Après avoir fait la première partie de Bloodywood à Paris en mars dernier, Calva Louise nous présente son dernier album intitulé Edge Of The Abyss, disponible à partir du 11 juillet 2025 par le label Mascot Records.
Pour rentrer complétement dans l’univers du groupe il faut être accroché, tout d’abord avec Tunnel Vision, qui a cet air de faussement mignon et calme, jusqu’à ce que cela nous explose en pleine tête. Avec des couplets aux flows Hip-Hop et un break électro à en couper le souffle, ce premier titre envoie du très lourd et donne plein de promesse pour la suite de cet opus. Même énergie, avec une agressivité qui monte en puissance pour W.T.F qui m’a donné envie de tout casser. Dans la même dynamique avec un côté plus dangereux et grave il y a Hate In Me et et dans un côté plus mélodramatique Under The Skin avec un break piano absolument sensationnel et qui va prendre aux tripes.
Cette fois-ci on part plus du côté influences latines avec Aimless, et ce subtil mélange d’anglais et d’espagnol pendant toute la chanson ainsi que dans le tempo qui peut être frappé dans les mains avec une facilité déconcertante. Dans la même lignée Lo Que Vale qui est complétement en espagnol et je dois avouer que l’espagnol screamé c’est comme une attaque eau sur un Pokemon feu, c’est super efficace. Le petit plus de cette chanson c’est probablement le petit air de guitare pop espagnol dont Juanes n’a rien a envier.
Un virage drastique s’effectue ici avec Impeccable, qui met en avant Metal plus centré sur de l’électro, comme pour s’éloigner de ses origines mais toujours avec énormément d’énergie à revendre. Barely A Response rejoint le virage avec encore une fois une influence différente mais à la fois similaire. Tout comme The Abyss qui donne également une vibe un peu malaisante comme un ovni (un vrai) de la musique qui mériterait sa place dans X-Files, et puis une autre similaire mais en espagnol avec El Umbral ou encore La Corriente qui viennent compléter ce bundle électro.
Calva Louise nous prouve encore une fois que le Metal peux aussi bien faire danser, penser, crier ou tout simplement s’apprécier dans son plus simple appareil. Un album rempli d’influence qui saura resonner au plus profond de votre âme. Il est juste excellent dans son écriture et fou dans son choix de titres, il va d’ailleurs dès sa sortie sur les plateformes rejoindre ma playlist personnelle.

After opening for Bloodywood in Paris last March, Calva Louise presents her latest album, Edge Of The Abyss, available from July 11, 2025, on the Mascot Records label.
To fully immerse yourself in the band’s universe, you have to be hooked, first and foremost by Tunnel Vision, which has a deceptively cute and calm vibe until it explodes in your face. With hip-hop-style verses and a breathtaking electro break, this first track packs a punch and shows great promise for the rest of the album. The same energy, with increasing aggression, can be found in W.T.F., which made me want to smash everything. In the same vein, but with a more dangerous and serious side, is Hate In Me, and on a more melodramatic note, Under The Skin, with an absolutely sensational piano break that will grab you by the gut.
This time, we move more towards Latin influences with Aimless, and its subtle mix of English and Spanish throughout the song, as well as a tempo that can be clapped along to with disconcerting ease. In the same vein, Lo Que Vale is entirely in Spanish, and I must admit that Spanish screamer is like a water attack on a fire Pokemon—it’s super effective. The little extra in this song is probably the little Spanish pop guitar tune that Juanes has nothing to envy.
There’s a drastic shift here with Impeccable, which highlights metal more focused on electro, as if to move away from its origins but still with plenty of energy to spare. Barely A Response joins the shift with yet another different but similar influence. The same goes for The Abyss, which also gives off a slightly unsettling vibe, like a UFO (a real one) of music that deserves its place in The X-Files, and then another similar one but in Spanish with El Umbral or La Corriente, which completes this electro bundle.
Calva Louise proves once again that metal can make you dance, think, scream, or simply enjoy it in its simplest form. An album full of influences that will resonate deep within your soul. It’s just excellent in its writing and crazy in its choice of titles, and as soon as it’s released on the platforms, it will join my personal playlist.
