Testament, l’une des pierres angulaires du thrash metal depuis la fin des années 80, mêle virtuosité, agressivité et fidélité aux racines du genre, tout en acceptant quelques évolutions.
Leur discographie, riche en classiques, a toujours su allier riffs tranchants, soli marquants et chant imposant de Chuck Billy.
Après Titans of Creation (2020), ils reviennent en 2025 avec Para Bellum, leur quatorzième album studio, marqué également par l’arrivée du batteur Chris Dovas, ce qui donne une nouvelle impulsion au groupe.
Para Bellum est disponible depuis le 10 octobre sous le label Nuclear Blast.
For The Love Of Pain
L’album démarre avec un uppercut direct : riffing tranchant, basse profonde, batterie supersonique et ambiance bestiale. On ressent une influence blackened death metal marquée, en particulier via la puissance vocale de Chuck Billy, le riffing speed des guitares et les blasts ultra-rapides de Chris Dovas. Une entrée en matière qui vient nous attraper par le col dès le départ. Pas le temps, et surtout, plus besoin de se présenter pour Testament, juste la nécessité d’envoyer de la grosse explosion en pleine face. Le son est compact, et le morceau nous impose immédiatement un niveau de cadence élevé.
Infanticide A.I.
Premier single dévoilé, et pour cause: c’est un concentré de tout ce que Testament sait faire de mieux. Rapide, mordant et féroce, avec une critique assez frontale de l’intelligence artificielle et de toutes ses dérives. Chris Dovas nous montre l’étalage de son talent et de sa précision, prouvant au passage son apport au sein de la formation. Les guitares sont remplies d’agressivité, le tout dans un morceau speed thrash, plein d’urgence. Ce titre montre que le groupe ne se contente pas de ressasser ses classiques, mais cherche aussi à s’inscrire dans l’actualité d’aujourd’hui.
Shadow People
Shadow People ralentit un peu le rythme pour nous emmener sur quelque chose de plus massif, plus ample, moins speed, mais pas mollasson pour autant. Ce morceau possède une lourdeur abyssale, tout en jouant sur des ambiances menaçantes, voire sinistres. Le groove est bien construit, la montée en tension est maîtrisée, les contrastes entre moments plus calmes et portions plus impulsives fonctionnent bien. En particulier sur des passages aux relents black bien malsains, et des solos de guitares d’un contrôle absolu. Le titre montre la capacité du groupe à ralentir le tempo sans perdre en impact.
Meant To Be
Testament nous propose une pause calme entre deux cyclones. Une ballade « à l’ancienne », qui nous offre une respiration nécessaire. Le début acoustique élève l’émotion avec délicatesse, les arrangements de cordes en arrière-plan apportent de la consistance à l’ensemble et construisent des parties émotionnelles discrètes, mais efficaces. Chuck Billy montre une facette plus douce, sans trahir son timbre particulier, et nous prouve l’étendue de son registre vocal. Le morceau prend son temps, pour notre plus grand plaisir; cela contribue à nous faire apprécier tout le travail de composition, aux petits oignons, des sections de guitares. Et au passage, il permet aussi à l’album de ne pas être qu’un tsunami continu d’agressivité thrash.
High Noon
Après cette parenthèse de légèreté, on retourne sur des terres plus heavy avec High Noon. Le titre possède quelque chose de très viscéral, un mélange de tension constante et de voltige de guitares, associé à un refrain intense. Le tout sonne moins « extrême » que les déferlements précédents, mais reste très efficace dans son impact, dans sa capacité à créer une ambiance plus dramatique. On assiste là à une avalanche contenue, plus qu’à une explosion indomptable.
Witch Hunt
La carte du thrash pur revient nous attraper les tripes avec ce Witch Hunt. Vitesse, déflagration : le riff est vicieux, les breaks viennent donner un contexte idéal pour bien s’exploser les cervicales dans les règles de l’art. C’est le Testament qu’on attend quand on veut se faire du mal et se bousculer à fond dans le pogo. Ce morceau ne se contente pas de livrer de la vigueur et de l’intensité, il montre que le groupe maîtrise encore les zigzags rythmiques, les ambiances sombres et les compositions plus complexes, conservant cette flamme comme jadis.
Nature Of The Beast
On ressent directement un groove bien plus marqué. Nature Of The Beast prend le temps d’installer ses riffs, de nous amener, petit à petit, ses mélodies, sans chercher à tout faire exploser immédiatement. Ce n’est pas le titre qu’on retiendra à la première écoute, mais il a le mérite d’être totalement contrôlé et d’apporter un bon « entracte » pour la suite des hostilités. Il tient bien la dynamique de l’album, tout en évitant de tomber dans le piège du déjà-vu.
Room 117
Avec son introduction et son riffing à la Arch Enemy, Room 117 est l’un des morceaux les plus mélodiques et accrocheurs de Para Bellum. Le chant de Chuck paraît plus introspectif, passant par une narration que l’on ressent plus personnelle. La basse, groovy, nous donne de la matière et gonfle le morceau. Le riff principal est ancré dans la mélodie et le feeling, la montée en puissance est bien dosée pour arriver sur des solos de toute beauté. Le refrain nous reste en tête assez facilement, un morceau qui prouve que Testament peut allier puissance et mélodie avec finesse, sans tomber dans la facilité.
Havana Syndrome
Sur ce titre, on sent une montée de tension immédiate. Le rythme est rapide, soutenu, les guitares sont incisives. On a une bonne mise en valeur de la dynamique entre brutalité et clair-obscur, notamment sur les alternances de riffs lourds et de soli harmoniques. La voix de Chuck est plus arrachée, serrée. Peut-être pas un morceau qui marquera les esprits, mais un moment appréciable pour ceux qui aiment les ambiances lourdes avec des riffs mélodiques qui se faufilent.
Para Bellum
Le morceau-titre vient clôturer l’album avec force. On commence avec une intro tendue, voire guerrière. Ça monte progressivement vers l’explosion, mélangeant des reliefs mélodiques avec des parties thrash. C’est une sorte de synthèse où toutes les forces du disque se rejoignent : le chant gras et féroce de Chuck Billy, les riffs mélodiques et gorgés de feeling de la paire Eric Peterson / Alex Skolnick, la batterie véloce et hargneuse de Dovas, puis le groove épais de Steve DiGiorgio à la basse. Un final digne qui nous laisse essoufflés, mais satisfaits. Un « nouveau testament » de ce que le groupe est capable d’engendrer, même après quatre décennies de carrière.
Conclusion
Avec Para Bellum, Testament prouve une nouvelle fois qu’il reste un pilier incontournable du thrash metal moderne. L’album est à la fois une célébration de leur héritage et une démonstration de leur vitalité actuelle. Chris Dovas insuffle une énergie neuve sans dénaturer le son du groupe, tandis que Chuck Billy et le duo Skolnick/Peterson signent des performances d’une intensité rare. Entre violence maîtrisée, mélodies inspirées et cohésion totale, Para Bellum montre qu’après quarante ans, Testament n’a rien perdu de sa hargne ni de sa pertinence. Un disque aussi massif qu’intelligent, aussi brutal qu’émotionnel.

Testament, one of the cornerstones of thrash metal since the late 1980s, combines virtuosity, aggression, and loyalty to the genre’s roots, while embracing a few evolutions.
Their discography, rich in classics, has always combined sharp riffs, striking solos, and Chuck Billy’s imposing vocals.
After Titans of Creation (2020), they return in 2025 with Para Bellum, their fourteenth studio album, also marked by the arrival of drummer Chris Dovas, who brings new energy to the band.
Para Bellum has been available since October 10 with Nuclear Blast label.
For The Love Of Pain
The album kicks off with a direct uppercut: sharp riffing, deep bass, supersonic drums, and a beastly atmosphere. There is a marked blackened death metal influence, particularly in Chuck Billy’s powerful vocals, the speed riffing of the guitars, and Chris Dovas’ ultra-fast blasts. It’s an introduction that grabs us by the collar right from the start. There’s no time, and above all, no need to introduce Testament, just the need to send a big explosion right in your face. The sound is compact, and the track immediately imposes a high tempo on us.
Infanticide A.I.
The first single to be unveiled, and for good reason: it’s a distillation of everything Testament does best. Fast, biting, and ferocious, with a fairly direct critique of artificial intelligence and all its excesses. Chris Dovas shows off his talent and precision, proving his contribution to the band. The guitars are full of aggression, all in a speed thrash track full of urgency. This track shows that the band isn’t content to just rehash its classics, but is also seeking to engage with current events.
Shadow People
Shadow People slows the pace down a bit to take us to something more massive, more expansive, less speedy, but not sluggish. This track has an abyssal heaviness, while playing on threatening, even sinister atmospheres. The groove is well constructed, the build-up of tension is masterful, and the contrasts between quieter moments and more impulsive sections work well. This is particularly true of passages with venomous black metal overtones and guitar solos played with absolute control. The track demonstrates the band’s ability to slow down the tempo without losing any of its impact.
Meant To Be
Testament offers us a calm interlude between two cyclones. An “old-fashioned” ballad that gives us a much-needed breather. The acoustic beginning delicately heightens the emotion, while the string arrangements in the background add consistency to the whole and build discreet but effective emotional parts. Chuck Billy shows a softer side, without betraying his distinctive tone, and demonstrates the extent of his vocal range. The song takes its time, much to our delight, allowing us to appreciate the meticulous composition of the guitar sections. And in passing, it also prevents the album from being a continuous tsunami of thrash aggression.
High Noon
After this lighthearted interlude, we return to heavier territory with High Noon. The track has something very visceral about it, a mixture of constant tension and soaring guitars, combined with an intense chorus. The whole thing sounds less “extreme” than the previous tracks, but remains very effective in its impact and its ability to create a more dramatic atmosphere. What we have here is a contained avalanche rather than an uncontrollable explosion.
Witch Hunt
The pure thrash card comes back to grab us by the guts with Witch Hunt. Speed, explosion: the riff is vicious, the breaks provide the ideal context for properly blowing your neck out in the proper manner. This is the Testament we expect when we want to hurt ourselves and push each other around in the mosh pit. This track doesn’t just deliver vigor and intensity, it shows that the band still masters rhythmic zigzags, dark atmospheres, and more complex compositions, keeping that flame alive as in the past.
Nature Of The Beast
You immediately feel a much stronger groove. Nature Of The Beast takes the time to set up its riffs, bringing us its melodies little by little, without trying to blow everything up immediately. It’s not the track that sticks in your mind on first listen, but it has the merit of being totally controlled and providing a good “intermission” for the rest of the hostilities. It maintains the album’s dynamic well, while avoiding the trap of déjà vu.
Room 117
With its introduction and Arch Enemy-style riffing, Room 117 is one of the most melodic and catchy tracks on Para Bellum. Chuck’s vocals seem more introspective, with a narrative that feels more personal. The groovy bass gives us substance and beefs up the track. The main riff is rooted in melody and feeling, and the build-up is well balanced, leading to some beautiful solos. The chorus sticks in your head quite easily, proving that Testament can combine power and melody with finesse, without falling into the trap of taking the easy route.
Havana Syndrome
On this track, you feel an immediate rise in tension. The rhythm is fast and sustained, and the guitars are incisive. The dynamics between brutality and chiaroscuro are well highlighted, particularly in the alternation between heavy riffs and harmonic solos. Chuck’s voice is more raw and tight. It may not be a track that will leave a lasting impression, but it’s an enjoyable moment for those who like heavy atmospheres with melodic riffs that sneak in.
Para Bellum
The title track closes the album with force. It begins with a tense, even warlike intro. It gradually builds to an explosion, mixing melodic relief with thrash parts. It’s a kind of synthesis where all the strengths of the album come together : Chuck Billy’s fat and ferocious vocals, the melodic and soulful riffs of Eric Peterson and Alex Skolnick, Dovas’ fast and aggressive drums, and Steve DiGiorgio’s thick groove on bass. It’s a worthy finale that leaves us breathless but satisfied. A “new testament” of what the band is capable of, even after four decades of career.

With Para Bellum, Testament proves once again that it remains an essential pillar of modern thrash metal.
