[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] Après l’annonce d’un hiatus qui semblait bien long et un EP Childhood Eyes sorti en 2023 pour annoncer leur retour, on désespérait quand même d’entendre un nouvel album de Yellowcard! Mais la formation nous a bien trompés et est de retour depuis le 10 octobre dernier avec un dixième album studio intitulé Better Days disponible via Better Noise Music, produit par Travis Barker qui a également assuré les parties de batterie sur ce nouvel opus.
C’est avec le single éponyme Better Days qu’on va retrouver le son caractéristique du groupe, un hymne pop-punk pour combattre la routine qui nous enlise (thématique du morceau) avec une performance vocale puissante de Ryan Key et surtout ce jeu de batterie extrêmement reconnaissable. Mais n’oublions pas non plus Sean Mackin et son violon qui vient apporter comme injecter plus de soleil à l’ensemble. Take What You Want garde la dynamique pop-punk de Better Days, avec un refrain hymnique qui devrait donner lieu à de très beaux moments en live. Ouvrir l’album avec deux bangers c’est des fois une prise de risque puisqu’on aura toujours peur d’être déçus par les morceaux derrière mais…il n’en sera rien! Et c’est avec Love Letters Lost qui signe aussi le premier feat sur cet album avec rien de moins que Matt Skiba (Alkaline Trio, ex-Blink 182), son timbre s’adapte parfaitement à l’univers de Yellowcard et l’ambiance générale du titre qui nous replonge avec bonheur (presque) à l’époque de Ocean Avenue (2003) ou encore à celle de Nine de Blink sorti en 2019, Blink et Yellowcard c’est un duo qui fonctionne plutôt bien à croire et on se retrouve vite enveloppé dans ce cocon réconfortant qui rappelle notre adolescence.
honestly i nous ramène toujours à Ocean Avenue avec son violon bien plus présent comme sur un morceau phare du groupe à savoir Believe. Le tout reste énergique, avec cette ambiance empreinte de nostalgie avec laquelle Yellowcard semble vouloir nous « torturer » gentiment. You Broke Me Too est le dernier duo sur cet album et on retrouve cette fois-ci la chanteuse Avril Lavigne, une jolie ballade qui rappelle aisément les premiers albums de Avril avec des titres puissants comme I’m With You même si ici c’est quand même un poil plus Rock que la ballade mentionnée. Un très bon morceau et un duo vocal qui se complète à merveille avant City Of Angels et son changement de dynamique total! Une boîte à rythmes avec des beats presque Hip-Hop et des synthés changent toute l’ambiance de Better Days mais au final on continue dans une ambiance plus calme introduite par You Broke Me Too et plus relaxante.
Bedroom Posters va ramener l’énergie des titres précédents, c’est sympa sans en faire trop! Tout comme Skin Scraped avec son ambiance plus brute tout en restant soignée et qui rappelle le son de Blink des années 2000 sur des sons comme Down ou encore Obvious et avec la présence de Travis Barker aux manettes, il est peu surprenant de retrouver ce genre de titres dans l’album! Barely Alive est un morceau plus « discret » mais pas moins intense sur Better Days, le violon accompagne parfaitement la voix de Ryan qui vient remuer tout un tas d’émotions et se fait presque plus vulnérable ici. Et le temps est passé à une vitesse folle et Yellowcard nous lâche sur Big Blue Eyes, une ballade acoustique délicate qui parle d’amour sans être trop niaise/mièvre, une jolie fin pour un très bel album!
Yellowcard est de retour au meilleur de sa forme et le prouve avec Better Days! L’attente en valait largement la peine et le groupe a prit le temps de composer un des plus grands albums de sa carrière (le plus grand étant bien sûr Ocean Avenue). En espérant les voir très vite sur scène en France.

[ENGLISH VERSION] After announcing what seemed like a very long hiatus and releasing the EP Childhood Eyes in 2023 to announce their return, we had almost given up hope of hearing a new album from Yellowcard! But the band proved us wrong and returned on October 10 with their tenth studio album, Better Days, available via Better Noise Music and produced by Travis Barker, who also played drums on the new release.
The eponymous single Better Days showcases the band’s signature sound, a pop-punk anthem about fighting the rut that traps us (the song’s theme) with powerful vocals from Ryan Key and, above all, that instantly recognizable drumming. But let’s not forget Sean Mackin and his violin, which injects even more sunshine into the mix. Take What You Want maintains the pop-punk dynamic of Better Days, with an anthemic chorus that should make for some great live moments. Opening an album with two bangers is sometimes a risk, as we’re always afraid of being disappointed by the tracks that follow, but… that’s not the case here! Love Letters Lost is the first collaboration on the album, featuring none other than Matt Skiba (Alkaline Trio, ex-Blink 182), whose voice fits perfectly with Yellowcard‘s sound and the overall vibe of the track, which happily takes us (almost) back to the days of Ocean Avenue (2003) or even Blink‘s Nine, released in 2019. Blink and Yellowcard are a duo that works rather well, and we quickly find ourselves enveloped in this comforting cocoon that reminds us of our adolescence.
Honestly I takes us back to Ocean Avenue with its violin much more present, as on one of the band’s flagship tracks, Believe. The whole thing remains energetic, with an atmosphere tinged with nostalgia with which Yellowcard seems to want to gently “torture” us. You Broke Me Too is the last duet on this album, this time featuring singer Avril Lavigne. It’s a pretty ballad that easily recalls Avril Lavigne‘s early albums with powerful tracks like I’m With You, even if it’s a tad more rock than the aforementioned ballad. It’s a very good track and a vocal duet that complements each other perfectly before City Of Angels and its total change of dynamic! A drum machine with almost hip-hop beats and synths change the whole vibe of Better Days, but in the end, we continue in a calmer, more relaxing mood introduced by You Broke Me Too.
Bedroom Posters brings back the energy of the previous tracks, which is nice without being over the top! The same goes for Skin Scraped, with its rawer yet polished vibe, reminiscent of Blink‘s sound in the 2000s on tracks like Down and Obvious. With Travis Barker at the helm, it’s no surprise to find this kind of track on the album! Barely Alive is a more “discreet” but no less intense track on Better Days, with the violin perfectly accompanying Ryan‘s voice, which stirs up a whole range of emotions and seems almost more vulnerable here. Time has flown by at breakneck speed, and Yellowcard leaves us with Big Blue Eyes, a delicate acoustic ballad about love without being too corny or saccharine, a lovely ending to a beautiful album!
Yellowcard is back at its best and proves it with Better Days! The wait was well worth it, and the band took the time to compose one of the greatest albums of its career (the greatest being, of course, Ocean Avenue). Here’s hoping to see them on stage in France very soon.
