[English version below] C’est en ce samedi 28 juin que la première édition du Skull Valley Fest avait lieu en région parisienne. C’est au Kilowatt à Vitry-sur-Seine et sous une chaleur digne d’une canicule que cette première édition se déroulait. Nous avions grandement hâte de nous y rendre, mon acolyte Estelle (aux photos) et moi ! Voici donc un résumé de notre journée, merci infiniment à l’organisation du Skull Valley de nous y avoir conviées.
Avant de commencer : avez-vous entendu parler de ce petit festival ? Déjà, première de qualité avec des groupes français mais pas que, du côté de la scène metal nous avions droit à du très lourd avec RevNoir, Novelists ou encore Northlane ! Mais ça n’est pas tout, le Skull Valley a fait le pari fou, celui d’allier le Metal et la Bass Music (ou electro) au sein d’un même espace ! Ainsi vous pouviez retrouver des DJ tel que Pythus ou encore Phase One. Si, au premier abord, cela pouvait sembler un peu étrange, nous avons été conquises par ce concept que nous avons toutes les deux trouvé réussi.
Nous avons passé la plupart de notre temps du côté de la scène metal, comme vous pouvez vous en douter, mais nous avons trouvé que la scène drum and bass était elle aussi intéressante puisque les DJ n’hésitaient pas à mixer des morceaux comprenant des passages de groupes que nous aimons, ainsi quand nous sommes passées de « l’autre côté » il était possible de faire la fête sur du Fit for a king ou encore du BMTH remixés !
Côté metal, la scène commençait sa journée avec le passage des autrichiens d’Aenygma. Malgré un problème technique au niveau du son en pleins milieu de son set, le groupe a redoublé d’efforts pour offrir au public, encore peu nombreux, un show de qualité et nous avons passé un excellent moment. Décalant de ce fait les horaires de passages de 15/20 minutes du reste des guests de la journée, le groupe s’est révélé très professionnel et a fini son set sur un wall of death offert par les festivaliers, présents et prêts à en découdre. Il est alors encore assez tôt, l’ambiance promettait d’être incroyable pour le reste de la journée ! À noter que le chanteur de la formation mixait aussi sur l’autre scène avec son autre projet Akov.
Une petite pause s’impose, le temps pour nous de s’hydrater et de se couvrir de crème solaire ! Il est 17h15 quand les francais de Violence prennent place sur scène. Instantanément le public s’amuse et danse en rythme avec le groupe. On comprends totalement la présence de la formation dans la lineup du festival : le groupe propose du metal électro plutôt hardcore ! Et le public adore : ils sont ovationnés à chaque fin de titre et proposent un set terriblement efficace et plus que jamais dans le thème du Skull Valley !
18h30 sonne quand Revnoir commence, nous avons eu le temps d’aller boire et de prendre l’air car il faisait super chaud sous la scène metal qui était couverte ! Heureusement le festival était bien pensé avec des endroits pour s’asseoir, nous avons même trouvé un coin d’ombre, que demander de plus ?
Le groupe français démarre un peu en retard lui aussi et dans une salle centrale bien remplie, on sent l’attente des fans. On assiste cette fois-ci à du metalcore un peu plus classique dans sa forme, avec une voix assez aiguë sur les clairs comme sur les screams. En fond, l’instrumental est truffé de pas mal de petits éléments electro qui donne une ambiance assez lourde, encore une fois le groupe s’inscrit très bien dans cette lineup ! Le mosh s’intensifie dans la fosse dès le début du set des français : gros wall of death bien ouvert sur les derniers titres, le groupe a remercié chaleureusement les festivaliers pour leur énergie !
L’ambiance redescend carrément d’un cran pour le passage de TSS ou The Sunday Sadness. Si nous ne n’accrochons pas aux sonorités emocore de la formation française, des fans du groupe étaient quant à eux quand même bien présents. Il faut aussi dire que l’horaire ne jouait peut être pas en faveur des français puisqu’il est bientôt l’heure de manger ! Dans les premiers rangs c’est malgré tout l’effervescence surtout sur les titres les plus connus tels que Tes pleurs, Killing me ou encore Something in the way sorti plus récemment.
Nous ne connaissions pas les français de Birds in row mais nous avons été très surprises et curieuses pendant leur set. Déjà, le groupe breton qui se définit comme punk hardcore avait énormément de références à des styles très différents de metal et les mélangeait avec d’autres genres musicaux. Si bien qu’au final entre deux titres on se retrouvait avec des atmosphères très différentes. On s’est longuement demandé à quel style la formation se disait appartenir avant d’en déduire que c’était au final très moderne ! Si le tout se voulait moins énervé qu’un RevNoir ou un Violence on passait néanmoins un bon moment en leur compagnie ! Le groupe fini néanmoins à l’heure où devait commencer Novelists. On se retrouve alors partagé : Que faire entre Novelists et Phase One ?! Le dilemme est intenable !
Il est bientôt 22h et nous décidons d’aller à l’autre bout du festival : Phase One embrase la scène electro (joliment appelé La Prairie) ça danse et les gens sont fous ! Dès son arrivée sur scène, l’australien est acclamé par son public. Il joue bien évidemment ses feat avec des groupes de metal tels que Erra ou Polaris, pour notre plus grand plaisir. L’apogée de son set se fait évidemment sur Crash and Burn puisque Marcus de Northlane est présent sur scène pour chanter ses parties du feat ! Phase One lui fait la surprise d’avoir remixé ce titre qui date déjà de 2019, l’occasion presque unique de la voir dans ses conditions là en France ! Nous quittons malheureusement le set de Phase One pour profiter de la moitié de celui de Novelists à l’autre bout du Skull Valley.
Dans le même temps, Novelists, programmé avec retard sur la scène metal, a démarré son set, leur concert était évidemment très attendu et la scène est pleine à craquer : le public est chaud bouillant ! À son habitude la formation propose un set très énergique et emplit d’émotions. On y apprécie le jeu de chacun et la performance de Camille qui est une excellente front-girl. Nous arrivons heureusement pour nos titres préférés ! Big up au son impeccable et à la qualité de la prestation de chacun des membres de Novelists sur scène, leur passage était a la hauteur d’un concert solo !
Il est déjà 23h15 quand Northlane entame son set pour clôturer la journée côté metal et de la meilleure manière pour nous. Les australiens proposent un set dans le thème du festival : metal et bien évidemment très électro (à l’image des derniers albums et Ep de la formation). Dans un set énergique, les australiens embarquent la foule très nombreuse : le public est ravagé, le groupe très content ! On assiste à de gros wall of death sur Talkings Heads ou encore 4D. Marcus, mais aussi Josh (guitariste) remercient tout deux les festivaliers très chaleureusement. Nous avions vu Northlane dix jours auparavant en co-headline avec Whitechapel : nous sommes contentes de constater que la setlist n’était pas tout à fait la même !
C’est ainsi que se clôture la première édition du Skull Valley Festival pour nous. La fête continuait cote Drum and bass jusqu’à deux heures du matin pour les plus déterminés, malheureusement les transports nous forçaient à écourter la soirée !
Nous avons été très surprises par l’organisation générale de l’événement, pour une première on peut dire que la barre a été placée très haute : l’ambiance, les stands divers et variés pour boire et manger, il y avait même un endroit ouvert avec tout le merch des différents groupes présents ce jour là. Nous avons grandement hâte d’avoir des informations quant à une nouvelle affiche pour, éventuellement, l’année prochaine !
[ENGLISH VERSION] The first edition of Skull Valley Fest took place in the Paris region on Saturday, June 28th. It was at the Kilowatt in Vitry-sur-Seine, in sweltering heat. My friend Estelle (pictured) and I were really looking forward to it! Here’s a summary of our day, and a huge thank you to the Skull Valley organizers for inviting us.
Before we begin: have you heard about this little festival? First of all, it was a quality first with French bands, but not only that. On the metal scene, we were treated to some really heavy metal acts like RevNoir, Novelists, and Northlane! But that’s not all; Skull Valley took the crazy gamble of combining metal and Bass Music (or electro) in the same space! You’ll be able to find DJs like Pythus and Phase One. While this might have seemed a little strange at first, we were won over by the concept, which we both found successful.
We spent most of our time on the metal stage, as you might expect, but we found the drum and bass scene to be equally interesting, as the DJs readily mixed tracks featuring tracks from bands we like. When we moved to the « other side, » we could party to remixed Fit for a King or BMTH!
On the metal side, the stage kicked off the day with the Austrians Aenygma. Despite a technical sound issue midway through their set, the band redoubled their efforts to offer the still-small crowd a quality show, and we had a great time. By delaying the set times of the rest of the day’s guests by 15/20 minutes, the band proved highly professional and finished their set on a wall of death provided by the festival-goers, who were present and ready to rock out. It was still quite early, and the atmosphere promised to be incredible for the rest of the day! Note that the band’s singer was also DJing on the other stage with his other project, Akov.
A short break was in order, giving us time to hydrate and cover ourselves with sunscreen! It was 5:15 pm when the French band Violence took the stage. The audience instantly started to enjoy themselves and dance along with the band. It was easy to understand why the band was part of the festival lineup: the band played electro-metal, rather hardcore! And the audience loved it: they received a standing ovation at the end of each song and delivered a terrifically effective set, more in keeping with the Skull Valley theme than ever before!
It’s 6:30 pm when Revnoir starts. We had time to get a drink and some fresh air because it was super hot under the covered metal stage! Fortunately, the festival was well-planned with seating areas; we even found a shady spot—what more could you ask for?
The French band also started a little late, and in a packed central hall, reflecting the fans’ anticipation. This time, we witnessed a slightly more classic metalcore style, with rather high-pitched vocals on both the clean and screaming drums. In the background, the instrumental is peppered with a fair amount of electro, creating a rather heavy atmosphere; once again, the band fits in very well with this lineup! The mosh intensifies in the pit from the start of the French band’s set: a big wall of death, well open for the final tracks, and the band warmly thanked the festival-goers for their energy!
The atmosphere really drops down a notch for the appearance of TSS or The Sunday Sadness. While we weren’t exactly keen on the French band’s emocore sounds, some of the band’s fans were still very present. It must be said that the schedule may not have been in the French band’s favor, as it was almost time to eat! Despite this, the front rows were buzzing, especially with the most well-known tracks such as « Tes pleurs, » « Killing me, » and the more recently released « Something in the Way. »
We weren’t familiar with the French band Birds in Row, but we were very surprised and curious during their set. The Breton band, which defines itself as hardcore punk, had a lot of references to very different styles of metal and mixed them with other musical genres. So much so that, in the end, between two songs, we found ourselves with very different atmospheres. We wondered for a long time what style the band claimed to belong to before concluding that it was ultimately very modern! Even though it was meant to be less edgy than RevNoir or Violence, we still had a good time in their company! The group nevertheless finished at the time when Novelists was supposed to start. We then found ourselves torn: What to do between Novelists and Phase One?! The dilemma is untenable!
It’s almost 10 p.m., and we decide to head to the other end of the festival: Phase One is setting the electro stage ablaze (nicely named La Prairie). It’s dancing, and people are going crazy! As soon as he takes the stage, the Australian is cheered by his audience. He naturally plays his own feats with metal bands such as Erra and Polaris, to our great delight. The climax of his set is obviously Crash and Burn, as Marcus from Northlane is on stage to sing his parts of the feat! Phase One surprises him by remixing this track, which dates back to 2019—a nearly unique opportunity to see him in his own conditions here in France!
We unfortunately leave Phase One‘s set to enjoy half of Novelists‘ set at the other end of Skull Valley. At the same time, Novelists, who were booked late for the metal stage, began their set. Their concert was obviously highly anticipated, and the stage was packed: the crowd was pumped! As usual, the band delivered a very energetic and emotional set. We appreciated everyone’s playing and Camille‘s performance, who was an excellent frontwoman. Luckily, we arrived for our favorite songs! Big up to the impeccable sound and the quality of each member of Novelists‘ performance on stage; their performance was on par with a solo concert!
It was already 11:15 pm when Northlane began their set to close the day’s metal scene in the best possible way for us. The Australians offered a set in keeping with the festival’s theme: metal and, of course, very electro (reflecting the band’s latest albums and EPs). In an energetic set, the Australians brought the large crowd to the stage: the audience was blown away, and the band was very happy! We witnessed a massive wall of death with Talking Heads and 4D again. Marcus, as well as Josh (guitarist), both warmly thanked the festival-goers. We had seen Northlane ten days earlier, co-headlining with Whitechapel: we were happy to see that the setlist wasn’t quite the same!
This concludes the first edition of the Skull Valley Festival for us. The drum and bass party continued until 2:00 a.m. for the most determined, but unfortunately, transportation forced us to cut the evening short!
We were very surprised by the overall organization of the event; for a first, we can say that the bar was set very high: the atmosphere, the diverse and varied stands for food and drink, there was even an open area with all the merch from the different bands present that day. We can’t wait to hear about a new lineup, possibly for next year!
