[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] Ce vendredi 6 mars, Lost Society a sorti son nouvel album Hell Is A State Of Mind via Nuclear Blast Records. 4 ans après If The Sky Came Down, qui a littéralement été un énorme coup de coeur pour nous, on attendais du nouveau de la part du groupe de pied ferme!
Le morceau d’ouverture Afterlife commence avec une atmosphère inquiétante soutenue par la voix du frontman Samy Elbanna suivie de près par des riffs et un chant mi scream-mi rap de la part du musicien. Puis ce sont les orchestrations qui viennent se mettre en place apportant une nouvelle dimension à l’univers déjà relativement riche de Lost Society. On continue avec le single Blood Diamond, où les orchestrations prennent plus de place et là où sur le morceau précédent elle donnait un côté presque majestueux ici on a plutôt l’impression d’évoluer dans quelque chose de plus théâtral qui sert bien le morceau mais qui pourrait paraître trop pour certains, certains passages peuvent parfois rappeler des groupes comme Avenged Sevenfold sur leur album éponyme. Synthetic lui nous plonge dans un côté Nu-Metal des années 2000 avec des passages scratchés en y apportant des influences nouvelles mais le côté Metal Moderne est ici à son paroxysme, la voix du chanteur/guitariste se révèle sur les couplets et le talent des deux guitaristes (Samy et Arttu) est là encore une des raisons qui font que les auditeurs apprécieront ce morceau.
Le single Is This What You Wanted dévoile un côté plus doux/fragile/émotionnel de Lost Society qui prendra d’ailleurs toute sa dimension sur ce refrain absolument magistral. Et ce solo soutenu par la batterie, excusez-nous mais un vrai régal! L’appel du Vide revient à quelque chose de plus catchy avec toujours des orchestrations à foison, ce qui peut gâcher l’expérience par moments (trop d’orchestrations tue les orchestrations). Kill The Light se transforme certes là encore avec des fioritures déjà bien présentes sur le reste de l’album mais ici le tout en fait un des morceaux les plus marquants sur ce nouvel opus (et le clip est disponible depuis ce matin également). On a d’ailleurs l’impression d’une certaine dualité sur ce titre notamment au niveau de la voix qui se veut à la fois démoniaque mais aussi plus « claire » et limpide ici pas question de douceur dans tout les cas mais plus d’un côté Ange/Démon en combat perpétuel.
No Longer Human va revenir sur un côté plus émotionnel et brut, un des aspects les plus importants depuis If The Sky… dans la construction de Lost Society. Un titre imposant qui risque de devenir un incontournable si d’aventure il est joué en live. Dead People Scare Me… (Living Make Me Sick) revient à la charge, c’est catchy avec un refrain qui va rentrer dans les crânes et sans payer de loyer. Samy se transforme presque en démon enchaînant un refrain presque possédé mais aussi des passages plus Rap sur les couplets qui s’accordent parfaitement à l’ensemble « Everybody Horns Up »! et on finira par un constat peut-être effrayant mais les morts font peur mais les vivants sont bien plus terrifiants qu’eux, au final! Personal Judas révèle un côté encore plus sombre de la formation, sur lequel vient se greffer quelques mélodies plus…Electro voire Techno assez surprenant mais après tout, pourquoi pas? On finit avec le morceau éponyme Hell Is A State Of Mind, morceau lui aussi soutenu par des instruments à cordes qui amplifient le côté sombre et pesant, des voix plus ancrés dans un côté Pop et des screams viscéraux. Un final majestueux mais qui pourra surprendre dans les dernières secondes!
Lost Society nous a sorti un album déroutant et avec de nouvelles influences qui vont qu’on ne pourra en définitive jamais se lasser de ce groupe même si il ne plaira ni aux fans de leurs premiers opus plus orientés Thrash Metal ou encore à ceux de l’album précédent. Ici, on a plutôt été surpris avec un léger bémol concernant les orchestrations qui gâchent parfois le plaisir de l’écoute. On espère en tout cas revoir le groupe très vite en France.

[ENGLISH VERSION] On Friday, March 6, Lost Society released their new album Hell Is A State Of Mind via Nuclear Blast Records. Four years after If The Sky Came Down, which we absolutely loved, we were eagerly awaiting something new from the band!
The opening track, Afterlife, begins with an unsettling atmosphere supported by frontman Samy Elbanna‘s voice, closely followed by riffs and the musician’s half-scream, half-rap vocals. Then the orchestrations kick in, adding a new dimension to Lost Society‘s already relatively rich universe. We continue with the single Blood Diamond, where the orchestrations take up more space. Whereas on the previous track they gave an almost majestic feel, here we have the impression of evolving into something more theatrical, which serves the track well but may seem too much for some. Some moments are sometimes reminiscent of bands like Avenged Sevenfold on their eponymous album. Synthetic plunges us into the Nu-Metal sound of the 2000s with scratched passages, bringing new influences to the mix, but the Modern Metal aspect is at its peak here. The singer/guitarist’s voice comes into its own on the verses, and the talent of the two guitarists (Samy and Arttu) is another reason why listeners will enjoy this track.
The single Is This What You Wanted reveals a softer/more fragile/emotional side to Lost Society, which really comes into its own in the absolutely masterful chorus. And that solo backed by the drums – excuse me, but it’s a real treat! L’appel du Vide returns to something more catchy, still with plenty of orchestrations, which can spoil the experience at times (too many orchestrations kill the orchestrations). Kill The Light is certainly transformed here too, with flourishes already present on the rest of the album, but here it all makes it one of the most memorable tracks on this new opus (and the video has also been available since this morning). There is a certain duality to this track, particularly in the vocals, which are both demonic and yet clearer and more limpid. There is no question of gentleness here, but rather an angel/demon aspect in perpetual combat.
No Longer Human returns to a more emotional and raw side, one of the most important aspects since If The Sky… in the construction of Lost Society. It’s an imposing track that is likely to become a must-hear if it is played live. Dead People Scare Me… (Living Make Me Sick) returns to the fray, catchy with a chorus that will stick in your head for free. Samy almost transforms into a demon, delivering an almost possessed chorus, but also more rap passages on the verses that fit perfectly with the whole ‘Everybody Horns Up’! We end with a perhaps frightening observation: the dead are scary, but the living are even more terrifying than them in the end! Personal Judas reveals an even darker side of the band, to which are added some more surprising electro or even techno melodies, but after all, why not? We end with the eponymous track Hell Is A State Of Mind, also supported by string instruments that amplify the dark and heavy side, voices more rooted in pop and visceral screams. A majestic finale, but one that may surprise you in the final seconds!
Lost Society has released a confusing album with new influences that mean we will never tire of this band, even if it won’t appeal to fans of their earlier, more thrash metal-oriented works or those of their previous album. Here, we were rather surprised, with a slight downside concerning the orchestrations, which sometimes spoil the listening pleasure. In any case, we hope to see the band again very soon in France.
