[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] C’est sept ans après la sortie de The Awakening, que le groupe Emo, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus a sorti son sixième album studio le 3 octobre dernier via Better Noise Music. Ce nouvel opus contient de nouveaux morceaux mais aussi quelques (anciennes) surprises.
Et c’est avec Always The King que le groupe va nous plonger dans un son Old-School de l’époque, la voix du chanteur Ronnie Winter n’a pas bougée d’un poil avec les années et même si la composition paraît bien calme, quelques passages avec un peu de scream font nous faire revenir à la bonne époque…Tout comme la voix de Kellin Quinn (Sleeping With Sirens) présent ici, les voix des deux vocalistes s’harmonisent parfaitement avant un break où alternent les deux chants, l’entrée en matière est plutôt sympa même si au final on s’attendait peut-être à un peu mieux. Purple Halo semble revenir sur quelque chose de plus Pop-Punk là où on retrouve plus le « vieux » TRJA avec des paroles un peu niaises qui là vont nous faire revenir à l’époque Myspace « Are You My Dark Angel? », c’est plutôt ce genre de titre qu’on aurait vu en ouverture et pas Always The King. Tout comme Perfection qui reste dans la même veine, on revient aux chansons sur les profils Myspace avec les paroles en statut MSN (« This is ripped out of my heart This is language of the heart »), c’est purement le genre de titre d’ Alt Rock qu’on apprécie.
Le single X’S For Eyes avec son refrain entraînant (« Do you want to be right, or do you want to be happy? »), son très bon solo de guitare restera ancré dans les mémoires un bon moment, presque comme un bonbon de nostalgie là encore et c’est pile-poil ce qu’on attendait d’un album de retour de The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. Slipping Through (No Kings) est un morceau un peu plus sombre mais reste dans la continuité de l’album avec un son très caractéristique et des riffs un peu plus heavy…Mais quelque chose manque quand même à ce nouvel album, ce sont les passages screamés et pour l’instant c’est un peu dommage d’avoir raté le coche avec ça! Home Improvement était un des morceaux les plus demandés des Lost Songs du groupe et possède sa version ré-enregistrée dans ce nouvel album, avec sa touche mélancolique et le fait qu’il aborde la douleur et l’ambivalence de l’amour, peu étonnant que ce morceau reste un des préférés des fans.
On continue avec les anciens bangers qui réchauffent les coeurs avec Twenty Hour Drive, là aussi on retrouve une Lost Song et même si la saveur semble être perdue depuis longtemps, elle revient vite à la charge, il faut bien le dire et les anciens morceaux se suivent mais ne se ressemblent pas avec là aussi Kins And Carroll, les paroles reviennent presque d’elles-même. Ces trois derniers morceaux nous renvoient encore à une époque bénie où tout nous semblait presque paisible même si on voulait avoir la mèche et qu’on pleurait nos petits copains/petites copines de l’époque en écoutant des chansons tristes. On pensait les anciens morceaux terminés mais au final on assiste à un dernier jet avec Getting By avant le dernier morceau Worth It en duo avec Craig Mabbit (Escape The Fate), comme sur le premier feat, l’harmonie vocale est parfaite mais au final ce titre aurait plutôt mérité une première place qu’un dernière tant le feat avec Kellin nous semble bien fade à côté.
X’s For Eyes est un bon album surfant sur la vague de la nostalgie mais The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus l’a bien compris : ce genre d’albums ça marche très bien! Mélangeant titres plus anciens en remaster et nouveauté on assiste ici à la résurrection d’un grand groupe qui a bien marqué nos années d’adolescence pour certains d’entre nous.

[ENGLISH VERSION] Seven years after the release of The Awakening, emo band The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus released their sixth studio album on October 3 via Better Noise Music. This new opus contains new tracks as well as a few (old) surprises.
With Always The King, the band plunges us into the old-school sound of the era. Singer Ronnie Winter‘s voice hasn’t changed a bit over the years, and even if the composition seems quite calm, a few passages with a bit of screaming take us back to the good old days… Just like the voice of Kellin Quinn (Sleeping With Sirens) featured here, the voices of the two vocalists harmonize perfectly before a break where the two songs alternate. The introduction is pretty nice, even if in the end we might have expected a little better. Purple Halo seems to return to something more pop-punk, where we find more of the “old” TRJA with slightly silly lyrics that take us back to the Myspace era of “Are You My Dark Angel?” It’s more the kind of song we would have seen as the opener rather than Always The King. Just like Perfection, which is in the same vein, we’re back to songs on Myspace profiles with MSN status lyrics (“This is ripped out of my heart This is language of the heart”), which is exactly the kind of Alt Rock track we like.
The single X’S For Eyes, with its catchy chorus (“Do you want to be right, or do you want to be happy?”) and excellent guitar solo, will remain etched in our memories for a long time, almost like a nostalgic treat, and it’s exactly what we expected from a comeback album by The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. Slipping Through (No Kings) is a slightly darker track but remains in line with the rest of the album with a very distinctive sound and slightly heavier riffs… But something is still missing from this new album, and that’s the screamed passages. For now, it’s a bit of a shame that they missed the boat on that! Home Improvement was one of the most requested tracks from the band’s Lost Songs and has been re-recorded for this new album. With its melancholic touch and the fact that it addresses the pain and ambivalence of love, it’s no surprise that this track remains a fan favorite.
We continue with the old bangers that warm the heart with Twenty Hour Drive, another Lost Song, and even if the flavor seems to have been lost for a long time, it quickly comes back, it must be said, and the old songs follow one another but are not alike, with Kins And Carroll, the lyrics coming back almost by themselves. These last three tracks take us back to a blessed era when everything seemed almost peaceful, even if we wanted to have our hair dyed and we cried over our boyfriends/girlfriends of the time while listening to sad songs. We thought the old songs were over, but in the end we get one last burst with Getting By before the final track, Worth It, a duet with Craig Mabbit (Escape The Fate). As on the first feature, the vocal harmony is perfect, but in the end this track deserves to be first rather than last, as the feature with Kellin seems rather bland in comparison.
X’s For Eyes is a good album riding the wave of nostalgia, but The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus understands that this kind of album works very well! Mixing remastered older tracks with new ones, we are witnessing the resurrection of a great band that left a mark on the teenage years of some of us.
