[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] Le groupe canadien Kittie a sorti aujourd’hui Spit XXV via Sumerian Records, un EP de quatre titres…mais attention pas n’importe lesquels! Quatre titres extraits de leur tout premier album devenu culte Spit sorti le 11 janvier 2000, et cet article va se transformer en article de blog racontant mon histoire d’amour avec ce groupe qui a débuté quelques années après cette sortie.
L’histoire commence grâce à Rock One en 2004, à 14 ans j’écoute le sampler du mois et tombe sur Into The Darkness et c’est LA révélation! Je crois avoir saigné ce morceau une cinquantaine de fois et c’est 1 an plus tard que je tombe sur Spit dans les bacs de mon disquaire et découvre un peu plus le groupe. A l’époque Kittie était un peu une révolution pour moi, je connaissais peu de groupes avec des chanteuses qui criaient et là un groupe 100% féminin mené par le duo des frangines Lander, c’était formidable (bon après Arch Enemy et Angela sont arrivés dans ma vie mais ça on n’en parlera sûrement jamais). Le son de l’album Spit n’est pas super propre à l’époque , mais on sent déjà toute la colère de mon adolescence dans leurs compos autant sur Spit le morceau titre que sur Brackish (morceaux présents sur l’EP XXV).
C’est donc avec la version ré-enregistrée de Spit que débute ce « nouvel » EP des filles, ce qui frappe en premier c’est que la prod est très propre tout en gardant un côté un peu crade mais la rage est intacte, les screams sont mieux maîtrisés qu’à l’époque et après les avoir vues au Hellfest cette année, je ne peut que confirmer le talent de cette formation qui n’a cessée de m’inspirer depuis toutes ces années (Morgan ❤️). La suite c’est avec Do You Think I’m A Whore? Pas le morceau sur lequel j’ai le plus de souvenirs mais il reste un incontournable de leur discographie. Suite et fin avec les bangers que sont Brackish et Charlotte indémodables, Brackish subit de légers changements mais pour le meilleur, la voix claire semble avoir un léger effet qui donne plus de profondeurs et même le refrain change par rapport à l’original, une belle mise en beauté de ce titre qui fait toujours bouger les foules en live ! Charlotte a lui aussi droit à un petit lifting même si le début du morceau ne le laisse pas vraiment présager c’est surtout sur le refrain que la différence est notable mais aussi sur le final où les parties vocales changent par rapport à l’original.
Kittie est une source d’inspiration pour beaucoup de femmes dans le milieu Metal avec une jolie carrière, un retour en grande pompe et ce Spit XXV montre qu’elles en ont encore sous le pied ! La rage est intact , l’amour aussi maintenant, mesdames, on vous attend en Motocultor et en France l’année prochaine !

[ENGLISH VERSION] Canadian band Kittie released Spit XXV today via Sumerian Records, a four-track EP… but not just any four tracks! Four tracks taken from their cult debut album Spit, released on January 11, 2000, and this article is going to turn into a blog post recounting my love affair with this band, which began a few years after the album’s release.
The story begins thanks to Rock One in 2004. At 14, I was listening to the sampler of the month and came across Into The Darkness, and it was THE revelation! I think I played that track about fifty times, and it was a year later that I came across Spit in my record store and discovered a little more about the band. At the time, Kittie was a bit of a revolution for me. I knew few bands with female singers who screamed, and here was a 100% female band led by the Lander sisters. It was amazing (well, after that, Arch Enemy and Angela came into my life, but we’ll never talk about that). The sound of the album Spit wasn’t super clean at the time, but you could already feel all the anger of my adolescence in their compositions, both on the title track Spit and on Brackish (tracks featured on the EP XXV).
So it’s with the re-recorded version of Spit that this « new » EP from the girls begins. The first thing that strikes you is that the production is very clean while retaining a slightly dirty edge, but the rage is intact, the screams are better controlled than at the time, and after seeing them at Hellfest this year, I can only confirm the talent of this band, which has never ceased to inspire me over the years (Morgan ❤️). Next up is Do You Think I’m A Whore? It’s not the track I remember most, but it remains an essential part of their discography. The set ends with the timeless bangers Brackish and Charlotte. Brackish has undergone some slight changes, but for the better. The clear vocals seem to have a slight effect that gives more depth, and even the chorus has changed from the original, beautifully enhancing this track that always gets the crowd moving at live shows! Charlotte also gets a little facelift, even if the beginning of the song doesn’t really give it away. The difference is most noticeable in the chorus, but also in the finale, where the vocals change from the original.
Kittie is a source of inspiration for many women in the metal scene with a successful career and a triumphant comeback, and Spit XXV shows that they still have plenty left in the tank! The rage is intact, and so is the love. Now, ladies, we’ll be waiting for you at Motocultor and in France next year!
