Rare en France, les américains de Poison The Well étaient de passage à Paris dans le cadre de la tournée anniversaire de leur premier album, The Opposite of December… A Season of Separation (1999). En l’occurrence, leur venue au Backstage By The Mill constituait leur première date en France depuis 2008, autant dire que la soirée se présentait comme un évènement pour les fans du groupe. Pour la dernière date de leur tournée Européenne, Poison The Well était accompagné de bodyweb.
Le groupe anglais arrive sur scène et semble devoir avant tout gérer un problème de son, pourtant, les premières notes de no faith sonnent très bien. Formé en 2021, le groupe comporte des habitués de la scène, avec notamment le guitariste de Higher Power au chant et l’ancien batteur de Pest Control. On sent effectivement le groupe bien à l’aise sur scène et le chant de Louis Hardy met bien en avant le côté sombre de la musique des anglais, même si son chant clair n’est pas aussi juste que sur album. Le groupe vient d’ailleurs nous présenter son dernier EP, deadwired, sorti début septembre, dont les 4 morceaux qui le composent seront interprétés ce soir. Comme souvent avec les groupes de hardcore récents de passage à Paris, bodyweb fait un clin d’oeil à la scène hardcore parisienne, et notamment à Headbussa. Le set se termine après une trentaine de minutes et c’est un peu dommage, avec une seule première partie, on aurait pu espérer un set plus long, d’autant plus que le show proposé par bodyweb était convaincant.
Alors que seront de passage à Parisdans les prochains jours deux mastodontes du metalcore avec Architects et Parkway Drive, ce concert de Poison The Well peut s’apparenter comme une mise en bouche. Non seulement car le style des américains est proche de celui des deux groupes cités, mais surtout car Poison The Well représente un groupe précurseur pour le metalcore plus moderne et qui a explosé au grand public dans les années 2010. Par son ambiance sombre, ses breakdowns, les thématiques de ses chansons et l’incorporation de refrains mélodiques, PTW a ouvert la voie à de nombreux groupes qui se sont inspirés de leur style. L’album le plus représentatif de ces aspects est The Opposite of December (1999) et pour notre plus grand plaisir, le groupe a décidé de mettre à l’honneur cet album pour le 25ème (+1) anniversaire de l’opus.
Tout comme l’album, le set commence avec 12/23/93 et malgré une voix de Jeffrey qui semble moins incisive que sur l’album, le show s’ouvre avec énergie et puissance. Le groupe, qui avait annoncé jouer The Opposite of December en entier, a fait le choix de répartir ces morceaux tout au long du set. On peut presque les repérer à la réaction du public : des morceaux comme Artist’s Rendering of Me ou Slice Paper Wrists provoquent des singalongs et des prises d’assaut de la scène qui donnent une ambiance de vrai show underground intimiste. A ces morceaux issus de l’album de 1999 s’ajoutent un bon nombre de morceaux tiré de l’album You Come Before You (2003) mais également le dernier single du groupe, Trembling Levels, qui annonce l’arrivée d’un nouvel album, le premier depuis 2009. Le show se termine sur le morceau le plus iconique du groupe, Nerdy, l’occasion d’un dernier gros moment de communion avec le public.
Pour célébrer le 25eme anniversaire de son album culte The Opposite of December, Poison The Well était de retour en France après plus de 15 ans d’absence. Dans un Backstage by the Mill complet, le groupe nous a déverse son metalcore avant-gardiste dans une ambiance chaude et intimiste.

Rare in France, the Americans from Poison The Well stopped by Paris as part of the anniversary tour for their first album, The Opposite of December… A Season of Separation (1999). In fact, their appearance at Backstage By The Mill marked their first show in France since 2008, making the evening a real event for the band’s fans. For the last date of their European tour, Poison The Well were joined by bodyweb.
The English band took the stage and seemed at first to be dealing with a sound issue. Still, the opening notes of no faith sounded great. Formed in 2021, the band includes veterans of the scene, with the guitarist of Higher Power on vocals and the former drummer of Pest Control. They looked very comfortable on stage, and Louis Hardy’s vocals highlighted the darker side of the band’s music—even if his clean singing wasn’t quite as accurate as on the record. They were also here to present their latest EP, deadwired, released in early September, with all four of its tracks performed tonight. As is often the case with newer hardcore bands playing in Paris, bodyweb gave a nod to the Paris hardcore scene, in particular to Headbussa. Their set wrapped up after about half an hour, which felt a bit short—since they were the only opener, one could have hoped for a longer performance, especially as bodyweb’s show was convincing.
With metalcore heavyweights Architects and Parkway Drive set to play Paris in the coming days, this Poison The Well concert could almost be seen as an appetizer. Not only because the Americans’ style is close to those two bands, but above all because Poison The Well stand as pioneers of modern metalcore, the wave that broke into the mainstream in the 2010s. Through their dark atmosphere, crushing breakdowns, lyrical themes, and the incorporation of melodic choruses, PTW paved the way for many bands that drew inspiration from their sound. The album that best embodies these elements is The Opposite of December (1999), and to our delight, the band chose to celebrate it for the 25th (+1) anniversary of the record.
Just like on the album, the set kicked off with 12/23/93, and although Jeffrey’s voice didn’t cut quite as sharply as on the recording, the show opened with full energy and power. While the band had announced they would play The Opposite of December in full, they opted to spread the tracks across the entire set. You could almost tell when one came up from the crowd’s reaction: songs like Artist’s Rendering of Me or Slice Paper Wrists sparked singalongs and stage dives, creating the atmosphere of a truly intimate underground show. Alongside the 1999 album tracks came a solid dose from You Come Before You, as well as the band’s latest single Trembling Levels, teasing the arrival of a new album—the first since 2009. The show closed with the band’s most iconic track, Nerdy, offering one last huge moment of communion with the crowd.
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of their cult album The Opposite of December, Poison The Well returned to France after more than 15 years away. In a packed Backstage by the Mill, the band unleashed their forward-thinking metalcore in a warm, intimate atmosphere.
