, even if a few passages of clean vocals help to soften it slightly. In fact, during these moments when the two vocal styles collide, one gets the impression of a genuine clash between the worlds of the two bands. The rain greets us on the interlude ‘this farewell is a…’ before what is probably THE best track on this new album: …hospice. The influence of bands like My Chemical Romance is fully embraced here, plunging us into an obvious nostalgia for the 2000s and the heyday of emo bands, particularly with this powerful, emotion-laden chorus that we’ll happily sing along to. The band evokes a certain idea of Death here, but also of mourning, exploring a softer yet no less intense facet of their music. Let yourself be carried away and you’ll almost hear Gerard Way (MCR) whispering the chorus in your ear. ‘Lip Critic’ opens with riffs that no 2000s punk-rock band would turn their nose up at, before exploding into vocals that are a bit more aggressive and more inspired by post-hardcore; the energy is renewed here and will automatically make you want to move, but also to scream the lyrics along with the vocalist.
Male-bomb makes things even more chaotic and wild; the track ends surprisingly with a jazzy section that fits perfectly with the rest but might throw some listeners off. “Are You Satisfied?” is the leitmotif of Dull Blade Disguise, repeated by distorted voices at the end of the track before flowing into Classic. Death.Pose is more aggressive, ever more steeped in chaos and urgency; here we’re dealing with something very fast. Adult Diamond returns to something softer with an acoustic guitar and clean vocals; this new track calls for calm and almost a daydream. The single “Human Props” follows, returning to a more aggressive and modern approach, before the interlude “Not a Lesson to Be Endured, But One…” which ends with a “goodbye” and introduces the very last track, “Treading”. Static Dress unleashes one final burst of energy on the listeners before leaving us almost speechless and breathless from having listened to such a brilliant album.
Intensity, Authenticity and Brutality: these are three words to sum up this new album by Static Dress, which can be savoured in one go or over several listens, and which you’ll want to play again almost immediately after it ends, as certain tracks will stick in your head.
