[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] Après Exorcism sorti en 2021, le groupe américain Living Dead Girl mené par Molly Rennick a sorti son deuxième album studio Conspiracy le 10 octobre dernier via Buried Alive Records.
CONSPIRACY le morceau éponyme ouvre l’album et ça sonne tout de suite comme un pur morceau de Metal Moderne en effet la formation évolue dans ce style musical depuis ses débuts tout en y incorporant les influences plus Pop de la chanteuse/guitariste, Molly. Là encore elle alterne entre chant clair avec son timbre très particulière mais qui se reconnaît tout de suite et un scream typiquement Metalcore. Un très bon morceau d’ouverture assez classique en soit mais qui reste efficace. C’est le single POISON ME qui prend la suite et on en découvre plus sur la palette vocale de la vocaliste notamment dans son chant clair sur les couplets. Le morceau évoque une relation toxique avec une personne qui pourrait être assimilée à un(e) pervers(e) narcissique. Le prochain titre WE’LL ALL BE DEAD évolue lui dans un registre plus Pop surtout sur le refrain tout en gardant une touche Metalcore/Modern Metal notamment au niveau de l’instrumental et du scream encore relativement bien présent. La thématique du morceau est ici en soit un grand classique, le temps qui passe et avec ça le fait de ne pas avoir de seconde chance dans certaines situations.
Un autre single cette fois-ci UGLY et ses cris viscéraux et son instrumental ravageur soutenu par la batterie de Steve Haining. Un refrain avec des influences des débuts d’Avril Lavigne (une des grandes inspirations de Molly) mais des screams qu’on pourrait sans effort attribués à Tatiana de Jinjer. TEMPTATION est un très court interlude avant SUCCUBUS qui nous plonge dans une intro évoluant presque dans l’univers de Nine Inch Nails tout en apportant une touche de modernité tournée vers le Metalcore. Ce qu’on peut retenir depuis notre découverte du groupe avec leur EP Not That Innocent, c’est qu’il a évolué et plutôt en très bien même si il continue à évoluer dans un univers Metalcore avec des accords Pop, Molly a pris de l’assurance notamment au niveau de ses screams bien plus puissants, la production est aussi bien meilleure et cela s’entend bien sûr sur THE DISEASE un des nouveaux morceaux! C’est punchy, hyper énergique avec beaucoup de screams et toujours un refrain très Pop qui fait l’identité du groupe. Le morceau évoque ici une relation fantasmée dont a (probablement) été victime Molly par une personne qu’elle ne connaît pas. Probablement un des meilleurs morceaux sur Conspiracy.
BRAINWASHED est un morceau plus agressif, plus rapide sur lequel le groupe délivre toute sa puissance et sa rage. Là encore une très belle réussite avant de changer radicalement d’ambiance avec WILD & FREE, une introduction très « Dance » qui évolue vite vers un morceau qui reste quand même idéal pour faire la fête tout en gardant une certaine puissance avec ce côté très entraînant sur le refrain. UNSTOPPABLE nous a fait directement penser au banger qu’avait été DYSFUNCTIONNAL, avant que Living Dead Girl ne referme ce deuxième album avec SURVIVAL MODE, le morceau est bien plus calme que les précédents même si les guitares font leur retour sur le refrain, la cadence ralentit sur les couplets plus épurés sur lesquels on profite pleinement de la voix claire de Molly. Les screams finissent tout de même par revenir mais en arrière-plan sur le deuxième refrain comme si la fureur se contenait pour exploser.
Ce nouvel album de Living Dead Girl montre à quel point l’évolution du groupe est extrêmement positive. Il est à la fois plus lourd tout en restant très accrocheur, plus sombre mais aussi plus mélodique. C’est un solide pas en avant dans leur carrière et par rapport à leur tout premier album, en espérant que le groupe arrivera à se faire encore plus remarquer avec Conspiracy!

[ENGLISH VERSION] Following Exorcism, released in 2021, the American band Living Dead Girl, led by Molly Rennick, released their second studio album, Conspiracy, on October 10 via Buried Alive Records.
CONSPIRACY, the eponymous track, opens the album and immediately sounds like pure modern metal. Indeed, the band has been evolving in this musical style since its inception, while incorporating the more pop influences of singer/guitarist Molly. Here again, she alternates between clear vocals with her very distinctive but instantly recognizable tone and a typical metalcore scream. It’s a very good opening track, fairly classic in itself but still effective. The single POISON ME follows, and we discover more of the vocalist’s vocal range, particularly in her clean singing on the verses. The song evokes a toxic relationship with a person who could be likened to a narcissistic pervert. The next track, WE’LL ALL BE DEAD, moves into a more pop register, especially in the chorus, while retaining a touch of metalcore/modern metal, particularly in the instrumental section and the screams, which are still relatively prominent. The theme of the song is a classic one: the passing of time and the fact that there are no second chances in certain situations.
Another single, this time UGLY, features visceral screams and devastating instrumentals supported by Steve Haining‘s drums. The chorus is influenced by early Avril Lavigne (one of Molly‘s main inspirations), but the screams could easily be attributed to Tatiana from Jinjer. TEMPTATION is a very short interlude before SUCCUBUS, which plunges us into an intro that almost evolves into the world of Nine Inch Nails, while adding a touch of modernity geared towards metalcore. What we can take away from our discovery of the band with their EP Not That Innocent is that they have evolved, and rather well at that. Even though they continue to evolve in a metalcore universe with pop chords, Molly has gained confidence, particularly in her much more powerful screams. The production is also much better, which is of course evident on THE DISEASE, one of the new tracks! It’s punchy, hyper-energetic with lots of screams and still has the very pop chorus that defines the band’s identity. The song evokes a fantasized relationship that Molly (probably) fell victim to with someone she doesn’t know. Probably one of the best songs on Conspiracy.
BRAINWASHED is a more aggressive, faster track on which the band delivers all its power and rage. Again, a great success before radically changing the mood with WILD & FREE, a very “dance” intro that quickly evolves into a track that is still ideal for partying while retaining a certain power with its very catchy chorus. UNSTOPPABLE immediately reminded us of the banger that was DYSFUNCTIONAL, before Living Dead Girl closes this second album with SURVIVAL MODE. The track is much calmer than the previous ones, even if the guitars make a comeback on the chorus. The pace slows down on the more refined verses, where we can fully enjoy Molly‘s clear voice. The screams do eventually return, but in the background on the second chorus, as if the fury is being contained, waiting to explode.
This new album from Living Dead Girl shows how extremely positive the band’s evolution has been. It is heavier while remaining very catchy, darker but also more melodic. It’s a solid step forward in their career and compared to their very first album, hopefully the band will manage to get even more attention with Conspiracy!
