Le duo alt-pop The Driver Era, composé des frères Ross et Rocky Lynch, annonce son quatrième album studio, Obsession, qui sortira ce vendredi 11 avril chez Kartel Music Group.
Obsession, après Summer Mixtape sortie en 2022, voit le groupe évoluer.
L’album explore les thèmes de l’amour, de la nostalgie et de la perte.
Depuis leur premier single Preacher Man en 2018, ils ont accumulé plus de 400 millions de streams, 58 millions de vues sur YouTube et 28 millions de followers. En plus d’être un musicien dynamique et talentueux, Ross est également un acteur reconnu, qui a joué dans la série Netflix « Chilling Adventures of Sabrina » et le biopic « My Friend Dahmer ». Il a également joué dans le clip vidéo « One Of Your Girls » de Troye Sivan.
Keep Me Up At Night
Dès les premières notes, une chose est sûre : l’envie de danser, de secouer la tête et de sortir son meilleur déhanché est irrésistible. Le rythme disco, avec sa basse percutante, s’empare immédiatement de nous, et le chant nous plonge dans une ambiance summer vibes qui fait un bien fou et met un sourire jusqu’aux oreilles. C’est le sentiment d’un départ pour de grandes vacances d’été, d’être en voiture décapotable, cheveux au vent, à sentir la chaleur du soleil sur la peau, en suivant la route sans se soucier de la destination.
Don’t Walk Away
Suite à cette introduction feel-good, ce titre est, sur le moment, beaucoup plus mélancolique. Une intro toute douce et calme, mais on est vite rassuré dès que la basse revient sur le refrain. L’ambiance estivale est toujours présente, mais le ressenti de ce morceau se rapproche plutôt de celui d’un moment paisible sur la plage, autour du feu, avec les copains, à la tombée de la nuit. Beaucoup plus éthéré, mais il reste néanmoins cette petite touche de dance groove et de good vibes.
Touch
Vous êtes fan de new wave/cold wave des années 80 ? Ce titre est fait pour vous ! On est directement transportés dans ces années-là avec un son électro/goth/dansant génial. Le chant suit la même direction, et en bonus, une basse ultra groovy ! Si vous aimez A-ha, Tears For Fears, Depeche Mode ou encore Kraftwerk, Touch est idéal ! Un titre tout en sensualité, qui porte bien son nom. À recommander pour une nuit chaude et langoureuse en compagnie de votre crush d’été (si vous voyez ce que je veux dire…). Comme le chant nous le répète en fin de morceau « There’s no time to waste ».
Same Old Story
La sensation vacances d’été fait son grand retour sur Same Old Story. Des nappes de clavier éthérées, un chant aux notes dansantes qui nous donne envie de chantonner la rythmique avec ses « aaah ah ah », la summer vibe est toujours présente. Un titre qui évoque une fin d’après-midi à lézarder tranquilou près de la piscine, avec les rayons de soleil qui nous chauffent la peau.
The Weekend
Comme son nom l’indique, ce titre incarne à la perfection l’esprit du week-end ! Préparez-vous à danser et à vous amuser jusqu’aux premières lueurs de l’aube. On se retrouve transporté dans une maison de vacances, avec la plage à perte de vue et tous nos amis prêts à faire la fête jusqu’au bout de la nuit. La basse, toujours aussi groovy, nous fait remuer les hanches, et un chant féminin s’ajoute à notre plus grand plaisir, ce qui donne un duo vocal ultra efficace.
Nothing Left To Lose
Nothing Left To Lose est d’emblée plus jazzy, et son instrumental marque un contraste avec le début de l’album, qui été plus centré sur le feeling. Ici, on assiste à une véritable démonstration de ce que les frères Lynch sont capables : guitare, piano, clavier… Plusieurs passages permettent d’apprécier pleinement leur maîtrise multi-instrumentiste. La voix, elle aussi, montre qu’elle peut aller plus loin, avec des ajouts qui enrichissent le catalogue du chant. La fin du morceau est accompagnée d’un solo de clavier qui termine le titre façon rétro-électro 80s.
Don’t Take The Night
Après une courte intro aérienne, c’est reparti pour danser jusqu’au bout de la nuit sur le dancefloor. En partie grâce à la basse et son éternelle groove disco ultime, mais aussi grâce à la guitare qui nous fait cadeau d’un riff ultra dansant, nous guidant tout au long du morceau. On tape du pied et des mains, avec des passages au piano et des applaudissements qui retentissent tout au long du titre. Qui, sans nul doute, feront leurs effet en live. Si vous aimez Bruno Mars, Don’t Take The Night en rappelle l’énergie.
I’d Rather Die
Ce qui saute aux oreilles sur I’d Rather Die, c’est le son jazzy R’n’B qui tranche avec ce que nous avons écouté jusque-là. Sur le refrain, il y a des accents de The Kinks (She’s Evil). La basse entêtante, en arrière-plan, nous donne le tempo, agrémentée d’une touche de piano. À nouveau, on remarque la versatilité du chant, qui s’inscrit ici dans la mouvance R’n’B. Cela peut nous faire penser à Alicia Keys, ou encore Frank Ocean.
Believe She Got Away
Avec ses nappes de clavier, ce titre nous plonge dans une atmosphère envoûtante. La basse claque, et le refrain, quant à lui, est très efficace. Ça donne tout de suite envie de danser et de chanter avec la répétition des « ah-ah » en harmonie féminine. Une ambiance aussi captivante qu’entraînante. On peut aussi penser à Muse (Panic Station) pour l’aspect claquant et dansant de la basse.
Everybody’s Lover
La mélancolie revient nous voir. Everybody’s Lover nous donne la sensation de se promener en solitaire à la tombée de la nuit dans les rues, éclairées par la lumière douce des lampadaires. Perdu dans nos pensées, à la recherche d’un amour perdu, ou d’un amour de vacances qu’on ne reverra plus jamais. Balade tranquille et mélancolique. Un solo de guitare ultra cool termine le titre sur une touche plus heavy.
Better
C’est la fin des vacances d’été, et on reprend la route à bord de notre décapotable, mais cette fois sans les copains. Le soleil se lève, la plage est désormais vide, et une douce mélancolie envahit l’esprit avec des souvenirs pleins la tête. Le voyage est ponctué de toutes les anecdotes vécues pendant cet été. Des petits passages « rapés » se glissent dans le morceau, accompagnés de parties claviers aux sonorités très rétro. Une fin douce-amère qui conclut parfaitement l’album.
Conclusion
Obsession, c’est la promesse de beaux jours, de la chaleur de l’été, de soirées improvisées autour d’un feu au bord de l’océan sur le sable fin. Des vacances où la fête s’entremêle avec les amours, les ruptures, les regrets et le pardon. Une ambiance feel-good qui nous rassemblera, entre amis. Pour faire des nuits blanches à boire, écouter de la musique, danser et s’éclater jusqu’au petit matin. La chaleur du soleil nous amènera à nous prélasser au bord de la piscine, après cette soirée de folie. Puis, on finit les vacances avec cette mélancolie des bons moments passés. On prend la route du retour, à bord de notre voiture décapotable, où l’on sent déjà les premières douceurs de l’automne. On repense aux rires, aux larmes, aux amours, à la fête, à la musique… et on se dit : « Vivement l’été prochain.»

Alt-pop duo The Driver Era, made up of brothers Ross and Rocky Lynch, announce their fourth studio album, Obsession, to be released this Friday, April 11 by Kartel Music Group.
Obsession, following Summer Mixtape released in 2022, sees the band evolve.

Keep Me Up At Night
From the very first notes, one thing is certain: the urge to dance, shake your head and pull out your best hips is irresistible. The disco rhythm, with its percussive bass, takes hold of us immediately, and the vocals plunge us into a summer vibe that feels great and puts a smile on your face. It’s the feeling of setting off on a summer vacation, of being in a convertible car, hair blowing in the wind, feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin, following the road without worrying about the destination.
Don’t Walk Away
Following this feel-good introduction, this track is, for the moment, much more melancholy. A soft, calm intro, but we’re quickly reassured when the bass returns on the chorus. The summer mood is still present, but the feel of this track is more like that of a peaceful moment on the beach, around the fire, with friends, as night falls. Much more ethereal, but still with a touch of dance groove and good vibes.
Touch
Are you a fan of 80s new wave/cold wave? Then this is the track for you! You’re transported straight back to those days, with a brilliant electro/goth/dance sound. The vocals follow in the same direction, and as a bonus, an ultra groovy bass! If you like A-ha, Tears For Fears, Depeche Mode or even Kraftwerk, Touch is ideal! A sensual track that lives up to its name. Recommended for a hot, languorous night with your summer crush (if you know what I mean…). As the song repeats at the end, “There’s no time to waste”.
Same Old Story
The summer vacation feel is back on Same Old Story. With ethereal keyboard layers and danceable vocals that make us want to sing along to the rhythmic “aaah ah ah”, the summer vibe is ever-present. A track that evokes a late afternoon lounging peacefully by the pool, with the sun’s rays warming our skin.
The Weekend
As its name suggests, this track perfectly embodies the spirit of the weekend! Get ready to dance and have fun until dawn. We find ourselves transported to a vacation home, with the beach as far as the eye can see and all our friends ready to party into the night. The bass, as groovy as ever, gets our hips moving, and a female vocal is added to our delight, making for an ultra-effective vocal duet.
Nothing Left To Lose
Nothing Left To Lose is immediately more jazzy, and its instrumental contrasts with the album’s more instinct opening. Here, we witness a true demonstration of what the Lynch brothers are capable of: guitar, piano, keyboard… Several passages allow us to fully appreciate their multi-instrumentalist mastery. The vocals, too, show that they can go further, with additions that enrich the vocal catalog. The track ends with a keyboard solo that brings the 80s retro-electro sound to a close.
Don’t Take The Night
After a short, airy intro, it’s back to dancing the night away on the dancefloor. Thanks in part to the bass and its eternal ultimate disco groove, but also to the guitar, which gives us the gift of an ultra-danceable riff, guiding us throughout the track. Foot-stomping and hand-clapping, with piano passages and applause ringing out throughout. All of which will undoubtedly have an effect live on stage. If you’re a Bruno Mars fan, Don’t Take The Night recalls this energy.
I’d Rather Die
What jumps out at you on I’d Rather Die is the jazzy R’n’B sound, in stark contrast to what we’ve heard so far. On the chorus, there are hints of The Kinks (She’s Evil). The heady bass in the background sets the tempo, enhanced by a touch of piano. Once again, we notice the versatility of the vocals, here in the R’n’B vein. It may remind us of Alicia Keys, or Frank Ocean.
Believe She Got Away
With its keyboard layers, this track plunges us into a spellbinding atmosphere. The bass kicks in, and the chorus is highly effective, making you want to dance and sing along with the repetition of “ah-ahs” in feminine harmony. An atmosphere as captivating as it is catchy. Muse (Panic Station) also comes to mind for the slamming, danceable bass.
Everybody’s Lover
Melancholy returns. Everybody’s Lover gives us the sensation of strolling alone at dusk through the streets, lit by the soft light of streetlamps. Lost in our thoughts, searching for a lost love, or a vacation sweetheart we’ll never see again. A quiet, melancholy stroll. An ultra-cool guitar solo ends the track on a heavier note.
Better
It’s the end of summer vacation, and we’re back on the road in our convertible, but this time without our buddies. The sun rises, the beach is now empty, and a gentle melancholy invades the mind, with memories filling the head. The journey is punctuated by all the anecdotes of the summer. Little “rap” passages creep into the track, accompanied by retro-sounding keyboard parts. A bittersweet ending that perfectly concludes the album.
Conclusion
Obsession is the promise of fine days, the heat of summer, improvised evenings around a fire by the ocean on fine sand. A vacation where festivities intermingle with love, break-ups, regrets and forgiveness. A feel-good atmosphere that will see us gather with friends to pull all-nighters, drinking, listening to music, dancing and having a blast until the wee hours, when the warmth of the sun will take us lounging by the pool after that crazy evening. And then the vacation comes to an end, with the melancholy of good times gone by. We take the road back, in our convertible car, where we can already feel the first hints of autumn. We think back to the laughter, the tears, the love, the parties, the music… and we say to ourselves: can’t wait for next summer.
